umm you did and a couple of other already. 😛
BTW, I should have mentioned that I am aware of the $20k bonus on the OP

Thats nothing. Go get a labor job with a roofing company or somjething. You will make twice that in 1 year with less hours and not have religious crazed arabs trying to kill you.

Its funny you mention it cos I already do that 😛 the problem is here in Miami everyone is doing it so wages are dirt low. No one pays more than 9 bucks for 10 hour work days and they all like to pay under the table.

If you think you will only be working 10 hour days in the military

your better off finding a better job and moving somewhere else in the states. trust me here do not do this for the money there are wayyyyyyy better options available to you hear.

I get what you're saying man but I'd rather pump bullets into taliban heads than to bathe in mineral spirits to remove all the 'chapapote' (tar) from my body. At least I'll be doing something that can bring me SOME honor

please do not make it sound glamorous war is not glamorous.

You should look into *when* you actually get the money too.

A friend's bonus was $20k, but it was like $5 after basic, $5 after first year, and another $10 after X number of years or something.

Plus they take out taxes.

Like others here, I'm not totally familiar with the TPS status, but as far as I'm aware, non-citizens may enlist, provided their status is documented. In fact, citizenship is granted for non-citizens after three years of enlistment (recently, even the three year requirement was waived).

One thing to note is that as a non-citizen, you will not be granted the same security clearances and therefore duties/opportunities will be limited in some respects.

how old are you?, yep war is not glamorours, true there maybe SOME honor in it, but it;s not all fun and games, don't go over there just to be a hero, becuase in the end you will not be one for the most part

I don't mean to make it sound so. I was just being coy. It's a big deal but it would take care of my money and citizenship woes in one blow.

THAT OR I could always marry a rich american woman 😉

The military also is probably a good avenue to upgrading your status to legal resident or even becoming naturalized.

In the scheme of things that's worth a LOT more than the 20K.

For the money? Seems like a shallow reason to join the military IMO. Money could be part of it, but if thats your sole reason for joining...well, I would hate to have you or people like you in my platoon (assuming I graduate OCS 😛).

hehe don't worry, man. I didn't really put that much thought into my original post however the overall idea is there.

I'm having trouble understanding why someone would WANT to go to Iraq. I guess that's a P&N thing, though.

I wouldn't go over there for $50k. No way in hell.

Ok, I realize that I should have worded my thoughts better.
I want to advance my life here in the US. I see becoming a US citizen as the 1st and biggest hurdle. Other than marriage, A way for me to do this without a strain money wise is by presumably gaining citizenship by joining the army and making some money while I'm over in Afghanistan. When I return (...) I may have some money in my pocket but most importantly become a US citizen.
there, I should have said it that way in he OP.

BTW, grammar is not my best topic -- sorry

well, the Army is currently offering $20k to accelerated candidates for 2 year enlistments. To some, that is a serious chunk of change.

The question is what qualifies for an accelerated candidate? OP, you need to find this out and when I say find out, I mean find out in writing. Also, it sounds like your recruiter was a douche. They should know all of the details about your legal status and whether or not you can join. That's their job. Find another recruiter.

I have a buddy that spent almost 2 years there enlisted in the army as a radio operator. Let me state a couple facts that he told me.

1. The heat index over there is over 140 degrees most of the time. Summer is over 155.
2. The air smells terrible there. Especially around any of the town because they have heaps of trash everywhere.
3. You will not be pumping bullets. You will be doing work in that hot sun and air that smells like crap getting paid squat. My friend only had to fire his gun once in almost two years.
4. Camel Spiders and lots of them. Google them and find out how they lay their eggs.
5. Nearly all of life's luxuries are gone. There is no form of comfort at all from the bed you sleep in to the food you eat. This is especially true since you will be enlisting as a grunt.
6. Despite how they try to keep you busy, the feeling of boredom is unbearable.

If you are ok with all of these things plus a lot of other stuff that you will hate which I did not mention then go for it.

Why do you want to be an American citizen so badly anyway?

Ok, thanks for your candor, folks -- Im off for a nice long run

If you're willing to think I'd hope you'd also be willing to chip into the pool.

I'm glad someone else saw that as well. I think the $20k is nice but the citizenship is the main goal.

One more thing. If gaining easy access to citizenship is one of your main goals, join the air force and forget all the macho crap. They may not have a signing bonus, but it really isn't worth going to Iraq for it. Still, that is up to you to decide.
