Google for a BMR (Basal metabolic rate) calculator. Answer as honestly as possible (lying really will get you nowhere with the calculator). It'll tell you how many cal's/day you need to MAINTAIN current body weight. Eat that much for a week or two(track food consumption on fitday.com). See what you gained/lost and adjust from there.

Yeah, this is correct. If you read through this thread, I go over it in more detail, and provide a link to a BMR calculator.

The link in my sig is good if you are willing to really do some research.

It estimated, that to keep my current body weight I needed to eat 0_0 2796 calories a day!!!!

That explains how I can lose it so fast.

Eating that far below your maintenance is not healthy. The weight you are losing is most likely not fat, and if you keep that up, pretty soon your metabolism will slow way down to compensate.

Shoot for about a 10% reduction from maintenance and go from there if you are trying to lose weight.

Actually, just eat your maintenance for 1 week, track your weight, and see what happens.

Here's the one I always recommend:

link

Make sure to click on "Daily Calorie Needs" to get a more accurate estimate based on activity levels.

Also keep in mind that it is only an estimate, and it could be way off. The only way to know for sure is to use that number as a starting point, track your weight and calories each day, and make changes as necessary.

A little inspiration for you folks working hard out there:

Who wants to go to D's Diner? (I do)
Who wants to go down to D's? (me)
Who wants to go to D's Diner? (I do)

There's a place right off the Gravenstein
Where the milkshakes flow like wine

The best damn breakfast Burrito
You can get anywhere anytime

When I think of them fried egg sandwiches
Well, my mouth starts waterin' hard

And them sweet potato fries
And onion rings taste just right
Cause they don't fry in lard

Who wants to go to D's Diner? (I do)
Who wants to go down to D's? (me)

Well fancy ketchup, bendy straw
This ain't your average ma and pa

Grab a booth or sit outside
Have a dose of rainbow pride

Order at the window sill
And watch 'em fry up there on the grill

Bring your daughters, bring your sons
They serve their franks on gourmet buns

Tell your friends to come and see
Cause no one serves it up quite like D

Tell your friends to come and see

Well, I'm already noticing a little bit of a difference. Where I had been weighing in around 196-201 I'm now down to 194-196. I also think I think I need to hide the scale for a little while. It's just sitting out in the open right now so I'm hopping on a couple of times a day which really isn't doing me any good. I want to see a smaller number each time I hop on and if I wait a little while between when I do get on the scale I'm hoping that will be the case. I've still got to figure out how to really enter the exercises I'm doing into the Spark Journal. If nothing else I guess I'll keep putting them in the comments section, at least until I figure out a better way to record them. I'm not getting as winded walking up "Cardiac Hill" on campus now (yes, that's what everyone calls that hill not just me ;)).

I do need to get better about the diet aspect. I have started eating more salads for lunch, but when dinner time rolls around I wind up eating things I shouldn't since the boyfriend doesn't want to change any eating habits. Granted I'm eating smaller portions which is at least a start.

Thanks again TallBill for helping me get motivated to get going. The contest is a bonus. I think it was actually having to post the "Before" pics publicly that's been one of the best motivators. I won't mind them being out there so much if I can say, see how I USED to look but look at me now!!

I'm doing terrible, my gf is moving, and I'm in between apartments. I'm no longer eating fast food, and the amount of veggies I eat has increased 10 fold, but still not what I should be doing.

I'll definitely try this combo, thanks Koing. I've gotten pretty good at cooking frozen skinless chicken breasts on my Foreman grill flavoring with the pepper grinder and Italian herb grinder. I don't add any separate salt. I actually don't add salt to much of anything. I've debated starting up on the South Beach Diet. My mom is giving it a shot so maybe it would be easier if we both tried at the same time even if we are in separate cities. :)

Edit: If this works out and I can get down to my target weight of between 135 and 140 I'll be psyched! The lowest I've gotten my weight down to in the past few years has been 169 and I looked much much better not to mention felt better. If I can make it to my goal then ATOT can have a thread titled "ATOT made me HOT!!" posted by a woman and it not be shenanigans. ;)

I was also curious about this and thought maybe ATOT had an opinion. A few years ago I had blood work done. It showed that I had an under active thyroid which they told me equals less energy, slower metabolism (if I remember correctly), feeling sluggish, etc. The doctor had given me something for my thyroid. I ran out of that stuff a while ago and never bothered to try to get a refill or anything different for my thyroid. Should I go to the doc and have them test my blood again to see if treating my thyroid problem might help? My mom has been telling me I really should and she used to be a med tech back in the day so I consider her pretty knowledgeable when it comes to stuff like this. I just don't like going to the doctor all that much. Do you think it would be worth it to go see the doctor?

Join the club. I'm still not able to quite meet my goals. I am quitting my job, which has made it difficult to go on the proper diet (too much stress). Also, my primary motivator (GF) has been out of town every weekend. Thus, I'm not getting any weekend workouts in.

Life's little stressful details really help ruin a diet/workout plan.

But, I am getting in two workouts a week (instead of my planned 3-4) and I am eating a bit better (fewer sodas and no more poptarts).

I use lifting as a stress relief sometimes.

I set new PRs in the squat and deadlift today at my first powerlifting meet. I weighed in at 194, squatted 440lbs and deadlifted 531lbs (no suits, wraps or belt). Those are 19lb and 30lb PRs respectively.

Definitely get it checked out by the Doc, but in the meantime I'd try taking in more iodine (Iodine deficiency is a typical cause of hypothyroidism). Just get 100% DV through whatever means (supplement, diet, whatev) and it should help at the very least (in my most unprofessional opinion). Couldn't hurt.

You could try using Kelp Granuals as a salt substitute, or Kelp tablets as a supplement. Both are loaded with Iodine. They can easily be found at any health store, or a Whole Foods if you have one in the area.

Iodized salt will also work if you eat enough of it, but too much can lead to water retention, high blood pressure, and other effects of high sodium levels, so it might be counterproductive depending on your physiology.

Just my 2 cents.

i'm really happy i joined this. i'm feeling good, losing weight, getting stronger, and eating somewhat healthier. i even shaved over a minute and a half on my two mile run time since last week this morning. i'm now down to 15:09.

once this is over in december i'm thinking about doing a triathlon or an offroad triathlon. granted i wouldn't want to do this until spring since the water would be so f'n cold but it sounds like fun. it would be nice to talk about it in a fitness forum here. hint hint.

Someone yesterday mentioned that it looked like a grew an inch. Maybe it's all that 84-row barley used to make my beer. I'm surely mutating.
