... Besides, the new movies weren't really that bad...they just weren't as good as the first ones. If you look at them independently, there are a lot of really brilliant bits. I'm in the process of watching them again for the first time in several years...just watched TPM.

YOU CAN'T BE FUCKING SERIOUS.

What aren't you understanding about this? The source material was ruined according to Lucas. They finally gave in and had to release the DVD versions from a Laserdisc copy they found. If you happen to be one of the lucky ones who owns the original untainted copies on VHS or something, AND have a working VCR then that's super... but that's rare and hardly how anybody wants to watch it anymore. ...
Even if you have an original VHS, it's probably pan-and-scan (not wide-screen).

Apparently when updating the original movies for the special editions Lucas forget to click "save as" and just hit "save"... is that clear enough for you? The original source of the untouched trilogy is gone forever for whatever reason. I'm not sure what the fat fucker did to it but that's how it is.

I know you're in denial and you just don't want to admit it, but you need to just say those words and let it go. You'll feel better, I swear. Say it with me: "the original trilogy is gone forever"
I'm sure Lucas was full of shit and he was just digging his heels in because he wanted people to accept his "Special Editions" as the definitive versions.

What happened to all the 35mm reels that were distributed to theaters? Couldn't they just run that through a telecine machine and... *BINGO! BLU-RAY.

I'm sure that when Lucas sees his revenue stream drying up, he'll make an "astonishing discovery" and find a vault full of them. He may even sell the TV rights and we'll have Geraldo host like he did when they opened Al Capone's vault.

Interesting. If he released it on BluRay people would accuse him of being a greedy arsehole yet if he doesn't release it on BluRay he is being an arsehole.

Er...? The problem is that he is releasing the movies on Blu-Ray, but they are not high quality transfers of the original movies. They're transfers of the transfers they did back in the 90s (which I think topped out at 2K), which have the updated CGI and other changes that people don't like. He's openly said he did this for cost reasons, which, considering all the money he's already made is pretty asshole thing to do in my opinion.

I think he is holding them back so when sales of video set #112,124 dry up, he can finally release a new set with the original release included.

Probably. I could see it prior to now, as the transfer technology was not that good, but now I think they do 8K transfers (which is about the limit of human vision for video detail, and should be indescernible from film stock), so there's no excuse for not doing it for the Blu-Ray and they'd have a super high quality digital master of the originals that they could then do whatever with, and this way they get it done before the original deteriorates any more.

I could have sworn that the federal government put them in their salt storage (under some cultural heritage thing, possibly to do with the Library of Congress, I can't remember).

This is all I've been able to find so far:

In the past two months alone, 20th Century Fox has sent 22 truckloads of film here.

The point of the OP is, you are WRONG. The originals are NOT available and Lucas refuses to release them again.

If Lucas has his way, you'll NEVER get the original theatrical releases on Blu-Ray.

He absolutely destroyed the movies with the "special editions." He claims that this is his original vision, finally realized...cramming fucktons of nasty CGI into every shot and making Greedo shoot first...ugh.

Fans DEMANDED that the theatrical version be released and execs saw dollar signs. They went to Lucas, but he gave some bullshit excuse about the original film being cut to hell and back and it's impossible to release a theatrical version. They had to use the laserdisc to source the DVD release.

That's right, they didn't use the 35mm film source, they used THE LASERDISC version.

Jesus fucking christ. I love star wars but get a fucking life already.

Sorry, wrong. I actually never liked Star Wars, but I understand what it means to our culture and to some who are a bit older than I am. I played a couple N64 games and thought they were decent.

However, it takes a special kind of delusional idiot to try and say that the prequels were "good movies." Lucas has demonstrated time-and-time again that he's not the genius people used to give him credit for; yet some are still in complete denial.

Wow.
