Thinkpads are good performing, very reliable laptops today. If you ask me to find some cons, it would be appearance and price and that's it.

We use IBM T23s and T42s at work....they absolutely PWN the Toshibas/Gateway/ and Dells that we have used.

i had to choose between an IBM and a toshiba, both used. toshiba had dvdrom drive i needed and a bigger hard drive, so i ended up getting it... now that i think of it, IBM would have served me better altho i doubt there would have been so much difference. toshiba works just fine, maybe ibm might have had a slight edge for what i use mine for (better video chipset)

As someone that works with and repairs various brands of laptops I'm sort of sad to see this happen. IBM laptops IMO on the whole have been the best built and most dependable laptops built over the last 4-5 years. That's not to say that Toshiba, Dell, HP and others haven't built solid machines (along with not-so solid machines.) IBM always has had a special place among the hearts of many of the techs I work with for a number of reasons other than things most end users see.

Although (again IMO) over the past year IBM has started to go downhill in many respects other than inital build quality. So maybe in the long run the Lenovo deal is a good thing. I just hope they don't trash the IBM brand name with a load of sub-par products or make things on the ASP side of the house any worse.

I love my T30, except for the battery life (not a mobile pentium is probably the main reason for that). I'm sending it in for repairs right now because of an intermittent problem, but I'm not really that mad. I don't exactly baby the thing, and it's 2 years old. But you can't beat the keyboard or the nipple.

IBM desktops, on the other hand, haven't been any good since the PS/2 days. Everything was proprietary, which makes it not much better than a Compaq. Although I will say that my old 200mhz desktop withstood quite a few of my frustration releasing kicks.

its not IBM as whole, just its crappy PC business, though its laptop's were the best part of its PC business.

you guys are pretty funny flaming about laptops even though you guys probably have very little extensive first hand experience. For one thing all laptops are outsourced. IBMs are decent but boring ass and has a few quirks. Toshibas are getting more horrible i've worked with 5 of their latest and currently have one with a 9700. I can't wait to get rid of it for an HP with pciexpress and X800 (it has numpad, i loved the predecessor until my friend broke the screen). I just got a new gateway today with a 9700 and Athlon64, loading windows on it now can't wait to see how it is. Also have an HP DV1000 coming in next week, that one looks very fun, although no real video card, but 2 built in headphone jacks! I hate sony but i kinda liked their 17" A270, too bad it didn't have numbpad and i had to return it cuz of a few bad pixels. THey have gotten pretty good now actually, but they charge at least $1000 more for the same specs. As for the worst laptop maker it has to be compaq. The bulid quality is always slightly lower/cheaper and their resale value is half of the matching HP model. Most laptops take a pretty good beating nowadays, i just put them in my unpadded jansport (sometimes 2 of them) and throw them around.

from IBM

What does this mean for IBM customers?

First and foremost, no surprises.

IBM has built its reputation on supporting its customers, and that will not change. In products, in support, in financing, or in quality.

IBM ThinkPad and IBM ThinkCentre? brand product lines will continue. They will still be serviced by IBM?s world-class service and support organization, as well as technology roll-out and help-desk services. Warranty Services that Business Partners perform on behalf of IBM PC?s will continue -- business as usual.

Current IBM PC customers will keep their client sales teams and IBM Business partner relationships. IBM PC products will still be supported by IBM Global Financing.

IBM itself will not only continue to offer a full range of IBM-branded products to its enterprise and small and medium business clients, but also offer award-winning products from Lenovo.

In short, your current IBM PC ownership experience shouldn?t change.

Into the future, the goal is to build on that experience. To combine the best of IBM and the best of Lenovo into an even higher standard.

I don't like Thinkpads too much cuz those things don't come with the Windows key. Everything else is fine though...
