...Wow. sucks to be you. You can be 10 generations away, and unless the color has been bred out of you, you are still an Indian by perception. Damn, self-hatred is a corruptive, destructive force.

It's their culture I hate. It's not mine. I'm a Trinidadian-American not an Indian-American. As for being Indian by perception, that is irrelevant. Race is irrelevant. Culture is what is relevant, and I don't wear 1-inch-too-short grey pants, creme colored dress shirts, a goofy mustache, and slicked down hair.

Sanskrit: One from our land, i.e., India. Loosely translated Desi means ?native of?, but for us the word holds a deeper meaning: Roots, Pride, Culture.

There are a lot of desis in Queens.
you learn something new every day!

Damn, I don't commit any of those fashion faux pas either... even as a "desi" (btw I hate that word too, only because it always sounded derogatory to me, in the same way as the n-word to Africans). Yeah that's definitely a EE/CS/FOB sort of thing, as I too am an engineer and can attest to at least trying to dress normally.

I guess I should clarify that while I'm not one of the "DESI/GUJU PRIDE" kids, I'm not some clueless whitewashed Indian either. Somewhere in the middle I suppose. I always felt that Indian people should be tight with one another, while also hanging out with other "Americans" the same.

Freedomsbeat212,

You hate the term Desi because you hate the fact that you you are Indian. I've read your posts, man, and can read you a mile away. I used to be the same way to a certain extent, trying so hard to align myself with white people, dropping my claims to membership, just like the "all my friends are cute punk rock girls" or "all my friends are white". Grow up, bro. You ARE indian, you are a brownie, you are dark, you are and always will be, and are percieved as such by everyone around you. Perhaps its the catholic upbringing that planted the seeds of self-loathing, since this self-hatred is very, very common among easterners that belong to western faiths. Learn to love your color and heritage, because noone else will do it for you, and even if you can snag some white girl to marry, you'll be sorely reminded of how very indian you are down the road. Being indian is wonderful, don't forget it.

Rant off.

I disaree. Being Indian sucks. Thank goodness I'm 4 generations away from that nasty culture.

Why does being Indian suck ? What the hell do you mean by nasty culture ?

Here's what I mean by nasty culture.. Baby sh!tting, money grubbing, stove burning, acid throwing, female baby killing, wife burning, dowry giving...

Dude, you have no idea how much I agree..

I'm Indian (both parents 100% Indian), and the reason I don't like being associated with Indian people, (FOBs or teenagers who have been here) is the fact that "proud" Indians STILL fight amongst themselves. I don't know how it is around you, but there's a hell of a lot of Indian people around here, and the ones that are proud of it are the ones getting into fights with OTHER Indians about who's the "better Indian" (direct quote.) Are you serious? Am I supposed to be "proud" of that? That's downright lunacy.

Being Indian has brought me nothing - I don't like the music because it doesn't appeal to me, if someone calls me a desi I laugh at them - I'm not religious so I have zero connections to India except my parents and my family (who live in India.) So while I'm in America, where I was born, raised and educated, I will act however I choose, which in my case, is NOT Indian AT ALL because I don't want to have that negative bullsh!t associated with me. People ask me if I'm Indian, and I say "Only on the outside." Have I been brainwashed? Maybe, or maybe the things I've seen Indians doing are things I don't want to be associated with. I would be proud of being Indian if being Indian was something to be proud of.

Edit: This post refers to Indians in America, not in India. Indians in India are some of the nicest people I've met (assuming I translated their words properly :D)

This conversation reminds me of a paper I wrote a while ago (sorry for plugging it again, I think it applies).. Indian has given me nothing to be proud of and a lot to be angry about... I agree with you man, be yourself.. if who you are can be labeled "white" then I guess that makes us traitors?

If Indian people label me a "traitor" I just laugh because those people aren't accurate representations of the country I'm "betraying."

Edit: After reading your essay, I can say me and you have different bases for our problems relative to Indian people. Mine more comes from the Indians I meet in society, as opposed to you, where it comes from your family. In my eyes, my family was the best thing to come out of India - they don't exhibit the traits that your family does. If you don't mind me asking, where in India is your family from?

You two don't realize that all those things you bash about indian culture are examples of negative that permeate this American culture as well, which the alternative I assume you must be adopting when deciding to shed your indian one. It won't take me long list abotu 50 things wrong with American culture, that apart from the initial question of whether a cohesive culture exists here to begin with.
When you step back, you'll realize that many people realize the things that are wrong with their origin and heritage, however, only those who are insecure about themselves feel the need to dump it completely, and even attempt to adopt the one they admire more. You can scream at the top of your lungs about how American you are, begging for that utopia where identity is NOT defined by skin color, and while I too think I am American, the reality is that I AM NOT THE SAME AMERICAN AS A CAUCASIAN ONE. You can go on pledging your allegiance to those different from you, whether through voluntary self-crticism, overt self-hatred, and all that will be achieved is a loss of respect for you by those you aim to please. You are like a girl who goes home with the guiy on the first night. Sure you please them and they take you home, but you better believe they have no respect for you, because YOU HAVE NO RESPECT FOR YOURSELF. An Indian who says that he is indian "only on the outside" is seen as an idiot, a fool. Believe me, buddy. You have no idea how stupid you sound, and yes I have many white friends who would agree.

..and to all those reading this thread who don't have an affiliation with Indians, what you see here is the sad manifestation of an invisible minority in America. These kids grow up in suburban (or even urban environments) where they feel the need to either become whitewashed or like a homey to fit in. There is noone on television or in any media outlet that teaches america who indians are, or provides a visible "hero" of sorts for indian youth to find validation from and aspire to be. Its so sad - Indian culture, an accepting an myriad culture by definition is disintegrating in this country because there is really nothing to hold it together. Indians, the ever passive, ever adaptable, ever reliable nobodies.
Pathetic.

My avatar changes often. I was an old black man, and old white dude and now some Wolfenstein guy lookalike. I don't even know what the avatar looks like when I choose. it. i just like to change it around. If anything, I like to play different people than what I truly am.

Everyone decides who they are and how they live their life.. No one should be judged based on if they chose to follow their parent's tradition of if they chose to embrace the traditions of the land they live in.. You're welcome to date hairy women for all I care, I enjoy the company of cute white chicks with their pink, fuzz free lips.. Hhehe.. that was wrong, sorry..

So, pray tell, who do you like being associated with? And don't give me the "Americans" answer, unless you really are that naive.

I'm not whitewashed. I'm as "western" as the black people that my Indian ancestors went to the Caribbean to replace, and that's it. Americanized yes, but I'm not Indian in the first place.

hahaha, bunch of desi kids trying to create a separate identity for themselves ;).

It's not easy to live in a Indian family but I wouldn't trade it in for anything else.
