if you get pulled over for speeding, what should you say to the cop?

a while ago when I was delivering pizza, I was driving at a decent speed (maybe 5 over limit) and a cop pulled out of a side street RIGHT in front of me... I had to slow down and then was basically riding his bumper (unintentionally, honest) because he refused to catch up to the limit and was going 5-10 under... then he turned onto a side street again and I sped up to my old speed. I caught a red light up the road in a turning lane and then sure enough he pulled behind me. the light turned green and I made my turn and then turned right right away into the next shopping center where my Domino's was. right when I turned in, he turned on his lights. i parked and he came to my window and asked for my license, insurance, proof of ownership, etc.
then he asked me, "so what were you in such a rush for?"

i didnt really know how to answer because if I had answered him "well I was getting back to work to get another delivery" or something, then I am basically admitting I was speeding?
but if I say I wasn't rushing then he might get pissed off?
I forget what I said but it was something like, "I dont think I was rushing, just getting back to work" and he went on me about riding his ass and then "flooring it past him" where I said, "oh I didnt floor it, I just downshifted so my engine probably just got louder, sorry"

then my boss came out and they talked for a bit and he came back and said "ok well i put an official warning in the system. dont mess with the brookhaven police (LOL) and do that again or you wont get off as easy" and then he left

SOOOO, my question is... if you get pulled over for speeding are you supposed to be like, "oh sorry officer, I won't do it again" (admitting guilt)
or do you play dumb
"oh sorry I had no idea I was speeding" (insulting officer almost?)
or do you deny
"oh I wasn't speeding" (piss cop off)

or what do you say???

EDIT: oh and when they ask for ID, should I hand my military ID with my license?

Just go along with whatever BS reason they give you for pulling you over, there's not much else you can do.

Officer: Do you know why I pulled you over.
you: I might have been going too fast.
Officer: I clocked you in at x mph in a y mph zone.
You: I'm sorry, officer
Officer: I'm going to write you a ticket.
you: alright.

Take the ticket, pay the fine, get on with your life.

Never got in trouble from your folks? or at school? everyone gets the same line. feign ignorance.

(unless you were really really blatant.. you can't pretend you didn't notice you were going 80 in a 35..)

My brother in law did a fat burnout leaving his work's parking lot in a '68 El Camino once. In front of a cop. When the cop asked "What were you doing?" he replied "I was being stupid.". And the cop let him off with a warning.

...sometimes honesty works I guess. :)

I normally immediately apologize and say "I'm really sorry, I wasn't paying as much attention as I normally do". Or say there was a kick ass song on the radio and your foot got a little heavy and say it was megadeath. All cops love megadeath. You'll get off with a warning everytime.

Last time I got pulled over and was asked "Do you know why I pulled you over? I said "No, why did you pull me over" he repeated his answer, not wanting to admit to speeding I repeated mine. I was polite and adressed him as sir, etc etc, but it seems when he didn't hear the answer he expected I was asked about the presence of weapons, meth, ocycontin, alcohol, etc and then got to get out and do a sobriety test before he let me go with my ticket, because I was being "evasive".

That's the thing; from a stricly legal sense, the best thing to do is say as little as possible and not incriminate yourself.

But cops have a lot of discretion, if you show some contrition many times you will get off with a warning. So it's a dilemma.

this.

also, it pays to not have your car inspected b/c you may get a ticket for this, which is easily fixable, and not the speeding ticket.

or don't have your license on you, and you will get a warning for this in lieu of the speeding ticket.

note, this may/may not work, but it worked for me.

i did the same thing when i was 16, but i covered an undercover cop car with gravel while doing the burn out. i basically said the same thing, they lectured us for a while and let us go. i also did it a couple years ago playing with speed bumps at the mall, apparently the cops didnt like that either. he asked me what i was thinking, i told him i wasnt. he let me go as well.

as for the OP, i did get a ticket one time on my motorcycle for taking off from a green light too fast. he thought i was speeding due to the quickness i left the car next to me behind. i got it tossed out in court, but the guy was an asshole about it on the scene. searched me, my bike and everything. some cops are just assholes, you have to make sure your ducks are in a row and go up against it in court.
