Whether or not it's illegal, I have to agree with one part of FFM's post. (And it pains me to admit it.)

Who the hell wants to go dumpster diving? Would you go over to your friends house and start going through their trash to see if they threw out something you want?

no, because my friend is a consumer, just like me. the thing about dumpster diving is that you can get cool stuff you otherwise couldn't (even if you could afford it). for example, many years ago, you could get whole sheets of baseball cards at the card factories. i think that's pretty cool, if you're into baseball cards.

Does said friend throw away full systems, and other pieces of hardware?

I've never done it, but it's not like he's going through a grocery store's dumpster. Having worked at a computer shop when I was 16, I threw away (not really ;)) a lot of decent equipment. I believe that's what he's going for...

Yeah, and take pride in a collection that you didn't actually work to collect but stole from someone's trash bin. Hey, those cards will be worth something some day if you can get the mustard stains off and your pride back up to par!

I've never been, that said, here are what I feel may be applicable words of advice.

Be careful when you jump in you don't land on something that injures you.

Wear old dark clothes. Tonight would not be a night for your day glow orange shirt.

If you're going to use a flashlight be careful with it and keep the light under the edge of the dumpster. I'd thinka flashlight shining all around inside would draw suspicion.

One of you stay outside on look out.

Have a prepared story like you were just looking for boxes to help your friend move or something. If you get stopped by the police and run or something you've just admitted you know you were doing something wrong, so make it seem legit and harmless.

Ummm...shower well afterwards too :)

I found a couple of cases of Sodimms, SCSI Cards and NIC's one time when I searched the Dumpster of a Laptop Repair shop in Mt View on one occasion. I actually was just getting boxes to move.

When I worked at a Computer Renaissance franchise, we used to throw a bunch of stuff out, but nothing much anyone could use. We stripped out anything that was halfway useful before chucking the rest in the dumpster.
. Most jurisdictions have passed ordinances that once something has been discarded and put out by the curb, it is fair game--so that investigators can gather evidence. Since dumpsters are "by the curb" wherever they happen to be, the same rule applies. Nonetheless, I would recommend checking your local ordinances and to have spotters with radio units just to avoid any possible hassle.

Maybe it's me and I have too much respect for myself and don't require material things THAT badly to where I go through someone else's trash in order to get it. :)

That and what happens when you're in the dumpster, smelling like sh!t, and end up not finding a damn thing. :p

well, yes. not everybody has pride that is as easily damaged as yours, and not everybody has pride that is derived from having to work for everything they get.

What makes you think you have the right to judge someone as "cheap and no dignity" just because the person wants to have a little fun? You'd better watch yourself if you believe in a god - he might be trying to throw lightning bolts at you now.

I had a friend who worked on the cleaning crew at the HP printer plant here in Vancouver, WA before it shut down....He always came home with lots of test printers that worked perfect - Snagged right out of a dumpster. They eventually started crushing the printers.

Since I don't believe in a god like that, I have nothing to worry about. :) I just think it's disgusting that someone would lower themselves to that level on purpose. It's one thing if you're homeless and nobody will hire you because you don't look just right (which is a load of crap, btw) and you're forced to look for things simply to live, but it's a whole nother story to cheapen yourself.

it's not a matter of requiring material things... it's just that it's cool to see what you can find. well, i mean i'm sure some people do it to find food or something, but i don't think that is this guy's case.

while we're on the topic, i saw a tv special about some homeless kids in seattle once... they had this pretty cool trick where they would call up a pizza shop, order a pizza, never come into pick it up. apparently the shop would then throw the pizza away, and *poof* free pizza :p i dunno, i would never do that (i mean, what if the pizza fell out or something) but i thought it was ingenius :)

Dood....shut up. Who cares if he wants to do it? You're not sleeping with him, so it's not like you're the one going to smell in the morning. Besides, with the feces spewing from your mouth now, what have you got to worry about if you were.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. Deal.
