It is an oatmeal stout and is one of my favorite stouts anywhere. I haven't had one in ~10 years, but I miss it dearly.

I was at a place the other week that claimed to have it--but I didn't order it. I must have been insane.

Aside from the FE, Guinness brews extremely mediocre beers.

Shit, I was going to offer to post you some but I just looked up the delivery prices.

I'll just drink some and tell you it was yummy if thats OK? ():)

In all honestly, If I lived in America I wouldn't drink it either, it tastes quite different over this side of the pond. That being said based on some people in this thread, it may be entirely about where you buy it from. I did have one nice pint of it in a boston irish bar called the black rose.

no it doesn't.

what a load of absolute horseshit.

perhaps you are confusing Guinness draught (their "porter") with their handful of stouts. but it is the same damn shit anywhere you go, whether it's the draught, extra, or foreign extra. You just pay 2x for the "privilege" to drink that horseshit in Dublin.

that's not a black and tan anywhere. B&T is Guinness & Harp. Or to some random fucked-up extent, Guinness and Bass.

Most any bar I've been to will make a B&T if you order it, and they know what you're talking about.

...

I like B&T's.

Dont... and this is important to remember... Dont ever order one in a back street Dublin bar.

:(

I'm sure I will be able to find it more locally than where I was last week...just have to search. I'd love to be able to buy some large format bottles.

But, to be honest, There's no reason not to go Sammy Smith or shit tons of other excellent Oatmeal Stouts when need arises.

:D I've learned to stay away from all Dublin Bars, period. At least the centralized ones. Highway robbery--all of them.

I do like B&T. It is about the only way I will drink Guinness draught.

I see you guy mention Samuel Smiths a lot, do you mean the one in Yorkshire UK? They do indeed make an awesome oatmeal stout, I'm just surprised its popular or even available over there.

The worst part for me is that Old Rasputin in the bottle is nowhere near the same experience as from the tap. You just can't get anywhere close to the texture and flavor.

I wish you could get it in a can. Would be even tastier. :\

Trader Joe's is probably the shittiest overall place for beer, but depending on the market, some of them carry Old Rasputin. You could usually get it for $7/4; which is a great deal.

$5-7. At our bar though, you get a complimentary blowjob from the waitress with each pint. So we have that going for us.

Beer shouldn't taste creamy, it shouldn't have a head consisting of gloop and for some reason those widgets always make the beer taste weirdly greasy to me.

They are just a way to disguise cheap beer by adding a cheap novelty.

it is quote popular here, and has been available for many years. At least, 20 years that I am aware.

The Nut Brown, Oatmeal, and Ale (I think?) have been distributed over here the longest.

The Winter Welcome, Taddy Porter (these two have been available here at least half that time), and some of the newer Organic brews are more recent. They pre-dated the explosion of popular American craft brews, so while they always were and remain a niche beer here, they have a longstanding place in the hearts of American beer snobs.

Brewers like Old Speckled Hen have gained wider distribution somewhat recently, but I, for one, am not a fan.

Somewhat ironically, this is the most popular variant in Ireland itself. The name 'black and tan' is more associated with the old constables that use to give them grief way back in the day. A blacksmith is guinness and smithwicks.

I prefer Black Havens, but have only been to a handful of pubs who served.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout is a great brew, and it's fantastic out of a nitro can. Sure, it's a bit better out of the tap, but the nitro can in waaaaaay better than the bottled version. I've had the Guinness nitro can as well and yeah, that's very meh, but that's because Guinness is very meh. :p

I won't argue with this much, a lot of the reason I order Guinness anything is simply out of familiarity or it is sometimes the only non-piss option.

Yes, Foreign Extra Stout is pretty damned good. It's getting more and more common, though I've yet to run into it on tap anywhere. I know of a handful of sellers here in DFW that sell it by the 4-pack.

I'm quite suprised at that as Samuel Smiths arent a massive brewery. The oatmeal stout is by far their best beer though.

Old Speckled Hen is OK, its pretty much a mainstream mass produced beer though so if you dont expect too much of it its OK.

I know what a black and tan is. Which is why I didn't call it that. However I got the drink from the show "three sheets" and they called it a black and tan and said that in England and Ireland this is what that term refers too http://www.mojohd.com/mojoseries/threesheets/episodes/view/ireland

According to Wikipedia what I call a blacksmith (it's the name the pub uses) is actually a black and tan variant know as a special. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_and_Tan

I shall get a can tomorrow and test it.

Guinness original is OK (slightly better than meh, but not great) but thats cos it dosnt have a widget. Get a can of original and a can of draught and compare.

I must say, the Young's and Fuller's porters and stouts have always been very bland to me.

Also, Boddington's tastes like piss.

Hah, Boddington's tastes amazing after suffering through a bottle of bud/etc. It's really just another bland drinkable dinner beer like Guinness/etc.

Fuller's London Porter has a very high grade from a huge number of sources, but if you're spoiled by imperial stouts and 8-12% ABV beers, I could see a certain de-sensitization to the more pedestrian stuff.

Young's Double Chocolate is one of my favs, but you really have to like a strong chocolate taste in your stouts.

That's actually my gf's 2nd-favorite behind Belhaven. I'm so proud of her maturing beer tastes :D She now refuses to drink bud/etc.

Sounds good, If i'm ever in the area it's a date ;)

I do like Shiner bock, if you've had super bock that's not bad either, not the same though.

You invalidated yourself from being anyone with good taste. Honestly I think the Germans were being polite. It's rare for a German to knock a local brew. It's something they identify with easily.
Shiner Bock is universally known as shit.
