Would I include cumulation of the first 3 years of repairs? Because it was a lot. Purchase price was $5,500 for a '98 Dakota, repairs have been probably $5,000. Brakes, suspension, exhaust, ignition coil, water pump, a/c compressor, driver's side window, side mirrors, reseal rear window, ball joints, some piece of the steering column, currently has a freon leak somewhere, and probably something else I'm not thinking of. I'm gonna be driving the vehicle for another 150k miles just to recover the value out of it (currently at 78k miles)...

I have only financed 1 car, about 4 years ago, and will never do it again. Being mechanically inclined has helped out so much.

Edit: After reading this thread, I guess I left out some details.

I drive an '89 Honda Prelude, with about 125 thousand miles on it. The front suspension and exhaust system need some work, but it great for a 450 dollar car. Oh, and the only thing I have replaced is the battery and cables, at $45 dollars, it was not too bad, been driving this car for 16 months now.

What if your home is paid for and you're maxing out three retirement accounts (401k plus two Roth's) plus $400 per month into a brokerage account? Can I buy one over $15,000 now?

No, my father does. It's nice to have an in, though! I can get supplier discounts for most manufacturers, but usually they aren't that great.
