Was Yucca not isolated or remote enough a destination?

I think in 50,000 years... human civilization will have either destroyed itself, or advanced so far as to solve the problem. Let's face it, no one needs to care what the mountain will look like a million years from now. If we're not flying into space by then - there's not much left but to accept our fate.

More to the point, why would Yucca need to be a final storage for this, if thousands of years from now we deem it unacceptable? It could be packed up and relocated after such findings, no?

It takes real modesty to speak of facts a million years in the future.

Detroit is available.

So are the great smokey mountains, certainly more earth quake resistant than Nevada.

Nice of you to volunteer your state Fern, nice to see a poster who does not believe in NIMBY.
Say Fern, how big is your basement?

lemon law has no clue about energy production, as demonstrated in many threads.

reprocessing would be great, France does it very successfully. I thought you would want us to be more like them.

We have an irrational fear of anything radioactive that hampers our technology development and our policy.

I think the Federal government should tax nuclear energy for the disposal costs, and give that money to Nevada in exchange for storing nuclear waste in the state. Simply cramming down a nuclear waste site down Nevada's throat for the benefit of nuclear energy industry is the problem.

They've been taxing them for years, but not taking the waste off their hands which was part of the deal. The utilities recently sued the feds over this issue. Nice try though.

Obviously not enough of it made it to Nevadans who are asked to take this risk to make it worth their while. Nice try though.

If we followed your logic we wouldn't have any power plants, sewage treatment plants, chemical plants, prisons, highways etc because no one wants them in their back yard. Yucca Mountain is federal land so it's not the state of Nevada's decision.

And the federal government decided to kill Yucca.

Not surprised. Sometimes it's like we're driven to prove we're too stupid to survive.

I have a wicked awesome idea.
-fill military aircraft with nuclear waste
-fly military aircraft to afghanistan
-dump nuclear waste in afghanistan
-bring all remaining troops home on the return flight

Afghanistan is as worthless as Arizona so why not? :D

Only an asshole would create toxins that kill for thousands of years.

waah. planet gave us life, it only has so much to give and if we don't take advantage of it all and get off this planet some day(hopefully sooner rather than later) we're done. it's over, why even consider the future when it doesn't exist? Our planet WILL die, things will get harsher, it will become harder to live. We need to exploit as much as we can without killing ourselves in the process. Nuke power is the best option, but you're to afraid of it because in a thousand years it might still be toxic. thousand years ago people were afraid of demons and witches, imo you're on the same level as them.

Maybe we can use the delay to rethink our policy on reprocessing of spent fuel and develop a fuel cycle that is less wasteful of energy content.

What a whack job, the planet gave us life it has only so much to give....

Hehehehehehe, you don't know fuck all. A thousand years ago people couldn't make poisons that kill for thousands of years which only assholes would do.

Human beings are pigs. They never clean up their messes. But they always promise they will. Nuclear power is a waste that many folk have invested their lives in and they lie and lie and lie about how they have a solution to everything. From day one nuclear has polluted and never cleaned up the mess. The reactors in Japan were perfectly safe. So was three mile island.

That's exactly what we need, a bunch of radioactive jihadists with superpowers.

Yucca will happen ten times over before reprocessing happens in this country.

Waah, 3 incidents that have killed fewer people than coal or oil based energy production. Seriously, if all you have to bitch about are our nuclear reactor problems, then sweet build more because coal and oil are far more dangerous to human than a nuke reactor. and humans have been poisoning the earth for thousands and thousands of years. when we destroyed the fertile crescent with our ancient farming techniques or terraforming regions of the world to meet our demands. waah

Planet gave us life, think of her as our mother bird. We are in this nest being given all the resources to make ourselves strong enough to eventually leave it because mamma bird can't stay with us forever. So the more we can work towards using up the resources our wonderful planet has given us and get the fuck off of it to spread Earth life throughout the universe/galaxy/whatevs.

moonbeam are you sad because big bad people are making your life unpleasant due to doing things you don't like?

It should be at least mandated that the waste should be pulled out of the SNF pools when it has cooled sufficiently and put into dry cask then shipped to a secure installation(s) for centralized interim storage until the government pulls it's head out of it's ass.
