You invalidated yourself from being anyone with good taste. Honestly I think the Germans were being polite. It's rare for a German to knock a local brew. It's something they identify with easily.
Shiner Bock is universally known as shit.

You're the only person in the thread really saying that. It's not amazing or anything, but it's a decent cheap regular beer that's far better than Bud/Miller/etc.

"Overall: great cheap beer for cooling off in the Texas heat."

"Medium-light mouthfeel, and pretty drinkable, though nothing extraordinary. Just a good "night out" beer."

"Feels good on the tongue, with an almost clean finish. A lot of drink ability for a bock I'd say, and I didn't mind its muted features."

"this is my go-to beer. "oh you don't have this? you don't have that? Ill take a shiner bock please."

Overall a C+/C-, which is okay for a cheapie. Not every beer needs to be $10+/4-pack or 8%+ ABV.

It's shit. What ruffles my feathers is the fact there are tons of other brews in the price range that knock on a b- rating.
It's initial taste is actually pleasant. But it's aftertaste is horrible and it tends to stick on a hot day. Undesirable.

Well everyone's entitled to their opinions :) I rather focus on what I like. Shiner is okay in my book, and it's a relief locally because at many bars your choices are as follows :

Bud
Bud Light
Coors
Miller
Miller Genuine Draft
Miller Highlife
Corona

and if you're lucky :

Shiner

sometimes Dos Equis or Heineken are available. Granted I'm talking average restaurants/crappy sports bars. A lot of places that I prefer to go to have a much larger selection, with micros, belgians, imperial stouts, etc, of which I have my own preferences.

Not everyone has the same tastes. I'll even respect a Bud/Miller/Coors drinker if I can honestly say I've seen them give a few other choices a fighting chance.

Here in Dallas I regularly see specials of around $1.50 to $2 depending on night and type (import/domestic). A lot of places will rip you off at $4 or even higher if you aren't careful though. One of my favorite places has $1 pints of guinness every tuesday. I think that's like 70p?

Where in Dallas? I want

When I traveled to Texas and Louisiana, I loved everything about it, except beer selection.
I went to a crappy dive bar last week in Belmont near Long Beach last Friday. They had two Stone brews on tap, plus about a myriad of imports in the fridge.
Guess I'm spoiled.
When I was stuck with shitty beer in tx, I drank heineken. Because it doesn't smell like a drunk vomiting thai food.

no it doesn't.

what a load of absolute horseshit.

perhaps you are confusing Guinness draught (their "porter") with their handful of stouts. but it is the same damn shit anywhere you go, whether it's the draught, extra, or foreign extra. You just pay 2x for the "privilege" to drink that horseshit in Dublin.

I'm not getting confused. What I'm saying is abso-fucking-lutely true. Guinness tastes like shit everywhere I tasted it in America except for one bar in Boston.

I personally enjoy Guinness. It's not my favorite by far, but almost every bar has it (thanks Notre Dame) and it's a good standby if all else fails.

I typically go imperials, ipa, local micros of any kind, smithwicks, Guinness, whatever anyone else in my group drinks. Luckily, we rarely get stuck at places without a good choice so I don't often need to go past the ipa.

that's because it's Guinness, and it sucks balls anywhere you drink it.

You just happened to be more drunk in Boston, which is not unusual.

Good point, I was more drunk in Boston but when I'm sober and drinking it in the UK it tastes alot better than the shit in America.

Young's Double Chocolate is one of my favs, but you really have to like a strong chocolate taste in your stouts.

Just got a couple of bottles and that stuff is bizzare, in a really good way. :p

Its like a weird chocolate/espresso/stout/awesomeness mix. Its fantastic!

Cheap boring macro lagers are usually between $1-2 for a pint.
Usually ales start around $3-4 for a pint.
If I wanted a good Belgian quad, then there's very few options and usually we're talking like $7-10 or so a pint.
