Online social networking as become society's norm, and to actively refuse to participate in it is itself a sign of wanting the attention of being part of some sort of counter culture. Just like ten years ago if you walked around bragging about having a mobile phone you were striving for attention; however now, if you brag about not having a mobile phone you are trying to get attention. Same difference with online social networking tools.
I graduated college in 2000 and as such I did not have any sort of "growing-up" exposure to online social networking, as it did not exist then. I did not create a Facebook account until a little over a year ago and I have immediately found how valuable it is. Now as a returning graduate student (MBA) I have found how immensely useful networking tools such as Facebook and LinkedIn are - as an side I had a LinkedIn account for a few years.
As a MBA student I have gone to some MBA conferences & career fairs and essentially every employer/recruiter has info for the Facebook, Twitter, and/or LinkedIn pages. If you are not involved in online networking, you will be left out of many possibilities.
To actively refuse to participate in social networking is just silly. Now with that being said, of course it is silly to spend hours upon hours playing around on Facebook but taking a few minutes each day to keep up with it should not be too prohibitive for the average internet savvy person.
