How long is your commute to work?

I have about a 38 mile drive to work. In the mornings, it takes anywhere from 50mins to almost 1hr 20mins depending on traffic. Coming home, it takes about 1hr to 1hr 40mins depending on traffic.

Unfortunately SWFL only has one freakin' freeway that goes only North and South and is usually at a dead stop during rush hour because of accidents (lots of illegals driving down here). So I have to drive 22 miles on normal roads so it takes usually 35-45 minutes. It's not that bad really.

What is your work commute like and how does it affect you?

used to be 1hr 15min.

30min drive to metro, 45min train to office. or 20min drive to free bus parking lot. free bus to metro = 20min. train = 45min => 1hr 25min but save $4/day in parking.

my advice:
dont live so far away from the metro. pay the premium and live in a place that's close. that way if you ever get a new job, you still have the option of metro, instead of moving again

15 to 20 minutes in the morning to go 9 miles, if I leave between 6:45am and 7:00am.
Houston Texas

If I leave after 7:00am, add 10 or 15 minutes to that.

Going home, if I can get out of there around 5:00pm, takes me about 30 minutes.

1.6 miles and takes 2 minutes. I used to live 37 miles from my last job. The drive took 45 minutes. I didn't too much care for it, but it wasn't unbearable. I always listened to a morning radio show.

I have a one hour drive each way, its miserable. I'm looking for a new job, the commute is taking a toll on the quality of my life.

Slightly off-topic - do you know anyone who works for themselves (or started their own company) who doesn't have long days?

I used to commute 50-60 minutes via car for a drive that without traffic would take 20 or so minutes. Most recently I was commuting 1 hour 45 minutes from my house, to the train station, via train, to Grand Central. Nearly four hours of commuting a day and I was not too happy. A few people that I know commute between 2-3 hours EACH WAY per day which is absolutely insane. Commuting is such a waste of life. I felt spoiled by previous jobs where the commute was 5-15 minutes.

26 miles. 30 minutes there, 30 minutes home. I actually enjoy the drive because it's "my" time.

If all goes well, I'll be retiring early next spring.

I believe those people are called super-commuters, they do it for the better paying jobs, but I cannot imagine how miserable that would be. I find it mildly amusing the OP is asking about a commute for a job that requires 50-75% travel. I think the better question is what it's like to be a road dog for work, not what your commute is going to be like 25% of the time.

20 to 35 minutes each way depending on time of departure (20 minutes at 5:30 vs 35 at 7:30) and traffic/road conditions.

Normally it takes me 15-20 minutes to get to work max. There's been construction lately though, that seems to almost randomize the time in a range of 15-40 minutes.

4 miles, roughly 6 minutes, including parking.
Every once in a while, I go home for lunch.

On a good day, 3.5 miles in 3 minutes = averages 70mph! must be traveling over 70 for a little while to make up for the time when he's speeding up and slowing down. And, there are traffic lights on the way?! Doesn't sound like an interstate.

But...

40 minutes, that's an average of 75mph, beating scarpozzi. But, 50 miles in 35 minutes is 85.7mph! The new ATOT commute to work champion, Anubis!

Congratulations Anubis and LS20

70-80 miles (depending on which site I'm at) and it takes anywhere from 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours. Driving into Northern VA traffic

Just thought I'd toss this in for reference:

For 5 years I commuted 1 hour and 40 minutes each way (southern California), which was about 26 miles.

Hell.

I promised myself I'd make any change necessary in lifestyle to never do that again.

Now I'm vastly more successful, free of that, and I'll never have to do that again. Thank God!

Previous job I had was 25 miles away, but I worked at odd times (3pm-10pm) so I never hit bad traffic. Took about half an hour to 40 min each way. I never really hated the commute.

How I commute 15-25 min depending on the traffic. 🙂
