There is nothing wrong with dumpster diving, in fact I think it's wonderful and far less wasteful that things like computers get recycled instead of just hauled off to the dump.

If you find something, so much the better, but the real reward is the experience and the stories you and your friends get to tell later. Asking why a dumpster diver dives is like asking those ship hunters why they look for their treasures. Don't they know that the fish sh!t in the water and it all falls down onto the wrecked ships? Why do archeaologists look for their relics? Don't they know they can get dirty doing that? How can they live with themselves knowing they didn't earn wages and buy the things they find? And what if they soil their trousers, or (gasp!) touch water that a fish has sh!t in, and don't find anything at all? How in the world can these crazy people look at themselves in the mirror?

But what do I know?

Hey, that's a pretty good analogy....

but I think dumpster divers are more like Indiana Jones, not a true archeaologist, but a treasure hunter. (I'm quoting my archeaologist teacher)

Right. Digging up lost, historical artifacts is the same thing as grabbing a video card someone threw away.

anyways, you can also ask yourself, do you really need things that badly that you have to work as much as you do? do you really need a tv? do you really need some music?
I don't work for my *things*, though. I do work to make money, but my main focus is to eat and have shelter. Anything else I get from the money I make is a bonus. I also do work that I really enjoy and not just for the money. I wouldn't dig through someone's turd if they swallowed a diamond. :)

I always thought dumpster diving would be fun. At the end of the school year one of my dad's friends and his son would go dumpster diving at the university near here and see what the students threw away. He says they found all kinds of cool stuff, even a mini-fridge once.

I don't see the big deal, if he wants to do it don't bother him about it. I'd do it if I would find some cool stuff :p

A friend?s retarded uncle was given a $500 ticket when he was caught dumpster diving. This was in some small town in Louisiana.

You think that we are calling you a jerk because you disagreed with him? I would never think about jumping into a dumpster, unless my life somehow depended on it. Do you not understand that telling people to "get an effing life" is jerklike behavior? It's not that hard to understand man.

*back to lurk mode...ruining my post count :(

I think I read in another thread that his rectum has become fused shut which probably accounts for some of it too. Take it easy on him.

Baffled2 is absolutely right. Reusing things instead of sending them to the landfill is one of the best ways to take part in conservation.

Therefore you should be very proud and not ashamed after a successful dumpster diving expedition.

We're going to be going to blockbuster video, and some local computer shops for stuff. Got any other places to try out? We're open for ideas.

Some basic stuff we know about:

Wear gloves and old clothes (long sleeve shirt and pants)
Bring a flashlight
Don't get any food (doesn't matter since we won't be going to any places that sell food)
Be careful, since their could be sharp objects, glass and such.

Any other tips? Thanks for any help!

what are you... 10?

I never meant to say that the result is the same, but possibly the appeal and even the motivation might be similar. You don't get it anyway, so why am I wasting my time?:p The substance of my post could be summed up by the line, "It's not the find, it's the search, and the excitment of the search wherein lies the appeal."

Might be good to ask first. I asked at a local computer shop and they were fine with it. Other advice is to watch out for bee nests - they seem to love to nest in or around dumpsters, as they can provide a steady source of food and shelter.

And hey, sometimes some damn good stuff is in the trash. Someone already found two complete barebones systems in the trash - working ones! Some stuff had been taken out, but the remaining parts were still intact and working. I also got a bunch of nice cables and hardware from a temp job at a computer place - they were throwing out screws that they didn't feel like cleaning up, or power cables they didn't need. I asked first; about the trash the manager said: "help yourself." :)

When I was younger I did some dumpster diving, mostly print shops (posters) and stationary. I prefer to think of it as recycling. :)

Why don't one of you go dumpster diving over at TomsHardware. You might find a 3.3GHz processor. Try not to create any sparks though, I hear he is partial to vodka martinis.

wear thick, thick gloves with that metal lining to prevent syringes from puncturing your skin.

If you don't like someone, ignore them. There are a few people here that I just laugh at, then ignore. Most people post useful things at some point. There's only one person here who I've seen post aboslutely nothing of value.

That said, to each his own. If you want to go dumpster diving, who am I to say it's wrong?

Why don't you just apply for a job at the computer store at night? Seems you could watch the trash legally that way.?:)
