wow it took till you were 27? I figured that out at 9, but then again my parents weren't especially religious.

I really don't understand why you would feel like some burden were lifted from your shoulders when the whole point of Jesus is that if you believe that's when the burden of your sins would be lifted.

Unless you were raised Catholic. Then I get it.

Some people find freedom in the bondage of religion others don't. Different strokes kind of thing I think.

Jesus was sent by God to free us from the bondage of the man-made institution of religion. OP either totally misunderstands the teachings of Jesus or he just had a bunch of assholes feeding him a bunch of nonsense (my guess is the Catholic church).

Religion, or even Christianity is a burden. Might as well walk around with a ball and chain with hand cuffs on.

I don't think my family will be that upset. My girlfriend is Catholic, her mother is Catholic, married to a Muslim who doesn't practice his religion. So as far as my girlfriends side, nobody will care. My family will just try to debate with me, and that usually ends up with them getting frustrated and quitting. My parents wont care, its really the grandparents that are ultra religious.

You may think yours is better but that's only because you enjoy your particular brand of bullshit.

So what kind of life action do you want to do that freeing yourself from religious beliefs allows you now to do?

Not sure where the whole burden thing comes from, unless of course you are Catholic...

Same, my folks weren't very religious (but believe), but they were raised in a somewhat religious environment. I've basically shunned such beliefs for most of my life - as a kid, I just never thought about it much, and then I started to question the beliefs, probably around 10-13, and slowly discovered I infact just don't think any of it makes much sense. Took a few years to really say, you know what, I don't believe any of it. I'm atheist. Even after many discussions with my mom, she refuses to believe that I actually am atheist... she constantly says some part of me believes in a god. I say, sure... some super advanced alien, but nothing that actually gives a rats ass about what happens to us or what we do, let alone actually creating every single specific form of life.

Good for you! I truly hope that only people who are willing to live as a Christian would actually claim to be a Christian.

Waiting for the family to notice your facebook change is stupid, just clear that status update...imo.

But I agree, it is nice. The only time I ever go to church now is Christmas Eve, and I actually do enjoy that because of the music. And it's nice family time. But this is why you don't try to force 3 days of church a week down your kids' throats, Mom.

My wife and her family dragged me to church on Christmas Eve years ago...never again. I just sat there thinking what a collosal waste of time it was the entire time.

What exactly does "live as a christian" mean? Sex with kids, women are slaves, burn animals on altars? Which bits and pieces of the big book of fairy tales have you decided to follow in the interest of living as a christian and which parts have you chosen to ignore because they're inconvenient? Your view of living as a christian is about as valid as the other billion people who each have invented their own personal little version of christianity.

It is a big deal. Now I wont judge you for being a lovely human.

No, but I'll judge you. Say something like that again and you'll be gone.

My parents are nominally Catholic, and I was raised as such. In my early teens, they had me go through the whole "confirmation" thing. The experience solidified in my mind that it was just so much pointless dogmatic nonsense, and I haven't been Catholic nor even Christian since.

Enjoy your time in hell! Or purgatory! Or whatever the fuck Islam says.

This is whatever the fuck Islam says (per Wikipedia):

Quran specifically describes three types of punishment for apostates via these verses;
“The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;” [Surah Al-Maidah 5:33]."
