I got pulled over at 3am a few months ago. I wasn't speeding, had no idea why i was getting pulled over. I'm a typical well dressed blond hair blue eyed guy in a nice car, so I'm not suspicious imho.

He came up and asked me "if I knew why he pulled me over". I honestly had no idea and said "i honestly have no idea officer, what's the problem?"

My license plate sticker had expired and I forgot about it.

He was nice though, and I think my 'honest' reply about not knowing it expired helped me out, because he just gave me a warning. He just let me know the next time the DMV was open....

I think the cop is about 99 percent certain if he's going to write you a ticket or not by the time he greets you at the side of your car. No story or sobbing tactic is going to change it.

I will say having delivered papers for couple years that being a delivery person did get me off with some warnings. It was 3:00 in the morning, nobody was out and I was doing 5-10 over in some places. Cop walks up and sees 5 laundry baskets of newspapers in the back of the car, checks my ID & registration and then tells me to slow down and have a safe evening. That happened 2 or 3 times while delivering.

When a cop asks you why you were speeding, you look him directly in the eye and say "I'm on my way to see my mother."

Officer: Do you know why I pulled you over.
you: I might have been going too fast.
Officer: I clocked you in at x mph in a y mph zone.
You: I'm sorry, officer
Officer: I'm going to write you a ticket.
you: alright.

Take the ticket, pay the fine, get on with your life.

lol good job chief you just admitted guilt by telling him you were going too fast.

If he says he is going to write you a ticket, ask him if he knows how much it will be. if he tells you the amount, ask if you can pay the fine immediately and in person to the cop.

I wouldn't recommend that in the US, in Mexico however, tickets are negotiable on the side of the road.

This is easy, Ive had my experiences Im 33 almost. This is what you say to not get that speeding ticket unless you were driving reallly really fast like 90mph and higher. This is exactly what you say,, YOU and the COP

YOU
"Hi sir officer sir"

COP
"Do you know why I pulled you over"

YOU
"I think because I was going above the speed limit"
"Im sorry officer sir, I always go with flow of traffic I just lost it back there for a bit"

COP

"Do you have any warrants, when was your last ticket"

YOU
"My last ticket was 7 years ago and I don't have any warrants my record is clean"

COP
"wait a moment"

COP is going back to his vehicle and checking out your license and reg and insurance and sees you have clean record.

COP
"You know what "name of person" Im going to let you go this time but I have your license number dont speed have a good day

YOU
"Have a good day officer thank you soo much for letting me go thank you sir"

This will get you out of your ticket. 75 percent chance. good luck and God Bless

And? News flash! He didn't pull you over for a nice chat! I know this may be a revelation, but cops usually know exactly why the pulled you over! Shocker, I know.

Had this been "The cop knocked on my door asking about the dead neighbor, what should I say?" Then my advice would be completely different. However, for a speeding ticket you are pretty much screwed no matter what. The best thing you can do is try to stay on the cops good side (in hopes he decides not to give you a ticket.) Acting like a dumbass is a sure fire way to get ticketed.

"When this baby hits 88mph, you're going to see some serious shit" :D

Hopefully they're a BTTF fan. Who isn't.

See my username. See my avatar.

I'd laugh and let the person go with a warning. Unless it was some ungodly high speed. Then again, I admit I'm more laid back than others in my profession.

As for the OP, since every police officer is different, there's no answer I can give. As for me, honesty gets you a lot farther than "Gee officer, I have no clue why you stopped me" when you are doing 20+ over the limit. But again, that's me.

play the gotta poo card. If he doesn't believe you, just poop your pants and start crying. That will make him back away and leave.

in all seriousness, how do you approach this while being polite and not incriminating yourself?

If you are speeding, and a cop pulls you over, do you really think that avoiding the words "Yes, I was speeding." will somehow magically prevent the cop from writing you a ticket?

Sorry, but I think my response might very well have been, "I wasn't in a hurry, officer. Were you in a hurry when you failed to yield the right of way to me at that side street stop sign?"

I'll talk respectfully to a cop, because of his position (and the fact he's armed), but I won't be cowed by them, especially if I'm in the right and he's in the wrong.

Last cop that pulled me over for speeding asked me if I knew how fast I was going (well, duh! of course I did!!). I paused, looked at my buddy riding shotgun, and then asked the cop, "I think the question is, do YOU know how fast I was going??" He had me dead to rights, there was no way I wasn't getting a ticket, and there was no way I was going to tell him I was probably doing 110-120 in a 55 zone. ;)

What do you say? I don't say anything. I just grab the cop by the face and throw him over the nearest set of mountains. No ticket for me.
