Question one: Assuming the owner is willing to take time to train and practice, what is the best style of gun for home defense?

Question two: What is a good rifle for plinking if one wants to use non-lead (steel or other non-hazardous) ammo? For the same use, which rifle has the lowest maintenance requirements?

1. Shotgun, hands down. Ammo selection matters considerably however. Followed by AR-15 with 55gr hollow points or other less-penetrating options. Worries about over-penetration may be much less if you live in a home on a large lot as opposed to living in an apartment.

2. Not sure why you care about using "green" ammunition. Just buy a Marlin 795 or Ruger 10/22 for some 22LR fun and buy copper-plated RN or HP ammo. Marlin 795 or other 22LR is about as low maintenance as you can get. Periodic cleaning and oiling is all it needs.

if I wanted a gun to take camping and plink cans, what's the least expensive option? If wanted to take a gun for small animal hunting (on foot, we don't need no stinking ATVs or cars where I go), what's my best option?

Marlin 795. As cheap as $90 after rebate. 22LR which is about $18 a brick of 550 rounds. Will still stop a squirrel or other small critter.

Why are PTR-91 / H&K-91 magazines so cheap, sometimes selling for $5 or less each; but FN/FAL mags are in the in the $20 price range.

Since the FN has been used by so many militaries all over the world, why are FN mags so expensive? Why cant we just import them from some third world country to get the price down.

Same reason why you don't use non-milsurp mags in Tokarevs. They're not same as factory spec and you will get all sorts of feeding problems. Mags are disposable so if you find a non OEM mag that works for you have fun, but don't trust your life on it.

"Silencers" isn't generally a term used by people in the industry I thought?

Suppressor would be the better term. Unless it's an integral suppressor, they don't make the firearm anywhere near "silent"

What the most reliable (function/accuracy) AK47?
I see Russian/Polish/Czech...
What/why is WASR?

There is wide variation even within a particular country of origin. The most consistently highly-regarded rifles tend to be Russian-made Arsenal (Saiga), VEPR, etc.

A WASR is a Romanian AK pattern rifle made by Cugir in Romania. They are generally regarded as bottom tier (at least if assembled by Century Arms) but are generally sufficient for blasting targets at the range. Quality on average is not as good as a Saiga, VEPR, etc.

Do you ever get funny looks or alarmed expressions from people when they find out you work with firearms / posses many firearms and are not in law enforcement/military? More generally, how do you deal with the stigma that accompanies firearms in today's society? Not sure what it's like where you live, but here most people tend to keep such non-PC (for this area) hobbies very quiet even though they are completely above board.

Join AR15.com or another similar board where you can find other people who share your hobby. And occasionally take a non-shooter with you to the range to convert them. 🙂

How long til we have polycarb slides?
Also, how practical would caseless ammo be in a pistol?

I doubt that polycarbonate will ever make it to be slide material. Although strong, it is brittle. Same reason why you don't see much use of titanium in firearms.

I doubt caseless ammo will ever make it commerically.

I like m4carbine.net better than arfcom

I've heard that m4carbine.net is mostly people (or geared towards people) in the military and LE. If you're just the average guy plinking at the range, then probably not that great.

Even most people on ar15.com are very snobbish brand whores, from my experience.

I'm sure you can find good info on either site, just be warned ahead of time.

PAFOA.com has a more friendly group of people, but its mostly geared to PA laws, locations, etc.

Depends on the firearm, and the suppressor. A Ruger 10/22 with an integrated suppressor pretty much all you here is the action of the bolt.

What about hearing protection? I went shooting a couple times and used the standard muffs they offer at the indoor range. First two times were no problem but the third time the glasses kept the muffs from getting a good seal and after 100 rounds my ears were ringing, and I was pretty pissed.

I watch videos of people outdoors with just earplugs of some sort, but indoors I'm thinking you need both earplugs and earmuffs. Any recommendations? So far shooting is fun but it's not really worth my hearing.

I've got those and I like them. No problems with getting a good seal with glasses for me at least. I wear earplugs under them, at the range I go to it's technically outside but it's covered on 3 sides so it's still pretty loud.
