Basically if you're not willing to enlist with the understanding that the needs of the Marine Corps override any personal preference you have on duty station, unit, MOS, or potentially living past the age of 25, then i would strongly advise against joining.

No man you don't understand, he's going to fly around the country & issue security clearances!

The hard part is getting them to stop harassing you, they are VERY persistent.

Bah. They're friggin Marines. You don't need to sugar coat it. Tell them your woman doesn't want you being cannon fodder at the moment and you agree. I gotta say your girlfriend is right. If you were going to marry her, and then never be home flying all around the country? Screw that.

I for one thank you for not joining up, and hope you listen to your mom and future wife and never join up. The Marines need people who can think for themselves, and you have proven that you have a definite lack of that skill.

Enjoy being whipped by your mom and future wife for the rest of your life, what you call "respect" the rest of the world calls being a spineless pussy.

What you NEED to do is APOLOGIZE to them for wasting their time to begin with. "I respect my g/f and mom in this..."....fvck that. Just about EVERY Marine's Mother and g/f DON'T want them to join, you're no exception.

You do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT have what it takes to be a Marine. Boot camp alone would have broken you. As for you being promised some cushy "Top Secret Clearance giving out job"....heh heh heh.....okay dude, believe what you want.

You MIGHT have a shot at something like that if you have a college degree already and went on to OCS, otherwise the recruiter is just blowing smoke up your ass.....it's his job.

Grow a pair man, and for God's sake whatever you do don't join anything where it's up to people like you to defend my country.

For those pointing out that I'm naive to think that once enlisted I won'tbe shipped out to Iraq/Afghanistan I would suggest that you research your facts. In every facet of the millitary there are HUNDREDS of jobs each section from which you pick from (infact the Marines have 348 roughly jobs to pick from). Only a handful are infantry related.

True and only 340 of those jobs are located in Iraq/Afghanistan, and the most senior people have already filled the remaining 8 jobs, also all the more senrion people have already did thier time in Iraq/Afghanistan so the Mariens will send ALL fresh blood there.

BTW - infantry related jobs may only by 50 of those 348 job but they make up 75% of the leather necks

...and wear a 3-piece suit, too, I'm sure. Also, he'll carry a glock and have a permit to conceal it...and drive around in an armored SUV.

I don't know how the Marines work, but in the Army, getting the MOS you want is almost guaranteed. However, whether or not you actually get to do what you trained for once you get to your unit is far from it.

When backing out of a sale at the last minute, never let the other side down gently. You're not sparing their feelings, you're just wasting their time and making it worse. Just cut it off and be done with it.

Don't you think they'd have the foresight to look forward a few years and realize they'll need to fill the higher spots in that hierarchy?

**Update 3/16
They came to my house! Woke me up at 11:30 and asked if I was ready to drive down to Miami to take the ASVAB. I sat down and explained that right now I'm not ready to commit to the Marines due to certain mitigating factors. In all honesty, I wish I could have conveyed to them how much I would like to join but it's not my decision. What one would consider as being soft, I look at as respect. I respect my GF's (future wife) decision and I have to convince her it's the right thing to do. She is understanding what this means for us and will come around by the time I'll be ready to enlist (roughly December of '07).

You obviously shouldn't be a marine then. You don't know their motto.

"Every Marine (From Cook, to Clerk, To CO)is a Rifleman first"

Kinda like in the Canadian Forces. Everyone goes through the same basic training.

I think the Marine Corps will get along just fine without you.

I doubt they will be broken hearted in the least.

(Though the recruiter will be somewhat bummed.)

Having spent some time in the service I should tell you a few things.

You do NOT have your choice of duty stations. You go where your told. If you are lucky they may look at your dream sheet before they cut your orders. But unless you are bribing the detailer dont get your hopes up. MOS has a lot to do with it though.
As a Navy Comm technician (ET) I was able to pick from a lot of nice little stations all over the world. One of my favorite was Iceland. (Its actually MUCH better than most people think.)
But if you get stuck with Boatswains Mate (because you couldnt hack anything else) then the only choice you get is which sh1thole port you want. If you're lucky it could be Mayport, FL. But there arent too many ships down there and its more likely you will get Norfolk. Which is hell for a sailor.
The Marines and Grunts have even fewer options. Especially now.

One other thing, the recruiter has absoultely NO CHOICE in your MOS. Thats for MEPS to determine. In the Navy we are guaranteed our A school in writing. But if you fail out you may be a deck ape. That sucks.

Everyone else, I think you get what they want to fill, not what you want to do.

Uh, no thats the Army.
The Marines are supposed to use their heads. Despite what the movies would have you believe.
They are supposed to be single-minded in their pursuit of excellence and performance, but they dont want robots or fools. They want sharp people.

I was gonna say, if you for once think that you aren't going to do a tour in Afgan/Iraq before you get to do your desired job you're fooling yourself. I can't count how many people were told, Oh, you scored high so you can do whatever you want, only to be dumped in infantry.

People with trigger fingers win wars, not people with pencil and pens dispensing paper work.

for the love of god, stop posting military questions on ATOT. That's what military.com is for. Unless you see military personnel posting hyperthreading questions there dont post military questions here.

OP, do you really think you will hurt a Marine's feelings if you tell him/her you dont want to join?

Let them down gently, HAHA
