BLOOMINGBURG — Residents have been shouting it at village board meetings for years: Shalom Lamm orchestrated voter fraud in the Village of Bloomingburg in order to push forward his 396-unit Hasidic townhouse development, Chestnut Ridge.

On Thursday, the FBI arrested Lamm and charged him and two others with conspiracy to corrupt the electoral process - voter fraud. Former Mamakating Town Supervisor Harold Baird has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to submit false voter registrations, according to court papers.


According to the federal indictment, Chestnut Ridge developers Lamm and Kenneth Nakdimen and their associate, Volvy "Zev" Smilowitz, bribed people from outside the village with money, subsidies and other items of value to entice them to vote in the March 2014 village election. Lamm and Nakdimen, through their real estate company, allegedly paid one recruiter $500 per voter, with payments totaling $31,000. The conspirators allegedly backdated false lease agreements for uninhabited properties they owned in Bloomingburg, picked up mail from uninhabited homes where fraudulent voters were registered, and planted household items like toothbrushes and toothpaste to make unoccupied apartments appear lived in.

But most Americans don't care about local elections which actually happens to be where most politicians who go on to higher state and federal offices learn the meaning of "he who sits by the pot eats".

While I don't particularly have a problem with non-citizens receiving a slap on the wrist for voting I also don't really care that they do. Our view of government says it's just powers are derived from the consent of the people.

I view the greater harm as the disenfranchisement of others from strict voter ID laws.

Since our state was willing disenfranchise 600,000 legitimate votes per likely fraudulent vote the greatest harm to the legitimacy of the election was by voter ID.

That actually is the sad point of all this. He continues to claim fraud but if he's somehow right is it possible fraud helped him win? He's so stupid that he can't see the flip side of his own argument. It reminds me of when he was arguing for that we need a wall to stop immigrants and that walls are inpenetrable and mid argument said "yes they could climb up it with a ladder and down it with a rope"

Mostly agreed. Few illegals are so dumb or so ill-informed that they try to vote. There's nothing in it for them except grief.
