Hey cut him a little slack. He's not like Jerboy who constantly whined with each post he made. I'm sure if AR had to do it again he'd refrain from posting about his situation

I'm left with the whole financial burden of paying for everything - tuition, books, bus fair, etc. On top of that, I have to pay rent to live at home and pay car insurance ($80/month) to drive the car a couple of times a week.

I mean, I understand that school is important and that paying for my own education is a great lesson in learning how to spend my money wisely, but who are my parents to teach me this lesson when they are the ones who can't even spend their own money wisely?! We are on the verge of selling our house and renting an apartment because my parents have racked up so much credit card debt, not to mention the money they owe the government.

Bah, I'm just upset that I'm not having as good as time as everybody else at college who's living on residence, and everybody who is on residence have said that their parents helped them pay for it one way or another.

Yes, it sucks. Sorry about that. Now, welcome to the real world. I hate to be harsh, but life isn't fair. Be thankful that you have both parents, many people don't, including me. I miss my dad terribly, and I'm 40 years old. Life sucks, expect nothing and take opportunities (legal ones, that is) whenever you can. Wait until you've been working your ass off for 10 years and some nephew of the boss comes in and gets promoted over you. That's the real world. It's hard making a living, paying bills, providing for your family, trying to keep up with your own hobbies, and saving for your kid's college. I make good money and it's damn hard for me to afford two cars, a nice house, computer stuff, tools, beer on the weekend, & dinner out with the ball & chain every now and then.

Life gets tougher from here on out. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately depending on how you look at it) you're learning the lesson sooner than most.

There are no entitlements on this earth except death and taxes...

I can't believe they're charging you rent to live at home. Thats a pretty crappy thing to do. Everything else isn't that bad.

True enough... but it just pisses me off when people not much younger then I whine and bitch and moan about that "hard time" they have with life... Maybe if he himself was a little more responsible, he would have had the foresight to perhaps SAVE some money, so that the financial burden wasn't so great.

That being said, I'm sure you're right in the assumption that he wouldn't have posted this if he had any conception of what the general response would be. Conversely, if he had put a little forethought (that again) into his "rant", or at least a showing of what he himself has done to correct his situation, then maybe I'll cut him some slack. As far as I'm concerned, he's a whiny little brat who obviously spent soo much time puffing, that he neglected to consider that there might indeed be a future past his next blunt...

Oh yeah. You can always do like I did and join the Army. It will make a man out of you, and they'll pay tuition in exchange for the best training you've ever had and ever will get. The Army will show you what you're made out of. You may think you do now, but when they get every last ounce of endurance out of you and you have to keep going or get your ass kicked, you'll find you actually can reach down real deep and pull out some more. You'd be very, very surprised what you are capable of. You'll look back and laugh at your former, wimpy self knowing what you're capable of now.

Do it man. Trust me on that one. I waited until I was 22 before I got tired of sharing an apartment with three bartenders and partying every night. I knew I had to grow up or I'd stay a bum the rest of my life. The Army showed me the way. I just wish I had done it right out of high school. I would have had money for college and the means to set goals and accomplish them.

What's the worst that could happen? Oh yeah, there is a war coming soon, but you'll be proud of that too. Even in WWII most people made it home.

There's no better pride than in something you've accomplished all by yourself!

Okay I'm a bit lost here.

The original poster may not be alone, and it was good that people shared similar/worse stories.

But where/why did the flaming start?

My parents pay for a great deal of my university expenses and I think the original poster is in a rather shitty situation, especially paying rent to live at home.

All whining aside, your premise is incorrect. "Everybody" else's parents do not have money socked away for their kids education. However it is understandable life would be easier for you if it were so in your case, and the jealousy is causing your discomfort and anger. I doubt you are the only kid in your school paying his way, look around. BTW it does not sound like your parents are attempting any sort of "lesson", if they are in financial ruin themselves then it would follow they cannot pay for your college education.

If your parents are in such dire financial condition perhaps this can work to your advantage in the way of student aid. Did you perform well enough in any subjects or college admission tests to qualify for a scholarship? Your parents couldn't have done that for you but it can be a substantial contribution to your education.

Have you talked to your parents about how you feel? Maybe they could work something out for you regarding your contribution to rent, if you are having trouble making that along with your school costs.

You're lost in more ways than one. The flaming started because he was whining about what he thought his birthright was a college education. Sorry, for most people it doesn't work that way. Yes, he's in a shitty situation, but it's going to stay that way until he does something about it. No one else is going to bail him out. It sucks, but the truth hurts. I don't think you've had to work for anything either by the sound of it.

He has a right to be pissed. A parent's responsibilty is to do the best you can providing for your kid. If you do and still come up short for college, it sucks, life isn't fair, but you did your best. Anything less than that and you should be ashamed. It sounds like if some you folks were around to dig into AmazonRasta's parents twenty years ago like you are doing to him now all of them would be better off.

And just to add, over the span of twenty years, almost anyone if they half try can put together enough money to send at least one kid to college.

Agreed, but you get the feeling this isn't just an overnight, "gosh Son, we'd really like to be able to give you money for school, but we spent it all on Vegas?"

Come on, give me a break... by 15-16 you should be thinking about socking away some cash, even if it's for a PS2, or XBox. And where in the students handbook does it say if you don't drink/toke/keg/whatever everynight in first year you fail??? Have fun while you're there, yes, but be responsible at the same time. Mommy's not there to wipe yer arse for you..

and for the record, tuition cost me 4000 pound sterling/yr when i went to college..

<-----does not pay for college (yet)

Neither do my parents....god I love grants and loans

Um... that's what financial aid is for... my parents didn't pay one cent for college...

I bought my own car... paid my own insurance... rented my own apartment...

If your parents can't even take care of themselves financially then why I are so mad? Maybe the lesson you should learn here is don't repeat their mistakes and make something of your life, on your own. Stop whining about not having a good time. It sounds like you're mad that your parents aren't funding your ability to have fun rather than funding your ability to be educated.

Once you've hit adulthood, graduated high school, etc., there really isn't a parental obligation to pay for your food and lodging. My brother and I did the same after HS when we lived at home, worked to pay our way through college. I also took out some student loans (all paid back now) and had some contribution from test scores. It was still easier and cheaper than living outside the home, lots of expenses you don't really realize while still in the 'nest'.

Sorry to hear about that but now that you've had your rant.......... time to figure out how to pay for your schooling.

Good Luck.
