The problem with blowing it out of porportion is that if you keep calling for these massive storm surges, and they don't happen, then people are going to start ignoring the warnings. Then when a truely massive storm surge hits you will have a lot of people that didn't evacuate. They are turning into the boy who cried wolf.

You know what? I've had it with this excuse.

A warning of bad weather is not a guarantee that it will happen. It's a warning that it MAY happen.

Saying a bad storm is on the way and having it not be as bad as predicted doesn't mean anyone "cried wolf". It just means that everyone got lucky, or that some people got lucky while some others got hit.

People ignore warnings because they're foolish or stubborn. And they do it no matter how many previous predictions have come true or not.

There are apparently many people along the coast right now in trouble because they ignored evacuation orders, and now good men and women are having to risk their lives to rescue these idiots. All because they thought it was someone "crying wolf", or they had their heads up their asses.

And I just cought the news for the first time today, I guess the monster hybrid storm isn't going to happen.

This is the monster hybrid storm.

P. S. 5,000,000 people with no power. #non-event

Oh really? Having grown up right near Galveston TX I can't tell you how many storms we had where they predicted 10 and 15 foot storm surges. Being that most of the whole damn southeast portion of Texas is all of 5 feet above sea level we should have had 3 feet of water in our houses countless times.

A long way from the OP to this point of the thread, but I'd like to point out how he took the smallest amount of knowledge (cat1 storm) and extrapolated it to the point of stupidity. I guess it is really easy to look like a moron when you discount 95% of the information available.

Quoted for being dumb.

Hundreds of thousands are without power in NYC alone. Flooding in various tunnels that run under the Hudson and the East River. Yep. Total non-event

I didn't say it was a total Non-Event,

I think we will see widespread minor to moderate damage, but no major devastation. Just a things like down power lines, trees, ankle level flooding over a very large area.

Stop posting. For some stupid reason, you're thinking skyscrapers were going to be knocked down or something when everyone except you knew it was about losing power and flooding. Guess what, both of those occurred at a very epic amount.

BTW, the big storm is supposed to form tomorrow when Sandy collides with the Nor-Easter.

You think there are two storms?

*facepalm

Sandy is the 'hybrid'. It is a Hurricane that loses its warm core (after landfall this time) and then the surrounding atmosphere enhances it further through the jet streams and various winds moving in its favor. Particularly the cold air that has been feeding into it for the past few days. This made her stronger than she otherwise would have been.

I normally don't agree with Caveman on anything but on this point I do.

You too, stop posting on something you know zero about.

This storm has broken records going back to 1821

There has never been anything like it.

New Jersey got a Hurricane landfall, first time since 1888.

It was a Hurricane until it collided with cold front and now a Nor' easter.

The Hurricane was a lot stronger than even predicted.

The list goes on, anyway STOP POSTING

The power is out... lots of food will spoil. Idiots will crash their cars because they cant remember that outed intersections should be treated as stop signs. Flooding will cause lots of economic damage and people will be without power for a couple of weeks.

This really will be a massive non-event.

Unless you work at an insurance company :p

So is it a big event? I get that a few million people are without power but when you compare that to the total population in the region it's very little. A dozen dead. Has the noreaster not hit it yet?

Is there more to come? I'm not saying it's a non-event but from my point of view the media is blowing this out of proportion. The quotes they are publishing are that the storm will either be bad or devestating. Hurricane Andrew and Catrina were devestating. This is meh so far.

The left like always wants to create super victems. Is it an event, yes?

Is it this super death storm that is wiping out the east coast? doubt it.

costly storm is a terrible measure of impact - population density, hitting a high value area will do that, as will inflation

Who ever said anything about it wiping out the east coast?

6 million without power, records broken in water height, many billions in damages. Do you guys need thousands of people to die for something to be an event?

Cost of storm is not a terrible way to measure impact because of density, unless you think that a cat 5 storm hitting an area with zero people is a bigger deal than a low cat hitting with millions (apparently you do?). Because if the latter, there was a major storm in the antarctic region yesterday and another one today. It's going to be devastating on the ice bergs in the area.
