How long is your commute to work?

Im examining the pro's and con's of a job offer that was extended to me. The job is located about 45 minutes away with normal traffic, and probably 1 hour + with rush hour morning/afternoon traffic.

What is your work commute like and how does it affect you?

I drive about 45 mins to an hour each way.

I'd rather not but I can't afford a house closer to where I work.

In a few years I'll either have another job closer to home or make more money and buy a new home closer to work.

Either way, it's temporary.

What would your working hours be?

PS: I take an hour train on the metro into the center of London for work 🙂

59.3 miles

1 hour 5 minutes in the morning, 1 hour 15 minutes in the afternoon, it's miserable, especially after putting in a 9 hour day then knowing you have another hour or so to get home and putting up with all the idiots on the road makes it even worse. i'm moving as soon as i can to be closer.

I never understood peeps that drive 1+ hours to work each way

to me using 10+ hours a week on a commute is a waste

Couple years ago I lived in Phoenix and my commute was over an hour. I hated it and was going to buy a place closer until I was transferred. I felt like I was wasting what little free time I had on the road.

Now it's about 15-20min depending on redlights and traffic. I really like the short commute.

45 min by train to my work in SanFran. I live in Sunnyvale. Its awesome riding the train since you can work/sleep/eat/read etc.

30-45 minutes to go ~15 miles. Totally depends on what time I leave. It used to be 1 hour to 1 and a half hours until I moved last year. Now my office is moving next month but the drive should be approximately the same.

Moving definitely changed my quality of life though. It wasn't just the length of the drive but the quality of the drive. I spent most of my time sitting or inching forward or trying shortcuts. Very frustrating.

Now I flow against traffic on my way to work and on my home. Makes for a much more enjoyable ride.

In short, it effects me and I take it more seriously these days when picking a job than I used to since I realized what a difference it can make. My current commute is 25 min but there is no traffic which makes the drive very relaxing and I enjoy the time to reflect.

If it is a long commute then that increases the chances of unexpected traffic which means a 45 min commute equates to at least leaving an hour before I am supposed to be on the clock if I want to safely arrive on time daily. I also look at a commute as unpaid time at work since I am doing it strictly for my workplace. Longer commutes also mean more gas money and wear on my car.

A shorter commute generally means I arrive at work happier since I had to deal with less frustrations with traffic and I can sleep longer without having to worry about going to bed earlier. It also means I leave work happier and arrive at home happier for the same reasons. Most of all, it means more free time daily which is great for me and my family.

21 miles. Takes 20 minutes when I come in at 11. Takes anywhere from 30-60 minutes going home around 6.

It doesn't really bother me much even though my previous commute was only 5 minutes.

Work hours would be 50+ per week, and 50-75% travel

The only reason I am considering this horrendous lifestyle is the compensation package that is being offered to me.

mine is about 45-hour and yes, don't do it. You underestimate the misery of sitting in traffic. thats like working another two hours. Honestly, id like to have that extra time to do other things....dont do it.

26 miles, but about 1hr each way i f'ing hate it. It used to be bearable when it was warm and i'd just drop the top on my car, now that its cold and raining its terrible.

Mine is about 10 minutes if traffic is good. I used to do a ~45 minute commute, but decided to move to a considerably more expensive place just to avoid it. I couldn't handle 1.5 hours a day of rush hour traffic bookended onto my (already shitty) work day.

Well, it depends on your lifestyle I guess. Are you single or do you have a family? I'd say this could work for a single guy without a girlfriend but anymore is not worth it. Money and benefits are great but they are not everything. Work to live. Don't live to work.

10mins door to door. I cycle to work 🙂

I use to drive for about an hr each way. That was not so cool.

It takes me a shade under an hour without traffic, which requires me leaving my house before 6am. It can be multiple hours during high traffic times. The only reason I took the job is I can telecommute 4 days a week, and have flexible hours when I do come in - so I can dodge the peak traffic times. There is no way I'd do that commute daily. Spending that much of my life in a car is absolutely not worth it to me. Besides the extra time suck, I am would be an angry frustrated person from dealing with it.

Edit: Immediately before my current job I used to take mass transit to and from SF. It took a little over a half hour. I found it an enjoyable time to transition from work to home mind sets and let me read some good books.

Before that I commuted by bicycle for about six years. Took me anywhere from a half hour to ten minutes in the various jobs. I always arrived at work happy and awake. I also enjoyed the ride home.

In conclusion, telecommuting is fine, mass transit is fine, bicycle commuting is fine, any chunk of time in a car sucks.

Now that's what I want ... I'm 30 minutes to, 30 minutes from, no traffic, but lots of deer and moose. Had to hammer the brakes this morning to avoid a baby deer. I hate it, and I'm looking at moving to a larger center where my commute will be much reduced.

Mine is 45 minutes one way and filled with idiots.

How it has served me so far is neither negative or positive really... I am numb to all manners of idiot driving. I was never 100% like that before but the transformation is complete. The time I spend in my car is pretty much in a zombie-like state. I just listen to music and try not to die. It has become my quiet time to myself. It would be nice to live a bit closer to work but all in all I don't mind the drive.

morning: from door to bus to subway to door = 1hr ~ 1hr10min tops

evening: 1hr15min ~1hr30min

Public transportation in NYC ain't bad 🙂
