The trials I have suffered the last 2 years have only brought my faith into a stronger light. I had staph and strep infection last year that could have easily taken my life. This year I had opoen heart surgery (quintuple bypass) and was within inches of my life. I know the power of prayer brought me through both of these events. I would hope and pray that each and every person can find Jesus and know his power.

I managed to get through some good old life threateningly severe pneumonia without prayer; I haven't had anything life threatening since. Maybe after God realized he wasn't getting any prayers from me, he left me alone; whereas he keeps piling the shit illnesses onto you to keep himself well supplied in prayer.

Blame your surgeries success on God if you want, but at least toss a cookie to your surgeons while your at it too.

was your cardiothoracic surgeon praying as hard as you were?

just curious.

:hmm:

Do you think that it's possible that he gained a great deal of the strength and comfort he needed to keep fighting by having faith in Christ?

I don't see why it has to be Christ specifically.

It doesn't, but why CAN'T it be? The placebo effect is fairly well documented, why does it have to be a sugar pill instead of faith in some other thing (a god, rocks, magnetic bracelets, pogs, whatver). It just seems that some people are feel accosted by other people having faith. Many of the atheists on this forum claim part of their distaste for religious folk is the religious pressures they put out, that they're pushing religion, etc. Well, it seems that on this forum, at least, there are FAR more atheists who push atheism than theists who push theism. shrug.

I get the placebo effect, in terms of helping him through the recovery. He did say "It got me through it," He didn't say "the power of Christ fixed my fat-encrusted heart."

fair enough.

but there's a bit of discounting, or simply ignoring the fact that it was modern medicine, and the skilled hands of a physician that were 99.98% responsible for actually saving his life.

...It's not like I would sit here and claim that God killed my brother, who (a skilled physician in his own right) was far too young to die.

no, it was fucking cancer that killed him.

I don't disagree at all. As a medical student myself, and one who knows quite a few physicians, I'll admit it is somewhat frustrating when a deity gets all the credit for our hard work. 🙂

no one gives a deity credit for the work that doctors do.

well, maybe fools...but their opinions are invalid.

some crazy, unexplained things can happen in that OR for sure, but that's maybe 4% of cases. Several physicians may toss up their hands in bewilderment at these moments, but 4% of cases is also covered by something called statistics.

When it happens, more often than not, it becomes "thanks to the Lord for saving me through the vessel that was the physician." It happens more often than you'd think. Down here in South Florida the Hispanic culture is often very religious and it's not uncommon. shrug

Oh, I thanked the surgeon that fixed my heart, trust me. He said he was doing his job and no thanks were needed. I was kind of in shock with his reply as am in awe of his skills. I do know that the prayers that were lifted for me helped me get through the surgery and well on my way to recovery.

I once read something interesting.

Someone came over to a Rabbi and said "Rabbi, you don't need to convince me that God is real. I know him and he does miracles for me".

"Really, what happened?"

"I was driving my motorcycle on the highway. A truck came speeding right by me and blew me right off the cliff. God had planted a little bush there to break my fall and give me something to grab on to. He saved my life".

The Rabbi thought for a minute and asked: "Who pushed you off the cliff in the first place"?

Point being, that many times you hear people say God did that or that for me, I know He exists because he got me through some dangerous experience, etc. That is NOT faith. That's convenient faith. Real faith is knowing that God put you in that situation as well.

Proof?

Let's see.. Every great civilization man has ever known believed in a divine being/beings the Romans, Aztecs, etc...

I guess a bunch of Internet dweebs typing on their cum encrusted keyboards have finally outsmarted all civilizations that ever existed. I guess alot of time in the basement alone has given them much time to figure it out. You guys are mad women Wont get 10 feet within spitting distance from y'all cause you creep them out. I'd be pissed too and looking for any scapegoat besides myself.

Living evidence of Heaven and hell is there and with you always. I have plenty but its my own. You would dismiss it all being so cynical. If you have no faith, you may never find it. Faith comes first, then the evidence you seek will be found.

Jesus didn't believe in hell because he was Jewish.😛

Seriously? That's your proof?

More proof than you've provided. I'm going with the belief that man has had since mans inception over what a bunch of Internet champs/life failers think.

I'm going to guess that you don't subscribe to the early Monkey like beings that conceived "man".

Too bad Jesus doesn't love you enough so he gave you heart disease and other people didn't.
