This certainly is not a "non-event".

I'm over 700 miles away from the hurricane in the mountains of Western NC and the Governor has declared a State of Emergency for us (and numerous neighboring counties).

I honestly expected zero bad weather or problems from a hurricane for a (nice) change. Instead we have rain, high winds, expected heavy snow and many are now without power here. This is supposed to last through Wednesday. That's likely a big problem for us. With +60 mph winds and several days of rain we'll have numerous trees down. The trees in the mountains don't have deep roots because only a few feet under the topsoil is rock. Things don't look good here.

Fern
we shall keep your situation in our thoughts and hope for the best!!

My family lives in southwestern Virginia and they're getting the heavy rains and winds as well as heavy wet snow further west of them. Hopefully they won't lose power. Hang tight Fern, take of yourself/your own.

We haven't had power a couple of hours here in southern Ontario now. From my drive I just did seems pretty widespread. Some good winds around here too.

Such nonsense mods have given you this much slack, I used to get banned weekly for pulling 1/8 the shit you do here at Anandfront...I mean tech.

Lucky I am no mod. I hate useless distractions, canned talking points, dishonest divisive BS.

You hate conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians and have stated your dislike numerous times, you are a pretty typical authoritarian leftist that brooks no debate or suffers no differing points of view. I'm actually rather proud that i'm someone you hate enough to hammer/sickle.

Take a look further west to see a big cold front moving in from the west...

http://www.goes.noaa.gov/index.html

After the hurricane passes through headed west, the cold front pushes it back to the east with lots of moisture & falling temps along the front for lots more precipitation...

I am worried people will come back and see their was no mass destruction, hear from people who road it out that isn't wasn't big thing, and next time they won't evacuate when it will be a serious storm and not just an hype storm.

Wait until people see the pictures and hear the news out of NYC tomorrow.

Here are some random reports from a weather observation forum on this "non-event".

--

Sitting here in darkness with a remarkably strong signal and the wind howling is howling throughout the house. A large pine imby fell and clipped the side of my house breaking the bedroom window and damaging the roof. It then proceeded to seesaw over my house and into my driveway crushing my car's windshield and possibly more.
...
Watching ABC now, Hudson has crossed over into the lower west side. Saw a shot from 10th avenue and 23rd with everything underwater.
...
(From NWS) WATER 3FT DEEP IN 4 NEW YORK PLAZA AND 6FT DEEP OUTSIDE
...
We've gusted over 70 easily several times. This is absolutely ridiculous. The cracking trees and thumps send shivers down your spine.
...
This is about as close to biblical as I think any of us will ever see. Never again in our lifetimes.
...
Subway won't reopen for at least 2 weeks.

People like this should be at least vacationed from posting so nefariously.

The surge is now inundating New York City

13.7 feet under water from Canal St down

East Village under water

6 feet in the tunnels

4 feet in the subways

Stock Exchange is under 3 feet of water

5 people killed

The google crisis map says it is pretty much directly over DC and Philadelphia... why all the focus on NYC? I get the storm surge / coastal flooding bit, but what about the other areas?

Just raining hard here in Toronto. A woman here was killed by a falling sign from a Staples store.

I find it kinda funny that Virginia was one of the states to deny global warming ... Maybe they will wake up when their asses are under water? Hmmmmm

Yeah... global warming, like in the 1950s when the NE got hit with many Hurricanes.

Dumb shits.

Just remember what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. Meanwhile it was 78 degrees here on the left coast and I may have gotten a bit of a tan.

So what if they blow it up out of proportion? If they had your attitude, I'm sure far less people would care, and very bad things that could have been avoided, would happen.

Point being:
If hype is nothing more than hype--then no one loses.
If hype is not hype and the event is very real, then people are, hopefully, prepared.

I can be a rather cynical bastard at times, but I find these type of complaints to be epically stupid.

The problem with blowing it out of porportion is that if you keep calling for these massive storm surges, and they don't happen, then people are going to start ignoring the warnings. Then when a truely massive storm surge hits you will have a lot of people that didn't evacuate. They are turning into the boy who cried wolf.

And if four people die, you and others will blame the President and others for not being better prepared and not warning people.

Can't win either way with people like yourself.

Its nasty here in PA. I can hear the water trickling into my garage and my bathroom vent banging from the roof.
