There's no other way to put it. There is no better time to join, then when your country needs you most. And even though you may disagree with the cause, it is ultimately your country in which you are fighting for. Unfortunately I cannot speak from personal experience, after 9/11 I was in the 7th grade, but I'm 17 now and getting the recruitment process started. I want to join the Army. I care about my life, but if I died serving my country then that'd be fine with me, it would probably be more fulfilling then if I die at 100 years old and never serving at all.

Then you will beat her since Marines and Ex-MArines are much more likely to commit domestic battery than the general population.

This thread is going places!

That's what they want, if you aint with them, you're scum. you aren't a man. or so they want you to believe. I fell sorry for you that you feel like you're kicking your country in the nuts. One could interpret that as supreme arrogance on your part, lol ;)

To be blunt, america does not need you. It will survive without you. If you don't join the marines (why on earth should I capitalise it?) then they won't even know. You're nothing more than a number in the marines as far as I'm concerned.

It is entirely your right to choose what you want to do, if they hassle you, tell them to shove it up their arse. What are they going to do? freedom of speech.... they aren't going to come and shoot you or something.

I really appreciate your time but I am not going to join.

Recruiters work in sales as much as anybody else. They get paid for it. They get paid for you. It's your life dude.

Do you really want / feel to be a soldier and join the US Army ?

Ask you that question, answer it honnestly and then it will be clearer for you to let them know what you feel about it.

Manuwell: It's the Marines, not the Army and my answer is a resounding yes. I feel that I will make my career in the millitary just not at this point. There is nothing better, personally, than to serve my country and right now it's about rallying my support at home. When I graduate college with my two degrees in a year, I will put the Marines as my top priority as far as a career and everything else will have to compare to it (no civillian job can honestly compare as far as pay and benefits, though).

Tell them "no thanks", and that's it.

Also, don't fall for their bs about you "getting your pick of jobs". Give me a break, you have one destination, the middle east with a gun in hand.

Truer words were never spoken ... I'd strongly suggest not joining the Marines or the Army right now unless you want to go & die in the middle east.

Fixed.

Every single day that passes I think about heading over there. I cant fvcking wait to head over there and give it my best. Roughly 150 days till I get to do just that.

We all end up with our small plot of land. Might as well earn it.
Hey, all the power to ya. If you go, come back alive, and don't kill too many people.

I've earned my plots of land without killing a single person, I like it better that way.

I congratulate you on doing what was surely a hard thing
One thing I have learned about Military "jobs" are that they can offer you one thing, and you may well find another delivered.
Good Luck, though, no matter what you do!

they told you that, did they?

Uh, lol, yeah. That's how these things work. You are given a list of jobs you qualify for based on your ASVAB scores and you pick and sign a contract for that job. With my prospective ASVAB scores, I would have my pick of any job. Contracts are legally binding.

Good luck with that. Once you take the oath they own you and the needs of the service trump anything else. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Joining the Marines is not an easy path. It will be physically and mentally demanding, and your life could potentially be full of danger. It is something you should do if your heart is into it, and only then.

Good luck with whatever decisions you make :)

i would assume he doesn't have the authority to issue security clearances, it sounds more like an investigator position.

ouch...

the truth hurts.

And when he DOES join in 07 and comes back (if he makes it back alive in one piece), she'll most likely be pregnant with another man's DNA!

WHEN THE FVCK DID ALL OF ATOT BECOME EXPERTS ON MY MARINE CORPS?!

First off, chambersc, posting about the Marine Corps here is like asking for girl advice here. The amount of unqualified advice here is astounding.

And if you think that only the infantry gets deployed or that you have a guaranteed MOS...you've got a lot to learn about how the Marine Corps really works. Basically if you're not willing to enlist with the understanding that the needs of the Marine Corps override any personal preference you have on duty station, unit, MOS, or potentially living past the age of 25, then i would strongly advise against joining.

**Update 3/16
They came to my house! Woke me up at 11:30 and asked if I was ready to drive down to Miami to take the ASVAB. I sat down and explained that right now I'm not ready to commit to the Marines due to certain mitigating factors. In all honesty, I wish I could have conveyed to them how much I would like to join but it's not my decision. What one would consider as being soft, I look at as respect. I respect my GF's (future wife) decision and I have to convince her it's the right thing to do. She is understanding what this means for us and will come around by the time I'll be ready to enlist (roughly December of '07).

For those pointing out that I'm naive to think that once enlisted I won'tbe shipped out to Iraq/Afghanistan I would suggest that you research your facts. In every facet of the millitary there are HUNDREDS of jobs each section from which you pick from (infact the Marines have 348 roughly jobs to pick from). Only a handful are infantry related.

The job that I was going to do (and will eventually) involes being issued a top-secret security clearance and then having the Marines fly me around the country issuing top-secret clearances to those who qualify. Don't automatically assume that I or the millitary are composed of morons who are blood-thirsty.

You're not kicking your country in the nuts. Trust me theres a million more like you out there who'll join. Follow the tuna my friend.
