Wasn't there some guy who dinged his new car on purpose just to get the pain over with?

I hate people. There are a few I tolerate.

I had my truck keyed a few years ago but it was old even then. it sucks when it is long and deep enough to assure malicious intent

OP, I know how you feel. When I bought my brand new SUV, some FATASS fvckers too stupid to know how to open the door, ding the door of my SUV.

No matter how hard you try, you WILL encounter stupid morons that just don't care about others' properties.

<- 10 y/o corolla here, no worries.

Also, try not to make your car so conspicuous. You'll see from the posts that follow that people like to torture people who park their cars away from other cars to avoid harm.

Yes, because japanese cars are magically immune from keys. I had a two japanese cars before this.

The Ford Escape has a lot of Japaneese DNA in it. It shares gets many of it's parts from Mazda and if you buy the Escape Hybrid, you are getting Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive technology via a licence agreement with Ford and Toyota.

I asked about on autopia.org and a few people say it might be around $1000 to have this fixed. Ouch. I was hoping closer to $300-500. Can you claim this on your insurance?

Yea I know, same thing as the Mazda Tribute, I debated on one of those, but got a better deal on the Escape.

Yeah one more who thinks people who randomly key cars should be shot. I think kids who torture pets and people who key cars are from the same mould. I'm not kidding either.

You can probably claim it, but I don't think it'd be worth it... I'm guessing your premium rates will most likely rise even if you don't tap out of your deductible.

Yea, that's what I thought. Sometimes I wonder why I even bother paying for anything other than basic insurance that is required. What's the point when they just raise your rates or drop you when you claim something?

oh yeah, it's going to be expensive. Don't think you can get a little bottle of the factory touch up paint and make it look good. I know from personal experience it looks bad trying to fill the line with touch up paint.

Yup, keying SUCKS! Did you double park or something to piss people off? Did you cut someone off for than parking space? Park in a handicap zone without a handicap sign?

The fact that the paint is metallic makes it worse. They will have to match the other door and the rear quarter panel. I'm going to go get a paint pen from the dealer to seal the bare metal from rust until I can save to have this fixed. Meanwhile, I will drive my wife's car (old POS 97 mustang) from now on the train station since she gets a ride from her mom to work. I don't want to give this punk the opportunity to do this again.

Nope. I got to the station pretty early, and there weren't many people driving around, so no cutting people off. I don't drive like an ass anyway, so that wasn't it. I parked to the far right of the spot, not over the edge, but right on it. Tere is not another spot on that side side though, so I wasn't into anyone's spot, and there is a wide 30 foot driveway between the edge of the spot and the next row of cars perpendicular to the row I parked in.

Cars are depreciating assetts. Time for you to buy ... no steal ... a bicycle.

Bottom line. They are hunks of metal that take you from point A to point B.

Oh, and you'll get over it.

I understand excatly how you feel. When I got my car 1.5 years ago I was sooooo careful with it, washing / waxing on a regular basis and taking real care in parking locations etc etc... Unfortunately, things you can't avoid are stone chips :( managed to get a rather large one in the city!!! Racked up a few micro scratches that you can't seemed to avoid from washing. Anyway, one day... someone managed to hit her on the rear quarter panel while I'm at a carpark... got her fixed on insurance (was waaaay to expensive to pay on my own)... lifetime rating 1 FTW :D Now I'm a bit less paranoid about it, seeing there's things you can't avoid even when you take all the care in the world. Sad that people have no respect for other people's properties!!!

Oh and to add my rant, I hate people that park over the designated spot leaving no room at all for the car in the next spot!! These cars should be blown up and removed!

a buddy of mine bought a new Dodge truck a few years back (or ten or so) and the absolute first thing he did when he got home is pick up his hammer and give the tailgate a good whack. That dent is still there but the rest of the car is still in great condition, lol.

My PT Cruiser is all customed out (not with gawdy chrome or stickers) and as fate would have it a truck lost its load on the way to work one morning and bits of steel cable were flung onto the passenger side fender and headlamp and part of my custom front grill area that cost about $2500.00 alone.
If I ever were to catch someone keying a car I would make them reverse eat the key, through their ass.

If there is a chance I claim this on my insurance, I need a police report right?

sorry to hear, OP.

i bought my 98 integra gs-r 1 year ago. i baby it like crazy, but with a 40 mile commute, i'd need a forcefield to prevent any sort of damage to it. to add to that, my carpoolmates are so careless and have more than once dinged doors in the parking lot.

isn't there a coating that you can get from the dealer than prevents you from having to wax for 5 years or so? it might be worth it, but i doubt it can prevent key marks. buying used really takes the stress off.

good luck with it.

I bought my '04 Mazda hatchback at the end of 2004. Had it less than a mth. I pull into a shopping center, go in and shop, come out and see a shopping cart rammed into my car.

Lift shopping cart over head, throw shopping cart at the cart return=feel good **LOL**

NEVER PARK NEAR SHOPPING CART RETURNS
