I can't wait to get rid of it for an HP with pciexpress and X800 (it has numpad, i loved the predecessor until my friend broke the screen). I just got a new gateway today with a 9700 and Athlon64, loading windows on it now can't wait to see how it is. Also have an HP DV1000 coming in next week, that one looks very fun, although no real video card, but 2 built in headphone jacks! I hate sony but i kinda liked their 17" A270, too bad it didn't have numbpad and i had to return it cuz of a few bad pixels. THey have gotten pretty good now actually, but they charge at least $1000 more for the same specs. As for the worst laptop maker it has to be compaq. The bulid quality is always slightly lower/cheaper and their resale value is half of the matching HP model. Most laptops take a pretty good beating nowadays, i just put them in my unpadded jansport (sometimes 2 of them) and throw them around.

Um, you're a "laptop" pro and you like using HP's?

Holy sh!t, get the topic right.. I almost sh!t myself when I read that...

Its IBM's PC division, and only a majority stake.. Selling IBM entirely would be a whole different story.

Think of the Thinkpads! :(

Yes, I've used Dell, Compaq, HP, I even have a Toshiba. None match up to the IBM.

Any chance this will make Thinkpads cheaper, or that we'll get a cheaper consumer equivalent to compete with Dell?

/me has T42 envy (seems everyone has one but I'm cheap so I got an Inspiron 600m)

Most popular notebooks in my school are: T42, Gateway 450, Gateway Tablet (Gateway has contract with school), Sony VAIO (usually S series or A series), and THEN come Dell and whitebrand models (Averetec tablet is pretty popular because of price/tablet functionality.)

I'm sad, simply because their quality laptops will be missed. I guarantee the new laptops will just not be the same.

I have more laptop usage and repair experience in my left testicle than you have total.

Those Chinese ba$tared already making some of the IBM laptops as well as most of the Apple laptops and all of the iPods. That's just from huge Foxconn compound in Shenzeng.

thanks for being ignorant, asswipe. look at most of the electronics you buy, and see what country they were made in.

i would say the top of the line Sony Vaio's, and even some of sleaker Dell notebooks have ranked up there. Fujutsu's also cleaning up their act recently, and their thinline notebooks are eons ahead of what they were 5 years ago, and are much more innovative that anything IBM has to offer.

you must be ignorant too. Most notebooks and LCD's are manufactured in Taiwan, not China.

China != Taiwan

Under $2 billion? I'm surprised IBM let itself go for that little.

As someone stated, it is just the IBM PC division and not all of IBM. IBM makes over $6 billion in a month.

Nope they make $80-90 billion a year!
Though they spend almost as much as they make.

they are actually quite nice :) my dad still has a p200mmx humming along quite nicely, albeit the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. imho Vaio's have always been some of the best around, just never quite worth their money.

I haven't had a chance to experience the previous IBM thinkpads that weren't built in China but I had a T41 earlier this year and had a really annoying palm rest squeaking problem that wasn't able to solved by replacing the palm rest. The squeaking got really annoying and I dunno, maybe I should have thought about putting some kind of a cushion between the palm rest and what was lying underneath, but I eBayed it and got an HP zt3000. The build quality of HPs/Compaqs are pretty good if you get the right ones. The zt3000/x1000 build quality is pretty good and I have an evo n600c that I gave to my girlfriend. The business line of HP/Compaqs are pretty comparable to IBM. The one thing I do miss about having an IBM Thinkpad is the quality of the keyboard and the deeper pitch stroke to make it feel more like a desktop keyboard. For the zt3000, I do like the keyboard too, as it's firm and feels like it's pretty good quality. The widescreen display is nice too, as it seems like once you have it, you never want to go back to regular monitors since it's so easy to view 2 documents/2 webpages side by side.

I'm wondering too on the quality of the Thinkpads after this buyout, and anxiously await for new technology to come.
