why is dumpster diving, whether or not you *need* to, looked down upon? i don't want to hear "because i have pride" or some nonsense like that, i want to know exactly what it is about dumpster diving that is so bad. is it the fact that you are dealing with garbage?
It's the fact of lowering yourself to the point of jumping into a business' dumpster in order to *maybe* find something worth keeping.

Why is it that you don't panhandle, gopunk?

because i have better things to do with my time... things that earn me more money, and things that look better on a resume.

nearly all of us lower ourselves to the point where we do the bidding of others just to earn a buck. i don't see anybody complaining about that...

:Q Then you're BLIND! :Q Everybody complains about their job sometime. Everybody complains about something at some point. And, in our society that's bent on money and money only to get people through life, it's a damn good bet that what they're complaining about is making someone somewhere a buck.

nik

no, i didn't mean that kind of complain. i mean the kind of complaining you do... the high horse complaining.

it wasn't that long ago when upper class people looked down on "hired help" like you look down on people who go dumpster diving.

And so do I...much better things than dumpster diving. Which is really why I can't understand why anyone would do it. Who's life is so boring that they actually take time out of their day to go through someone's garbage?

ok ok, let me ask this nice an slow...

w h a t i s w r o n g w i t h d u m p s t e r d i v i n g ?

it's legal (here at least) and don't go with the old "my pride" crap
Don't be an ass. It doesn't make for good conversation.

Anyway, I guess there's nothing wrong with the actual act. If you want to do it, go for it. I just can't understand who has time for that kind of crap.

ah, but i didn't say anything about dumpster diving :p

first off, you can find stuff that you can't buy or otherwise get. this alone might make it worth my time.
secondly, you might find something of value, that would also make it worth your time.

neither of these things would happen with panhandling, as i doubt you'll ever get more than money, and you probably won't get 11 bucks an hour or something.

Again, I have to use the argument that do you really need something that badly that you have to take time out of your day to jump into someone's dumpster and go through the crap they didn't want? I understand you can *maybe* find cool stuff in there, but for me, it's just not worth it.

Then again, I'm a lazy fvck. :D :p

Compare me to whoever you wish. It doesn't make dumpster diving any better.

No, ya don't need any of that. But it's nice to sit back and relax and see the "fruit of your labor" :p

at the stereo advantage in Buffalo, NY, you can find some good stuff in the dumpster...I've never done it, but my friend picked up some great speakers for his surround sound system...had some scratches on it, but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little paint...i think he's gotten some other good stuff there...all requires a little work...nothing major...

I probably live in the mecca of dumpster diving. Near where I live is the City of Industry, where all the computer OEM's are located.

ffmcobalt-

its the prospect of finding something "neat" that drives... I dont think he's hoping to find the lost city of gold. Stop being such an ass.

asking FFMCobalt to stop being an ass is like asking him to stop breathing, for him they are one in the same. As long as he is still breathing, he's an ass.

Isn't dumpster diving a form of physical labour? I mean, you have to use some energy to search through the whole bin. So, if he finds something useful, can't he still enjoy the fruits of his phsyical labour?

No kidding. I'm getting pretty tired of seeing him foul up perfectly interesting threads like this. How can one person be such a freaking intolerant jerk? Can I not lurk in peace? Is there an ignore feature on this board?

Yup, and isn't Newegg from there as well? Bet you'd find a lot of Epox dartboards... er, REFURBS in their trash, eh? ;)

It's not something I would do personally, but I definitely see the appeal of it. Life today is so very safe, and there's very little adventure in our day to day activities. I don't look at it as grubbing through garbage at all. I look at it as urban treasure hunting! It's not the find, it's the search, and the excitment of the search wherein lies the appeal. If you find something, so much the better, but the real reward is the experience and the stories you and your friends get to tell later. Asking why a dumpster diver dives is like asking those ship hunters why they look for their treasures. Don't they know that the fish sh!t in the water and it all falls down onto the wrecked ships? Why do archeaologists look for their relics? Don't they know they can get dirty doing that? How can they live with themselves knowing they didn't earn wages and buy the things they find? And what if they soil their trousers, or (gasp!) touch water that a fish has sh!t in, and don't find anything at all? How in the world can these crazy people look at themselves in the mirror?

But what do I know?

Personally I see nothing wrong with dumpster diving.... It is totally different from pan handlers...

I don't think it is stealing because the items are 'thrown away'. If anything, you're stealing from the BFI or whichever trash management company they're using.

It's not 'unclean' and I don't think people would physcially 'dive' into the dumpster. Your own mouth is more nasty at times.

Religiously speaking.... I think God dislike people who are wasteful.... so why waste a perfectly good 3Com hub when you can take it home and make good use of it?

That said, I've never been to a "dumpster diving" before... but I've intercepted tons of hardwares before they go to the dump.

"Whut? you guys are throwing away those old compaq servers? Stop, let me get something out of it first...."

Let's see, I got a 3Com 12 port hub that I"m using at home which I'm going to upgrade when I get cable connection.
I got a brand new in the box, lexmark print server (they got rid of it because it was no longer a standard)
6-7 sticks of 32 meg dimms from discarded old Dell desktop.
Compaq LTE laptops (2 of them, probably p1? Which I turn around and donated to a church)
4-5 20 gig scsi drives
