10 whole feet? I've seen bigger waves at raging waters. So, we got a forecast of cloudy with a chance of heavy rain? As a california resident, I do have experience with heavy storms, so i'd expect Sandy to follow inline with those.

A 10-foot storm surge doesn't mean a 10-foot wave. It means that the level of the ocean will be 10 feet higher than it otherwise would be if the storm didn't exist.

You're a moron.

Surge is determined by wind speeds of the hurricane and local tides. If I'm not mistaken this may be worse as high tide is around 8pm so it will be closer to high tide when the storm begins to come ashore.
And size of the wind field

I suspect the east coast will experience another major black out due to this storm. All it's going to take is 3 or 4 main power stations to shut down and the rest will fall like dominoes. The states that are capable of sustaining their power demand will separate from the adjacent states and this will exacerbate the problem for the northern states power grid.

The power companies are being proactive. There's a substation in Conn that was inevitably going to flood. Residents were told, "we're shutting it down." Water, especially salt water & high voltage don't play well together. Ditto Manhattan - due to flooding, power is going to be shut off to part of Manhattan soon (if it hasn't already been shut off.)

Yeah - parts of Lower Manhattan were told their power may be shut off should it become necessary to protect the power system. Fire Island had it's power cut by LIPA. Steam pipes were cut off in Manhattan by ConEd to keep cold water from hitting steam pipes and causing them to burst. Easier to fix the damage if the backbone of the system in the area isn't also destroyed because the power was left on.

You are neither a mod or a sex therapist, so take your advice and shove it.

What you are is a mediocre, overly angry, little partisan putz enraged by a factual link that makes your Magic Mormon presidential candidate look like the "say anything" opportunistic ass that he is.

You are also a poster boy for a drastic change in our posting rules. Watch out, Bub, that time may be coming.

Listen jerk, in my post in this thread I said and I'll quote it so you don't fucking lie about it again.
Said by monovillage: My bet is that people are going to die because they agree with that opinion. This is a nasty storm and if you're in an area that's being impacted by it, including far inland, you're an idiot if you don't prepare.
I'm a small government conservative, but this is an example of what the federal government does and needs to do in our society to help keep citizens safe. They inform the media of dangerous situations and the media gets the word out to the people.

No where did I say I totally supported the bloated bureaucracy of FEMA. You took my honest assessment and matched it to a debate in where Gov. Romney talked about the huge debt this country has amassed and where he thought that more disaster relief should be moved to the States or locally.

So you lied about what I said, you lied about what Romney said and you did it in an irritating way. Sorry if I didn't kiss your fucking ass in the proper deferential, respectful way you want to demand.

Hide your valuables if you are forced to evacuate, heard on the radio that some are using twitter to coordinate looting similar to the twitter coordinated store flash mobs we have seen in the past.

I'm sorta confused about this drastic change in the forum posting rules you speak of. Based on the back and forth between monovillage and yourself, are you saying it's okay to bait another user misquoting what they said and/or putting words in their mouth? Then suggest that according to new rules the mods will hammer the poster who was misquoted/words placed in their mouth for responding with colorful angry words?

Such nonsense mods have given you this much slack, I used to get banned weekly for pulling 1/8 the shit you do here at Anandfront...I mean tech.

Lucky I am no mod. I hate useless distractions, canned talking points, dishonest divisive BS.

Maine is weak. They lose power just by looking at the poles wrong.

Yeah, except Maine isn't MA.

My power has gone off a couple of times so far, but the winds are supposed to get worse, I believe. A good amount of my fence has been knocked down though. And at least one tree that I can see from my house, but plenty of large limbs have come down.

This certainly is not a "non-event".

I'm over 700 miles away from the hurricane in the mountains of Western NC and the Governor has declared a State of Emergency for us (and numerous neighboring counties).

I honestly expected zero bad weather or problems from a hurricane for a (nice) change. Instead we have rain, high winds, expected heavy snow and many are now without power here. This is supposed to last through Wednesday. That's likely a big problem for us. With +60 mph winds and several days of rain we'll have numerous trees down. The trees in the mountains don't have deep roots because only a few feet under the topsoil is rock. Things don't look good here.

Over one million without power, up to 10 million at risk.

Sandy still hasn't even reached land. Non-event.
