Next time the "safety officer" spews crap, try sending an email to a select group of 3 people. A) your boss B) the "Safety officer", and C) the Safety Officer's Boss. Give them 24 hours to respond with a retraction/revision. If no response, then let them know you are going to correct the misinformation for the "safety officer."
That way, you aren't being a dick to anyone, and you are giving the "safety officer" a chance to change his ways. Nobody is upset, your boss is happy that you handled things professionally, and the correct information gets out there. Would that be so bad?
No, that's actually a pretty good idea.
Ironically, most of the people who are calling me an asshole for what I did are doing bascially the exact same thing as me by saying so. They're calling me out in a public forum where everyone can see the criticism they're levelling against me, meanwhile, saying I'm an asshole for doing the same thing at work.
Sure, they can say "I'm not at work - I can't get fired from ATOT", but I knew I wouldn't get fired either, and being banned from ATOT (I'm not saying anyone would be banned, although I guess they probably could be, technically) would be more traumatic an event for a lot of the people here that having a boss be annoyed for part of an afternoon.
