Fried rice is probably easier with a spoon or fork.

2) Chopsticks = cultural thing. Forks are perhaps the easiest to use and even if my chopsticks skills were way up there, I'd still have to concede the fork is a lot better. But for the sake of being Asian, I use my chopsticks.

What do true asians do with fried chicken? How about baby back ribs?

It cracks me up how some people (who happend to be asian) seem to have this chip on their shoulder against white people embracing their culture. You should be happy, hell honored that Americans are so open and willing to try new things. Where is all this anger coming from? Jesus, I know black people who aren't nearly as angry as some of you come off.

eh:p

if we fried chicken whole it would be chopped up into small manageable with that nice big ol cleaver you see asians use. chop choppity chop chop! i've seen small pork rib chunks as a dim sum dish. i'm not sure big rack o ribs is a chinese tradition. if we do it, its sorta eaten with hands i guess:p.

They do a full chicken too, with banchan and everything. No rice, but banchan is WAY more asian than rice.

The drumsticks are just more of a value :)

And then I thought, "ewww, everybody is putting their spit in the shared dishes".

proper etiquette would be to use the other end of the chopsticks in serving from shared dishes.

How Invented: The first report of the fork as an eating utensil dates back to the 11th century, when the Venetian daughter of Byzantine Emperor Constantine Ducas used a small gold one. While forks were widely used by the upper class in Italy during the late Middle Ages, they were not known in England until 1608, when the English writer Thomas Coryate returned from a walking tour and showed his countrymen the Italian eating implement. The English were slow to adopt the idea; as Jonathan Swift put it in 1738, "Fingers were made before forks, and hands before knives." The English considered eating with forks effeminate and regarded them as jewelry. Used only on special occasions, an elaborate knife-and-fork set was considered an ideal gift for a bride. The first English monarch to use a fork was James I (1566-1625), son of Mary, Queen of Scots. Forks are not recorded among the utensils brought to America in 1620 by the first Colonists. Gov. John Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced the fork in 1630, but it did not come into general use until the 18th century.

Chopsticks came from ancient China. They have been in use as early as the Shang dynasty (1600-1100 BC).[4] They were widely used throughout East Asia. Tools like chopsticks were also found in the archaeological site Megiddo in Israel. This discovery may mean there was some form of trade between the Middle East and Asia in early antiquity. Alternatively, such tools may have developed independently in both the Middle East and Asia. Chopsticks were also common household items of civilized Uyghurs on the Mongolian steppes during the 6th?8th centuries.[5]

I like chopsticks for cooking, even if there are more efficient one-purpose tools, the chopstick can do more things with less cleanup in that regard.

Most people are just noobs when it comes to using chopsticks. Certain foods you just gotta have a chopstick (especially noodles).

LMAO this thread is hilarious, just read through the whole thing and all I can say is

LEARN HOW TO USE A FORK

I cant believe people say its easier to eat rice with chopsticks than fork, what a load of bullshit, for rice a fork works just like a spoon, you can clean a plate in seconds

And a fork can hurt you if youre not careful? Ive bitten my tongue more times than Ive hurt myself with a fork, because that was ZERO

Ancient greece is defined as 750 to 146BC so I guess you are right, they were in BC. from what I read, the fork they had was for cooking, the eating one came much later.

Chopsticks are idiotic, there's no way they work better or easier than using a fork and knife. There's probably a couple of billion people out there using them because that's what they learned to use (and tradition), but clearly they are inferior to a fork and knife combo.

Ignorance... you should never have to use a knife when eating chinese food

i worked for a chinese restaurant as a second job back when i first got married, and the owner would feed me free food every night. i told them i didnt really like chinese food, but his wife (she spoke engrish, he didnt) told me it would be an insult to turn it down. so, i ate every dish he gave me. he also wouldnt let me use forks, i had to learn how to use chopsticks. i think he was just messin with the american, but i did it anyway. i got pretty good with them, and can eat comfortably with them. ill still grab a fork if its available tho. even loose, buttered rice isnt hard to pick up with a fork, and long, skinny meats are easily stabbed and picked up with forks. i think its great learning about other cultures, and im glad i could teach my kids and their class how to use chopsticks for my daughters "show and tell" session back when she was in 5th grade. we still use spoons, forks and knives in our house, its just easier. but, we were raised using them. im sure that is the key factor.

I actually think its harder to use forks than chopsticks.

I don't know about you, but Chopsticks are much better for eating than forks. I can eat individual grains of rice, not struggle to pick up peas, eat noodles without them slipping off my fork and do all kinds of neat stuff.

I thought Koreans didn't use chopsticks...

... wow.

As per Wikipedia:

Unlike other chopstick cultures, Koreans use a spoon for their rice and soup, and chopsticks for most other things at the table. (Traditionally, Korean spoons have a relatively flat, circular head with a straight handle, unlike Chinese or Japanese soup spoons.)

Looks like I thought half-right.

i'm pretty sure all asian cultures use spoons for their soups

Ah-ha! Whenever I go out for Asian food, I use a spoon (or a fork on occassion) for my rice, and chopstix for pretty much everything else.

At least now I know Koreans do it that way too, I get so tired of eating a big pile of rice with chopstix, it takes a zillion years.

I just read something about how the Chinese chop down 100 acres of trees every hour to produce chopsticks, or something insane like that. Chopsticks suck.

I think vegetarians are awesome.

If God hadn't wanted you to eat pigs, he wouldn't have made them out of bacon

I tried a veggie diet and couldn't bench my norm within a week. But the point is Vegetarians have some awesome tasting food to eat. Try Roasted Vegetables with Bree penini

ill eat anything as long as i get to wrap it in bacon.

Ever bite onto the metal tips of the fork really hard on accident when you put the food in your mouth? Yeah, that sucks. Chopsticks offer more control in a smaller more nimble utensil. Stabbing the food on a loaded plate is also messier than being able to pick out precisely what I want from a dish without pushing the food all over the plate. Plus, you also don't worry about stabbing yourself when washing the utensils.

Chopstick + Spoon is all you need for Asian food, easier too clean as well.

Chopsticks FTW!

i keep seeing this argument come up in here... do you really think its that difficult to scoop with a fork? a good fork has long tines with angled ends on it, easily picks up food without stabbing the hell out of it. i can single out one water cress in a plate of chicken and broccoli with a fork or chopsticks. it isnt difficult, and using a fork doesnt mean chasing huge amounts of food around a plate until it flies off and hits the floor. gain a little reality there, sparky.

I heard that the Chinese chop down 100 elephants every day to produce ivory chopsticks.
