I owned some guy at work today via email. I sorta got in trouble for it, but it was worth it.

I don't see a huge problem with it, though it probably would have been better to just inform him privately. It's definitly not the huge deal people here are making of it, at least it would not be in my work enviroment. (and no, I don't work for a small company, last I checked we had over 400,000 employees).

I once responded to a hoax email message my cousin sent me. I basically told her and everyone she sent it to that it was a hoax and were to find information on hoax emails to avoid sending this stuff out in the future.

She got all pissed off at me because her boss was on the list of people I replied to and I made her look like an ass.

PSA-If you don't want to look like a moron in front of your peers, don't send this stupid crap out without first doing a little research on it.

Well, at the end of the day You ended up looking bad. I think it was probably the tone of your email, rather then you actually correcting him in front of everyone that pissed everyone off.

The thing is, I didn't piss everyone off. I pissed off two people, and had 8 people agree with me.
You could have pissed off 0 people and been better off in the end had you emailed him directly.

Maybe. Too late now, though. At least the whole building isn't misinformed about Brown Recluse spiders.
And people can finally confirm that you really are an asshole.
See, everyone is better informed now.

Next time the "safety officer" spews crap, try sending an email to a select group of 3 people. A) your boss B) the "Safety officer", and C) the Safety Officer's Boss. Give them 24 hours to respond with a retraction/revision. If no response, then let them know you are going to correct the misinformation for the "safety officer."
That way, you aren't being a dick to anyone, and you are giving the "safety officer" a chance to change his ways. Nobody is upset, your boss is happy that you handled things professionally, and the correct information gets out there. Would that be so bad?

B I N G O ... B I N G O

and BINGO was his name-O!

'Notfreds wang grew chubby as he clicked the send button, "Now people will respect me!", he muttered under his breath. As the network sent the data, and the mail server distributed the corrected information to all employees his breathing became deeper, more purposeful. His nostrils flared and his mouth became dry. Notfreds ego had grown almost as much as his manhood.'

Definitely not the way to handle that situation. For the every person who sent you positive notes, there were probably five who sat there shaking their heads like your boss probably did.

:disgust:

I expect false information from the govt. I also expect the lowest possible quality in all govt workers.

I guess you get what you expect most of the time. Its easy if you have low standards.

Everyone who says I shouldn't have done it:

Don't complain if you ever call up a government office and they give you completely false information. Apparently it's a bad thing if anyone corrects them.

I see people giving out false information, or doing things wrong, all the time, but i butt my nose in it... especially if nobody is going to get hurt or scammed. So what, the 'saftey officer' can feel good about what he's doing, and everybody else can believe it or not, in the end it really doesn't matter... not for something as little as this. I guess if your life was lacking in accomplishments, this was an easy way to boost your ego.

Your boss sees you as petty now. The professional thing would have been to email the original sender, telling him his information is wrong. But instead, you had to 'pwned' him.

Right on!
