thanks for being ignorant, asswipe. look at most of the electronics you buy, and see what country they were made in.

you must be ignorant too. Most notebooks and LCD's are manufactured in Taiwan, not China.

China != Taiwan

Taiwan is just part of China.

Those Chinese ba$tared already making some of the IBM laptops as well as most of the Apple laptops and all of the iPods. That's just from huge Foxconn compound in Shenzeng.

I thought Ipods are made in Shanghai, i could be wrong here.

Interms of build quality, IBM is pretty hard to beat (not counting tough books), but some companies (Fujitsu) are getting there. In everything else, IBM is not really ahead.

Anyways, IBM has wanting to get rid of this division for some time. Everything they do now is focused on the corporate side. No more SOHO consumers.

Under $2 billion? I'm surprised IBM let itself go for that little.

As someone stated, it is just the IBM PC division and not all of IBM. IBM makes over $6 billion in a month.

75 Billion last yaer. Only a few companies can buy out IBM.

Nope they make $80-90 billion a year!
Though they spend almost as much as they make.

Stop posting. Over 6 billion in a month can equal 80-90 million.

IBM annual revenue is $85 billion+ with gross profits at ~$35 billion of that. $6bil / mo. in revenue looks right.

From what I've heard, these Lenovo folks were contracted out to build IBM's desktops and laptops years ago. They're already built there, so you shouldn't expect all that much to change in terms of build quality in the near future.

Besides, like most big companies, IBM has a habit of putting their logo on things that they don't build themselves. It's like that "IBM" printer paper that you see at Staples... Do you honestly think that IBM owns their own paper mill?!?

Actually IBM contracted their PCs to Great Wall Technology (#2 PC maker in China after Lenovo) for a while now.

Name a better PC laptop, asswipe.

I'll admit my dislike for IBM laptops is somewhat dated.
Back in the days of NT, I had to do a roll out of 100+ thinkpads and it was a nightmare

That's too bad. I was the co-author of the tool, System Migration Assistant, which is now part of the ThinkVantage toolset for personal computing devices (mostly for ThinkPads). Also I was one of the designers for LCCM (now called RDM). Not exactly as quick as Ghosting machines and changing the NT SIDs (boy am I geeking out here), but it worked pretty well for networks at the time (aboot six years ago).

PCD personnel, mostly here in RTP, NC will not have to change their daily routine at all for the next three years. IBM maintains a clause that they have the option to extend it. Basically IBM gains money (and IBM's debt is assumed by China) for the sale of the entire division. China gains third place behind Dell and HP as the supplier of personal devices. IBM last year broke even for the first time in many years for this dision. And this is because they lumped ThinkPad into PCD.

Of course those folks will be searching for other jobs anyway because of the uncertainty associated with the sale and personnel involved.

I'm reading 10000 IBMers will now be working for Lenovo.

Headquarters in the US, with main offices in RTP and Beijing. Sales offices around the world. R&D in US, China and Japan.

Since they are in IBM buildings, I guess they'll move off campus? I guess we'll find out. I'd would have liked to be a fly on the wall of the Vice president in charge of PCD when he found out about the sale. Did he know already or was he caught off guard? Either way he becomes the CEO of Lenovo.

Never said notebooks and LCD's. I was just commenting on his ignorance by automatically associating the degrading term "bastard" with "china" for no apparent reason.

edit: i sort of see what you mean more, but either way, I was trying to show him that many things are made in china, and there was no reason for him to use the word bastard.

Spoke to the guy from IBM today. He says won't really make a difference since Thinkpads are already assembled in china....
