I'm not so sure that's true. I know it's legal for two motorcyclists to be side by side in the same lane. I've never seen anything to the effect that it's legal for a motorcycle to be side by side with a car in the same lane. I'd say its possible for you to go between them probably not safe, but most likely, not legal.

MOTORCYCLES

Motorcyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers. While everyone must follow the same traffic laws, motorcyclists face unusual dangers because motorcycles are hard to see (many motorcycles keep their headlight on, even during daylight hours) and they require exceptional handling ability.

Follow these rules to respect the right-of-way and safely share the road with motorcyclists:

* When you change lanes or enter a major thoroughfare, make a visual check for motorcycles. Also use your mirrors. Motorcycles are small and they can easily disappear into a vehicle?s blind spots.
* Allow a four-second following distance. You will need this space to avoid hitting the motorcyclist if he or she falls.
* Allow the motorcycle a full lane width. Although it is not illegal to share lanes with motorcycles, it is unsafe.
* When you make a turn, check for motorcyclists and know their speed before turning.
* Remember that road conditions which are minor annoyances to you pose major hazards to motorcyclists. Potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and grooved pavement can cause motorcyclists to change speed or direction suddenly. If you are aware of the effect of these conditions and drive with care and attention, you can help reduce motorcyclist injuries and fatalities.

I've often followed CHP motorcycle cops through traffic on the freeway while it was moving at 50mph. You're allowed to pass/share at 10mph faster than traffic

Shoulder my friend, shoulder. And if you block that, the person behind you will EVENTUALLY get around. And when they do, it's battle on the freeway time. And if you're happy with the thought of the other guy being worse off, maybe the other guy is happy he destroyed your vehicle and you'll have to cough up at least a few grand to replace it. And then both of you can sit back and laugh together about it when it's all over since both of you will be happy with the outcome. :)

Damn right. It's just a car, it can be replaced. And if you rearend the shit out of me then I'm going to be getting quite a lump sum. Rearends are almost ALWAYS the rearender's fault. The only exception to this I can think of is if someone cuts you off then slams on their brakes.

Yeah, tell that to the guy who rearended me and had no insurance. Totaled his car, messed up my bumper, but in the end, I couldn't do anything with the guy because he had nothing. Did it make me feel better I was better off in life than him? No. Was I pissed because he messed up my bumper (nothing bad but still) and caused $500 worth of damage to my truck which I couldn't recoup from him? Yes. Oh and yeah, it was a hit and run. And I got his plates, make & model of car, color, and yeah, nothing was done. If people think they can just sue anyone, you better think again. The cops didn't even do anything with the guy.

And yeah, I have insurance AND uninsured motorist. I couldn't even get the insurance to pay under uninsured motorist because it was a hit and run and they couldn't get the person who hit me to answer his phone so he could admit he didn't have insurance. Without him saying he didn't have insure, they couldn't verify he didn't have insurance.

There's the legal system for you. You want to play games on the road, well you better not expect the legal system to back you up.

Sraaz, it isn't your job to be an asshole and block cars behind you (and in fact, you're creating unnecessary hazards). Why are you so concerned with drivers who are going faster than you? Law enforcement handles the roads, not some wannabe vigilante.

I mean, did your parents not love you or something? Did you get picked on high school? No seriously, what the hell could cause you to act like such a dick to other people?

I get pissed off when assholes don't understand that the left lane is for passing. You're going 5 over? Sweet, some of us can actually go 10-15 over safely! You can choose to do the same, or move over.

Yeah, I used to split lanes all the time on my bike when I lived in LA. It was the best way to get around. :)

Yeah, I believe CA might be the only state in which lane splitting is legal; makes me want to ride there sometime just to see what it's like. Dunno if I'd ever actually do it, but at least the option would be there.

As for the OP...I agree, if you're in the left lane and someone behind you wants to go faster, move over and let them pass. It isn't the job of the average motorist to play traffic cop, and as others have said, by presenting yourself as an obstacle, you're creating an additional and unnecessary hazard.

That being said, if someone refuses to pull over for you, or is completely oblivious enough to not see you in the first place (and thus, IMO, shouldn't be driving to begin with, but I digress), don't lose your temper and break out the road raging-vigilante driving techniques. Calmly find another way to pass them.

Hence why we need a law here in the US like they have in Germany. If you are cruising in the left lane you will be ticketed there. We should have the same thing here!!

You are creating unsafe driving conditions and are a douche. Just move over, then get back when someone moving faster than you comes up behind you. It's not that hard. It's also important to stop at stop signs, and yield at yield signs.

I'm creating unsafe-r driving conditions than some idiot going 90? No. No I'm not. And I don't do it to make people follow the law, that's just the excuse everyone has been saying: "Follow the law and get over to the right!"

Nope, the look on your face when you have to slow down is just god damn priceless. Yup, it makes me an asshole, but welcome to life, you get to deal with people like me who use random strangers as play things.

The left lane is the safest lane for me and I'm not getting out of it until it's time for me to get off the highway.

you know how the traffic always slows down at rush hour? cuz of people like you

GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY ASSHOLE!

I won't get out of your way because traffic is congested. There isn't enough room for everyone in the right lane. There are 40,000 cars on the road going 65 in the right lane in a 65 zone, and 20,000 cars in the left lane going 75. Screw you, we're not all getting out of your way so you can go 90. If the road isn't congested, then I'll always move back to the right. But, if the road isn't congested, you'd be able to manage to pass on the right at some point.

Probably. Then they'll do something stupid to me and I'll get to sue. God bless America.

if you live. there was a road rage shooting here on the freeway by my work a few years ago. the guys were blasting at each other, driving up the 143 doing 90 or so... shot a pregnant woman in the neck or something and killed her and her baby. didnt really phase me until i found out it was the wife of a guy i deal with for work. seeing him afterward really punched it home.

i have done it before and would not hesistate to do it again.

id be more impressed if you waved a professional wrestler to the side and got him to tears... anyone can make an old lady cry.

my dad told me at a young age... if you look at a person in their car and yell at them, make sure to look at their face first. if you would still yell face to face, go ahead. if not, keep your damn mouth shut. worked for me so far.

I agree with you. If traffic is congested, it doesn't matter what lane you are in. My point was that if there is open traffic, you are in the left lane cruising, and someone comes up behind you, you are OBLIGATED to yield to the faster moving vehicle and move over. Basically, you shouldn't be in the passing lane to begin with, which is why you are obligated to get out of it.

The funny part of this is in real life he probably runs shadow to shadow hoping not to catch any attention of those that may harass him.
