What's wrong with overweight people again? They are just a few pounds heavier than you, it's all genetics!

Because some people are so insecure with their own personal shortcomings, they have to rant and rave about a group of people that have some sort of disposition different from their own. Its called hatred.
My problem is with lazy people more than it is fat people. I just like to throw in a little hyperbole to mix it up a little. Judging by the 80+ posts in 2 hours, it worked.

;) So you are lazy too then..since you were on the elevator as well?

I *am* fat due to my genes.

First let me start off by posting a pic of myself. Not a particularly good one, but the only one I have online right now.
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/kyteland/DSC_0080_small.jpg

My last name, Kyte, comes from a scottish word meaning belly. Everyone from that side of the family that I have ever met or seen pictures of has the telltale "Kyte" belly. There is a reason my family has had this name for generations. It is genetic. I'll gladly admit that it is more pronounced in some because they don't exercise, but we all have it reguardless.

I am 24 and not overweight, but I have plenty of fat on my belly. I eat healthy foods, run and work out every once in a while, but I have plenty of fat on my belly. I spend a lot of time hiking, but I have plenty of fat on my belly. I don't look fat, and have very little anywhere else on my body, but I have plenty of fat on my belly.

Do you get the picture now? I'm not obese. It's not affecting my health. It's not affecting my lifestyle. Yet there is little I can do about it. It is genetic.

That is just on your belly, though. You just said you arent overweight. I'm talking about people who are 50+ pounds overweight, you see them snacking on Cheetos like the package is a feedbag, and after they finish up and lick their fingers clean, they tell you their weight is genetic. And yes, I had a co-worker do exactly what I just described. When I say "fat" as in "fat due to their genes", I mean FAT, not a little bit of belly.

I used ta weigh 198 when I was 18, because I quit running after I busted my knees up playing soccer.. now I weigh 170.. but it sure as heck wasn't easy to get rid of that weight. Not in any way easy. (5'9" medium heavy frame)

All you skinny a$$es out there that can eat more than 1800 calories a day and maintain your weight need not comment. Some of us have to exercise and maintain a near diet almost constantly not to be a "fat ass."

Stationary bike, then? Like I said I do when the weather is too sh!tty to run in?

Yup.. that works fine. I don't fault anyone for saying people should exercise, just that it really isn't the same as when you are just a little flabby if you are carting an extra 30 pounds around.

That and stationary bike won't do crap for you unless you push yourself perty hard and do it for at least 30 mins.. I burn more calories running for 20 than I do biking for 40 unless I'm really aware of my HR while biking.

I still plan to lose about 40lbs more, and I'm running.

I really think most of this is a matter of willpower and motivation.

Ok, well I have something to add to this..

About 8 months ago it hit me, I was 27 years old 6' and 270lbs. I started on weight watchers diet and I am now down to 196lbs.. However I cannot break this wall. So about 2 months ago I started working out, to break the fsking 196 wall. I do elliptical for 30 mins, weights for 30 mins, and then jog (6.5-7.0mph) 2 miles almost every day. (some days I don' t have time to do the last jog)

I can see my body trimming up, but I can't freaking break the 196lb.. It is freaking driving me nuts. So anyway I guess my point is, that for you overweight people (myself included) you need to realize that you are overweight, and make a decsion to change it.

Now, someone who knows, help me break that freaking wall.

If you can see your body is "trimming up", but you arent losing weight, then you are losing fat but gaining muscle. Dont worry about that.

nicely done!

If your cardiovascular fitness is up toit, start cycling. If you can get to the point where you can maintain 15 mph for an hour (on a real bike on a real road) or more, you will have broken through the wall.

Perhaps that is your optimal wieght? You are beginning to replace fat mass with muscle mass. One decreases, the other increases. If you are now getting trim you may never break 196. (without starving yourself to lose muscle mass that is)

That's true. I was just pointing out that the "fat gene" isn't necessarily a myth.

Edit: But it is up to the person with said gene to do something about it and take care of themselves.

Well I am not "trim" by any means.. I still got a spare tire.. It's just no longer the monster truck version, I think it is more like a saturn's.. :D

So do you think what I am doing now will continue to work off the weight, or can someone recommend something new for me to start doing... I am committed to losing this.. Plus at this point, if I don't go to the gym every day I am a cranky bitch. :p

It is more dense, but that isnt the point (at least not by itself). If you continue to weigh the same, but you are seeing visible results... you are getting results.

Very good point. What the scale reads isn't the only metric to go by. How you look and feel is also very important.

If you've gone for 2 months without seeing much more in the way of results perhaps it is time to change things up a bit. I assume you've been doing about the same stuff during that time. Try doing something completely different from your standard routine. You will begin to notice a difference.

When I was in college I started playing Ultimate Frisbee for 1-2 hours once a week, and I dropped a little weight just from doing that instead of going to the gym. It was just some different activity but it made a difference.

It's very insensitive and immature the way others are making fun of fat people. That being said, you can either take offence at their words, or use it as stimuli for change. If I was overweight, these types of comments would motivate me to make some drastic changes to my lifestyle.

Overweight people that are not actively making drastic changes in their lifestyle have no right to complain about their weight. You need self control to stop eating junk food and start exercising regularly. Fill yourself with a burning desire to lose the weight. You have to want it so bad that you'll consistently stick to your plans, come hell or high water.

If you are overweight, then it's time to make the change right now. Start off slow to get in the swing of things, then build your momentum and make more changes. Everytime you eat healthy, or exercise, use imagery to see yourself as you want to be. No one has to believe in you except yourself. Go, make some changes now!

If you're up to the challenge, I've heard that interval sprints can be quite the fat burner. The basic idea is to perform an all-out, balls to the wall, "if I even think of slowing down a giant lion will catch me and swallow me whole" kind of sprint, then rest and repeat. Sprint 100m, or 400m if you want to puke. Rest for 90 seconds, and then repeat. Start off with 3 (or more if you are up to it) interval sprints, once or twice a week. Work your way up to more interval sprints in less time. It helps to have a partner if you are very competitive.

I've tried it with 400m and 100m finishing uphill. They both really kicked my butt. I wouldn't try it for an extended period of time because I'd imagine this kind of intensity can really wear you out in the long haul. Anyways, something to try if you're willing.

There were lazy people before 1980.

Yes, but prior to 1980 the rate of obesity changed very little. After 1980, it started climbing and skyrocketed in the 90s.
I just read an article about a study that pointed out a direct correlation between the sudden increased use of High Fructose Corn Syrup in processed foods in the early 80's and the sudden increased obesity rate. The article was careful to point out that there wasn't enough evidence to prove causation, but there was certainly a strong correlation. Wish I could find the link.

Seriously, working at the CDC, you think she would have some idea that being a fatass = not good. And that moving 100' shouldnt put you out of breath unless it is near vertical, or you are sprinting. Never mind needing to stop to catch your breath...
Apparently, working for the CDC exempts you from following any of our health guidlines. Hell, even the cafeteria served fried chicken livers with gravy every Monday as recently as a year ago. People here are hardly what one might call "physical specimens" for the most part.

I used to work at a hospital, and it was the same thing there - lots of staff were seriously out of shape, even though (you'd think) they knew better than most the consequences of letting yourself go like that. But it's just a truth of human nature that while the heart may be willing, the flesh is weak!

I'm 5'8" tall and 35 years old.

November 1, 2003 - 232 pounds
Today - 192 pounds + massive energy increase + massive bench press increase + massive stamina increase + all my clothes are too darn loose. You know how much a new suit costs?

Still got a long way to go, but if I can do a lifestyle change (i.e. workout and eat healthy), anyone can. ANYONE. You just gotta make up your mind to just do it. And ignore the pain.

Props to all of us who are at least trying. I know it isn't easy (LORD DO I KNOW!), especially when everyday at work I'm surrounded by cows who graze constantly on fast food and sweets and some (not all, but some) constantly complain about gaining weight!

At work, I see people get on the elevator on the ground floor and get off on the 2nd floor. I've also seen people get on the elevator on the second floor and get off on the ground floor. People who look healthy enough (not limping, not pregnant, not even obese), but I've noticed, in general, the longer people work here, the fatter they get. Think there just might be a link?
