Some manufacturers are just funny that way. Bill Ruger is on record saying no honest person needs more than 10 rounds.

Gun lovers (and I'm one of them) really need to give the Ruger hate a rest. The man's been dead for what, 9 years? It just helps underline the zealot mentality the gun-control crowd likes to paint gun-enthusiasts as having. The rancor some hold for him is just amazing, you'd think he funneled arms to Iran or something.

Bill is gone and Ruger the company has changed with the times and moved on. Gun aficionados should do the same.

More on topic though, I'm curious - what's your choice for plating? Tripp Research? Robar?

I recently picked up a 9MM Sig, for home defense.
What is the best type of ammo for this purpose? (currently using hollow point)
My concern is if I ever have to use it, how many walls will that round go through?

Don't need a gunsmith to answer that.

I feel the best kind of ammo for that wouldn't measure 9mm. 😉 If I were you I'd look for 90 and 115 grains loads from Corbon or Hornady. 148grain 9mm loads are garbage and will only give you problems.
Your second question is impossible to answer as it relies on too many unknowns - velocity of round, type of projectile, angle of impact, material of wall, thickness of wall, distance to impact, etc etc.

Get a folding stock equipped pump 20 gauge, loaded with #4 shot, maybe put a light on it. Keep that 9 for backup.

my $0.02 anyway...

Do you ever get funny looks or alarmed expressions from people when they find out you work with firearms / posses many firearms and are not in law enforcement/military? More generally, how do you deal with the stigma that accompanies firearms in today's society? Not sure what it's like where you live, but here most people tend to keep such non-PC (for this area) hobbies very quiet even though they are completely above board.

It's been a year or so since I did one of these, so it's about time I did it again.

Rules of engagement:

DO - Ask me anything you want, if it's illegal I'll say it is and I won't expand upon it other than what section of the prison it will get you in.

DO NOT - Discuss virtues of counterstrike/call of duty/etc. I deal with real people and real problems.

DO - Be nice to everyone asking questions in this thread. There are no stupid questions here.

DO NOT - Belittle anyone elses question.

Street cred: NRA certified instructor, gun nut since I turned 18, manufacturer and retailer of firearms, machineguns and silencers. I'm also a certified Glock and Sig Sauer Armorer.

Ask away!

why is the compact M&P9c in such short supply?!
yet the full size M&p9 is plentiful?

I'm not sure I understand your question. Please elaborate.

Many dealers are increasing their FFL transfer fees in order to (seemingly) drive their customers to buy from them instead of online.

It seems to me if they just charged a $20 flat fee they would undercut most other gun shops and just make money all day for having people fill out forms and receiving boxes.

Am I missing something? And yes, I understand a gun sale has a higher profit margin but it's hard to compete with a giant warehouse with no overhead costs.

Ok, I know what you mean now. Yes, this is an increasing trend. It is basically a protectionist tariff. If they can't compete on the price, they know there is enough regulation that they can raise the price of the transfer fee to offset any consumer savings.

They do this because most retail businesses are high overhead. They need that 10-35% margin on $10,000 in sales a week to keep the doors open. When other retailers work for fractions of that margin and instead of making $300, they make $30 - something is going to give. A $20 flat fee transfer would cannibalize their own business and they would not be able to stay open.

What model?

Sig makes a nice gun, it is efficiently german.

Any name brand hollowpoint is likely to work well. An easy way to check without shooting someone is to find out what product your local PD carries. Caution: 9/10 cops will say "we carry the LE only stuff that you can't buy" because they really don't know and want you to go away.

Federal Hydrashok, HST, CCI Gold Dots, Remington Golden Saber, Winchester Ranger SXT (SXT, not the generic JHP) - are all excellent.

If you are concerned about the projectile punching through walls - sell the Sig 9mm and use the money to buy an AR15. (I'm completely serious since my statement sounds counter intuitive.)

Thank you!

You are welcome.

What do you like better than Kimber?

I'm a big fan of Rock River but they don't make 1911's anymore.

Sig has gotten REALLY competitive on 1911's. Their prices are lower than kimber and the gun is built just as well if not better in my view.

Springfield Armory makes a nice gun if you can find one though. They are notorious for production backlog.

I'd take either of those over a Kimber any day.

do people call you breastinspector at work and can they keep a straight face doing it?

They call me a lot worse with a straight face.

What is the status with Steyer and the AUG A3 now that Sabre Defence, the contractor that was making the receiver and other parts, has been sold off...?

I don't HATE Bill Ruger, I was just proving a point. Asking gun owners to stop being in an age old mentality is.....well the word I'll use is "humorous" at best.

Depends on the gun. Tripp and Robar have been around for a while and they do quality work however there was a thing up with the Robar NP3 electroless nickel a while ago. I'm liking the EXO Fail Zero coatings if I had to do the two tone thing - but again it depends on the gun. Heirloom does some nice finishes as does Birdsong, et al but you have to look at the job at hand and then figure out who should get the work and not the other way around.

I had a girl walk out of a date because I own a gun.

You just try to break the stigma. I'm overweight but I'm not driving a pickup truck shooting at everything that moves.

S&W is world renowned for their backlogs. They will run 500 guns and they will all sell out in days and they will run 100 of another model that will sit on distributor shelves for months.

That having been said, I just had an M&P 9c walk in today on a trade. If you can live with a used gun let me know.

AFAIK S&W just got a big contract - the Belgian police or someone are switching to the M&P 9mm. I think I read supply was supposed to be normal again around October.

I haven't heard that but I think it sounds suspicious because for FN not to get the job would be an interesting case.

It would be like Boeing losing to Airbus on an order from American Airlines.
