in Oz it's usually used by uptight wankers who drive old V6 3.8litre Commodores or 4.0L Falcons- the new V8s would be streets ahead, not only in terms of fuel consumption, but perhaps more importantly in terms of emission control.

I got a couple gas guzzing 4-bangers. I can only manage to squeeze 24mpg outta them. Of course, I got a lead foot :p

The hell it doesn't. More displacement=less fuel efficient all other things being equal.

It took awhile, but the trolls have lined up on both sides. I think we're ready to rumble.

Just to remind you boys of the rules, the only weapons allowed are baseless personal attacks and made-up facts and statistics. Each team is permitted one Google search for a random link that vaguely supports their side.

Now, I want a good clean hard-hitting flamefest.

FIGHT!

There are plenty of V8s out there that get 25-30 MPG. Granted, not quite as good as a modern 4 cyl. However, I dare you to find me a 4 banger that provides the HP and torque of a modern V8 - let alone, one that does so while providing better gas mileage.

It's all in where your preferences lie. You want fuel mileage above all else, get a 4 cyl. You want some grunt / power, while still retaining acceptable mileage, get a V8.

Which one? Show me a V-8 that gets 30 MPG.

Chevy Corvette, gets nearly 30mpg hwy.

Their website says 18 city, 28 mpg hwy. Thats really quite difference between the two. I wonder why. they also mention that it is the only 400 HP engine that doesn't incur the gass guzzler penalty. That implies that V-8s are gas guzzlers, doesn't it?

might be something to do with the fact V8' are either truck engines or high performance motors- why the fvuck would you make a 1.6L V8?

Is that o.k.?

 to Laughing Gas~ Yay for All Motor!

Gasoline, nitromethane, who cares? If it's a better fuel, why not use it? Do you look down on people who use 100 octane fuel (and tune the car appropriately to take advantage of it) instead of regular unleaded?

I bolded the important part. According to your statement, the Corvette engine is the "only 400 HP engine that doesn't incur the gas guzzler penalty." This does not imply that V-8s are gas guzzlers at all, since all V8 engines /= 400 HP.

You want a 400 HP engine, you gotta pay the GG tax (unless you buy a 'Vette). You gotta pay to play. However, since most production V8 engines don't even come close to 400 HP, your argument is invalid.

As for the difference between the two mileage figures...what's your point? All cars have significantly lower mileage numbers for city driving, due to the stop-idle-go nature of city driving. Acceleration uses relatively large amounts of fuel (compared to your average) no matter what you're driving.

hey whats wrong with a 3.9-4.1litre falcon? I own one and it goes pretty good, not a good as my 5.8litre XC but still reasonable. as for the V6 crummydore well...nuff said
but you are right, our EFI V8's are miles ahead of smaller "economical" engines, especially in terms of emissions.
