Comprendo?

In 2004, there were roughly 1.4 million Active Duty troops. There were roughly 1,887 deaths.

I'm no expert in Math, but last time I cheacked 1.3/1000 != 1/100.

let's assume he meant iraq/afghanistan.

63.3 ... meh.

It's not about this being a "bad time to join." That's a stupid argument. There is no good or bad time to support ones country. I guess, for me, I have different priorities.

I agree with a others on this thread. You're absolutely sure you don't want to join then tell the recruiter up front, no need to waste your time and his.

The armed forces are not interested in 'guilting' or 'forcing' anyone into service, they know that having someone who isn't fully committed to being there only hurts them, say no and that's the end of it.

Just tell your mom to give your man card back, then turn around and tell your girlfriend to reach into her purse, and give your balls back. That should solve everything. ;)

Bottom line, it has to be something you are 100% sure you want to do, and it sounds like there is at least some doubt in your mind, whether it's because of family, gf, whatever. Don't do it. Trust me, they will hound you and pressure you and probably tell you all sorts of things like "you'll have your pick of jobs" etc, but the bottom line is, once you're in, your ass belongs to them.

There are a lot of great people in the armed forces, but it's not something you just do without being 100% certain. Kinda like marriage, except without the option of divorce ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHHA...

Yeah, I'm sure that everyone who joins the Marines only does it for the sheer joy of enjoying peacetime. The only thing you showed with that post is that you are a scared little boy.

Just so you no, even if you decline them now, they will be after you until you until the day you are ineligible now.

first of all, you have to be a total dunce NOT to "score well" on the asvab. I took that thing hungover and high with no sleep and scored a 97

Second, and more important - they will put you where they want you. you don't get to choose.

Good luck soldier

Everyone Ive ever known in the military has told me the same thing. Unless you come in there with a college degree already under your belt, you can either be a grunt, or you can be a grunt.

Also, don't fall for their bs about you "getting your pick of jobs". Give me a break, you have one destination, the middle east with a gun in hand.

Truer words were never spoken ... I'd strongly suggest not joining the Marines or the Army right now unless you want to go & die in the middle east.

Fixed.

too bad the death rate for our soldiers over there is lower than the homicide rate of DC:disgust:

Tell them how much you love Brokeback Mountain. Since that actor was also in Jarhead tell the recruiter you hope to meet some marines like him and then ask where to sign up.

I was gonna say, The litmous test for joining the Marines is if you truely believe you'll get your pick of jobs, then you are what they are looking for. Some one who believes what their superiors say is true and don't question it. It's the 1st step in the mind control that is the Marines.
Don't get me wrong, I fully respect that they are some tough SOBs that get into sh!tstorms and kick ass, but Every person I have ever known that was a marine has come out of the corps as clones.

QFT... you are screwed. Tell them you aren't interested and that you have found a job. (leave out, that your job is bending over for your mom and girlfriend ;) ) I guess if your girlfriend and you are serious enough for a long term relationship (marriage), then I guess it is inevitable. Most mothers are adamantly opposed to the military anyways, how is this news? You could try the Air Force if you scored so high on the placement tests. The Air Force is much nicer and posh. Check it out.

Tell your GF to fsck off, and do what you gotta do. The Marines will make you a man, and when you get back, you'll likely decide she was too controlling and not good enough for you.

Then you will beat her since Marines and Ex-MArines are much more likely to commit domestic battery than the general population.

That's what everyone says, though I managed to ward them off in one phone call when I was 17.

yeah, have one of your parents tell them you died...
i remember a friend in HS told them that he was born with his heart outside of his chest, lol.

you are under no obligation to let them down gently. you don't owe them anything.

next time they call just say, "I'm no longer interested. Please do not contact me again." Then hang up.

Don't tell them you're gay, don't tell them you're injured, don't tell them you're dead. Just tell them NO. As it has already been stated, you are the only one who makes the decision, not your mom and not your girlfriend. For all of you who say "don't join 'cause you'll die", go screw yourselves. There's no other way to put it. There is no better time to join, then when your country needs you most. And even though you may disagree with the cause, it is ultimately your country in which you are fighting for. Unfortunately I cannot speak from personal experience, after 9/11 I was in the 7th grade, but I'm 17 now and getting the recruitment process started. I want to join the Army. I care about my life, but if I died serving my country then that'd be fine with me, it would probably be more fulfilling then if I die at 100 years old and never serving at all.
