That $20000 bonus plus the other $20000 is alot to some. Then if you get shipped to Iraq or Afghanistan you get hazard pay in addition to your regular paycheck. You also get a Cost Of Living Allowance, not sure how much that works though in places like Iraq or Afghanistan.
Your regular pay is also tax-free in a combat zone (at least it was when I was in the Gulf in '91). That can make a big difference, and the money was REALLY nice.
Of course I was in the Navy, so I wasn't in imminent danger like an infantryman would be.
