it's not a matter of requiring material things... it's just that it's cool to see what you can find.
Unless you get some kind of spiritual fulfillment from dumpster diving, are the things you acquire from the actual dumpster NOT material things? And since you probably don't get anything spiritual out of dumpster diving, isn't the only reason to do thi is to retrieve these material things?

So, basically...

You're sifting through someone else's trash in order to get more material possesions. I can't imagine needing material things that badly in order to do this.

Dood....shut up. Who cares if he wants to do it? You're not sleeping with him, so it's not like you're the one going to smell in the morning. Besides, with the feces spewing from your mouth now, what have you got to worry about if you were.

One man's trash is another half-man's treasure. Deal.

That's more like it.

I find it sad that you don't find self-worth with the little gems of life.

nik

the "little gems of life" being "only obtaining material goods by performing an act that earns me a prize, which i can then use to obtain material goods"?

dumpster diving is not so much about the stuff you get, it's the act of getting it home.

i recently spied a HUGE server case thrown away down an alley, went back that night, blagged it, got it home but sadly it needed too much work.
this experience was very fun and quite addictive, sneaking around in all your ninja gear with your m8s, nothing can beat it.

and as for everyone and thier "u dirty ho" attitude, it's not like he's gonna go through slurry looking for old half eaten burgers.
i have seen skips/bins outside companies lots of times, all very clean as it's only equipment/scrap paper/crisp packets but i was too scared to dive in and get it.
If i had i might have come away with some very nice stuff.

and anyway, some people can't afford to save, i know i can't, i barely have enough coming in to pay the bills/rent/food/ect soa good quality find is worth it's weight in gold.

PS. check out here for more divin info

no, i guess i didn't word it properly. you don't *need* these things. when you buy a large screen tv, do you really *need* it? no, it's just cool to have.

i took a shower, and started thinking about this thread.

why is dumpster diving, whether or not you *need* to, looked down upon? i don't want to hear "because i have pride" or some nonsense like that, i want to know exactly what it is about dumpster diving that is so bad. is it the fact that you are dealing with garbage?

pride and possible legality issues. that's it, IMO.

csyberblue,

I love dumpster diving. Be careful that you have your friend stand outside the damn thing, so if you get stuck, he can at least call for help. Most of them are smooth inside with no footholds,so make sure you can get out after diving in.Maybe you can bring a milk crate just to play it safe. Wear heavy duty gloves and be careful about just diving in. I recently came across a mini 2" color tv that a Super Target just tossed in the trash, brand new, still in the box. Try those Super Targets: a lot of them just toss discontinued items in a dumpster out back. You can find some nice deals there. But beware: you can also wind up with a dumpster full of busted up pallets with nails sticking out of them. Careful where you leap!

Other than that, try to stay away from medical center dumpsters: I hear that they are not too much fun.I'm sure you can find all sorts of interesting stuff at industrial parks where companies have small manufactuiring facilities and toss away all kinds of neat stuff.Keep us posted as to what you find.

Peace

i agree it's silly. when i was really young and we were poorer, my grandfather came home with a lazyboy type seat that he found someone throwing away. he's a Korean immigrant who grew up very poor in the country side. he was shocked that American people were so wasteful, and brought it home. he put it in the basement and watched TV on it everyday.

of course, as a kid, i was embarassed.....my grandfather was very proud of it. in retrospect, it was silly of me to be so embarassed.

Actually, I wouldn't. Mainly because I don't *need* to have it badly enough to go through someone's trash to get it and also because no one in their right mind would throw something like that out. :p

Bahahahaha! Man I thought you were talking about just behind your house. I do that all the time, but behind businesses? LOL. I don't see anything wrong with it. Go for it! Let us know what kind of finds you get.

It's the fact of lowering yourself to the point of jumping into a business' dumpster in order to *maybe* find something worth keeping.

Why is it that you don't panhandle, gopunk?

because i have better things to do with my time... things that earn me more money, and things that look better on a resume.

nearly all of us lower ourselves to the point where we do the bidding of others just to earn a buck. i don't see anybody complaining about that...

btw, do you people have a problem with pet food companies? they just use the waste from other companies...

i recall reading in one of those dumpster diving threads at f@twallet, that some office supply stores would rather throw away perfectly good office furniture than see it below cost. they would tell the manufacturer it was defective or damaged, and just get credit from them.

not sure it that's true, but that's what i read....

:Q Then you're BLIND! :Q Everybody complains about their job sometime. Everybody complains about something at some point. And, in our society that's bent on money and money only to get people through life, it's a damn good bet that what they're complaining about is making someone somewhere a buck.
