That's why I drive a 13 year old truck. No stress!

I bought a 10 year old used car. In great shape, but it's got some bumper scuffs and a ding in the trunk lid, so another scratch is just another scratch, it wouldn't be like the first scratch on a pristine car. I'd imagine it's much easier on your peace of mind.

Only wanted to corner him so he had no choice but to drive the same speed as every1. But he proved to be suicidal.

If a car takes up 2 spots (close to the "store/place") then that car deserves to be keyed. If you know the driver is a complete asshole then he/she deserves to have her car keyed.
If they are innocent then the keyer should have their fingers shot out or something. I hate idiots that get the 10 second thrill from keying a brand new car...

Save your money and insurance claim...

Find your paint code, go to www.paintscratch.com ... buy some flexible primer, your paint, and clear coat and repaint it yourself.

You can probably claim it, but I don't think it'd be worth it... I'm guessing your premium rates will most likely rise even if you don't tap out of your deductible.

Depends on your insurance. Vandalism often doesn't affect your premiums OR deductible. We got the windows in our mini-van shot out one night several years ago, along with several of our neighbors. (still had kids at home back then). Farmers took excellent care of us...glass company came to the house, replaced the broken windows, NO deductible, NO premium increase because it was vandalism...
Not sure how your insurance will deal with the scratch, because while it most likely IS the result of being keyed, it COULD have happened some other way, and you'll likely have to prove that it's the result of vandalism...

Didn't read all the replies but...

Getting cars keyed SUCKS!!! A well-to-do friend of my dad's purchased a new Ferrari some years ago and some schmuck managed to key four separate panels about five days later. So, just think... it could always be worse... but it doesn't always help ya feel better. At times like this... I like to hope karma works as it should.

I tried that on my last car and concluded I'm not good enough to make it look good. Also, this is a metallic car, that would likely stand out like a sore thumb.

Agreed. I found a nice walk through for fixing chips with touch up paint here.

Its tough enough with all that prep work to make it look passable on a high viability spot like a door panel. From the article 'A scratch is merely a chip on uni-directional steroids.'
too much work for the time it would take away from you.

The decuctable is $500, so I'll likely use the insurance.

Why does everyone have high deductables? My dad and I (18 y/o driver), both have a $100 deductable, and we pay abut $1900 per year ($850/6 months).

I guess it depends. I have a $500 deductible and pay about $620/6 months for two 04 vehicles.

OP, I know how you feel. When I bought my brand new SUV, some FATASS fvckers too stupid to know how to open the door, ding the door of my SUV.

No matter how hard you try, you WILL encounter stupid morons that just don't care about others' properties.

The other day, I ended up giving a nice ding and scratch to the door of a jaguar, that was most likely owned by a doctor. This was in the hospital parking lot, where spaces are a very, very precious commodity. Even though the spaces were delineated with double lines, forcing a 6-12 inch buffer zone between spots, the douche still managed to park the car diagonally, with the right rear wheel over BOTH lines, and pretty damn deep into the spot. The other side, was a huge SUV. I parked cleanly in the middle of the spot, which was possible only because I have a small car. There was no way I could get out of my car without bumping his door. I tried my best to do it gently, but it got dinged.

I feel no guilt about it.

First of all, I am driving a SMALL SUV <the crossover type>, not the big huge ones such as Hummer and the likes. See the thread about "What kind of vehicle you are driving".

Second, I parked my SUV right in the middle and plenty of spaces for anyone to open their doors. Get the story straight. So either they are too darn fat or too stupid to know how to park and how to open the doors.

Just love your attitude of "no guilt about it". Karma is the bitch, you wouldn't sing the same song if someone damage your properties.

I didnt ding the SUV, I dinged the jaguar. The SUV was absolutely parked perfectly in it's space. I only mention it because due to it's size, I couldn't reasonably have parked closer to the SUV than the jag, but thats in no way the SUV drivers fault - he was parked as good as any.

The driver of the jag however, is however, too stupid to park. He was over TWO lines, and then some. This parking lot is full to the brim by 8AM every morning. I'd have to drive around for an hour to find another spot. He should know better than to take up two spaces. If I can't open my door without scratching his car because HE can't park, why should I feel any guilt?

I wouldn't sing the same song if someone dented me cause I didnt park right, but thats not a problem for me, or you - I actually know how to park.

You're an idiot. You want to see how crazy someone else is, by acting crazy yourself? What kind of retarded logic is that?

Give me a break, and cut the act. You were looking for some fun, plain and simple. I can understand that. But don't try to make yourself into a hero. You are just as bad as he is. Sure, I'll play around with crazy people every now and then, but I back down when I realize they really are crazy and willing to take it way further than me, and I don't come here telling a story about how I was doing it for the good of everyone else.

And for the love of all things holy, please learn how to spell. If you want people to take you seriously, try not to sound like a moron.

I had a new 03 Mazda 6 and babied it until I traded for another... It got a few minor stone chips and a tiny dent on the drivers side that you can only notice if you look for it. Then I moved to a really nice neighborhood and the car gets egged one morning (I know it's one of these damn punks since I leave around the time they get on their school buses). I managed to clean it because it was still a little fresh, but what remained was the spiderweb scratches and tiny bits of paint came off. Very pissed off. Then I get another car and go to NY and those damn parking garage attendants at some point drove another car into my rear bumper and now there is a bolt indentation from the license plate holder. That's within 3 months of getting it. I told the wife if we go to NY, it's by train and that's f-ing final. I'm still careful about it though - parking on the first or last space in a parking lot and such...

But if I ever see anyone keying my car, s/he better run and hope I don't catch him/her. Well, if it's a her it won't be a beatdown... maybe a tackle.

Here are some solutions:

1. Buy a car cover. (hopefully the vagrants wouldn't abuse your car even more)
2. Setup a camera system inside of your to monitor activity for a day or two. Cheap systems are easy to setup and hide on your car.
3. Buy body shop composite. These rub out scratches easily and without a lot of pain. Just go to Pep Boys, Kragen, or similar.

I park my car far away too, but I know that some as-o has it out for me.

Dents I can deal with. I have 3 dime size dents on my car due to people slamming their doors open in the parking lot without looking. I also have lots of little chips all over my hood due to rocks from the highway flying up and making chips all over the place. I'm not happy but I'm just gonna deal with it.

Keying on the otherhand, that just plain sucks. My sympathies.

chip seal should be banned. i got 7 chips on my hood and had to cracks in my windshield from that. i got my windshield replaced but the chips in my hood are still there. touchup paint looks like ass so ill just leave them, but everytime i wash my car it pisses me off.

what pissed me off more than anything was that there wasnt a damn thing wrong with the road. it got new blacktop 2 years prior so it was still smooth and no cracks in the asphalt.

Sorry to hear that buddy. I know exactly how you feel.

Just bought myself a 2007 Camry SE. I parked the fathest part of the parking lots at work. A couple hrs later a black ass guy pulled in his half broken down car next to mine. His parking skill should be shot because both of his tires were crossing the line. I toll him that's very bad parking and he toll me to move my car. I decided right away that his head is too thick to even bother so I moved my car. Not gonna take any chances with my new baby.

Yesterday I saw a guy was swiving through traffic without carring for any1. So I decided to test how far he was willing to go. A SUV infront of his lane and the only way for him to continue his rage is to change into my lane. He was speeding up and I speeded up too. Now the space between my car and the SUV infront of him is too small for his car to pass. I guess the damn guy didn't want to live so he decided to cut me anyway. If I didn't slame on the break, it would have been a huge crash and my car would have been totalled and I might be in the hospitol cling on to my life.

Bought some "clear bra" put in the front to protect from airborn rocks on the road (my old camry really took a beating from these rocks). Now I mostly afraid something like this "Keyed" or some damn ass king my side. I already got a ding but it's not very bad.

What does "swiving" mean?

We feel your pain.

Someone recently pulled a hit and run on my husband's new 2006 Acura TL, purchased earlier this year. It's pretty scraped up, and he was so upset when it happened.

I drive a 2001 Honda Civic LX, and I don't even bat an eye when someone bumps into it. It's much less stressful driving an older/used car than a brand new one!
