I lived in Germany for 3 years and have been back there several times over the years. Germans, and Europeans in general have a much higher driver education program than in the US, and especially Canada where driving is a joke.

My aunt who lives there retook the test 3 times because she failed, and not only that, she had to paid thousands of marks just to get it.

A lot of German cars are highway mega monsters, even a diesel Jetta there travels at 200-220 km/h if it desires. When you move up a class and get into the Audi's, BMW's, Mercedes, all those cars are easily capable of 240 km/h + travel.

Sure it's dangerous, but that's how you drive up there. In fact I would not even consider that dangerous compared to how cars or motorcycle drive in Italy let's say, or even Poland, a country with a high population, limited space, and non developed road ways. I was in Poland and my cousin drove me from Lodz to the Baltic on a two lane road most of the way. I almost shit my pants and how he was driving, passing cars, flashing lights, 24/7.

It all comes down to education and intelligence at the end. Germans are a highly educated people compared to most countries, especially North Americans. Of course if that happened on our highways it would be dangerous, it's dangerous to just drive the speed limit and people cut you off or don't move out of the way because they are asleep at the wheel or don't even see you.

In the end it all boils down to checking your mirror. You check your mirror, you see a pair of headlights approaching you, maybe even flashing, you gtfo of the way, it's that simple. To get the same effect in North America you need to use the horn, flash your lights, possibly pass them from the right, or install a train horn kit like I'm planning to.

You couldn't get drivers to be that courteous here in North America. Bunch of self-righteous assholes who sit in the left lane policing everyone else.

Definitely. Kind of like people policing threads and telling others that certain legal behavior is irresponsible. ;)

Seriously though, there is onbious risk to traveling that fast. If you are up to the task, accept the risks, and understand that others' safety is important, more power to you. People buy fast cars to drive fast; I would much sooner see this rather than someone buying a Bugatti and letting it sit forever in a garage. :)

No, my problem is when you needlessly put other people at risk. You want to scatter your worthless carcass across the German countryside that's fine with me. Do it on a track, not on the open road with other drivers around you.

My .02

too many people are either cowards or just drive stupid.

I have been stopped by air at 127mph, done various runs at 145mph (limited), and been around 120 for hours.

I only do this on highways and not in merge lanes nor do I weave. I will do my best to only pass on the left and if I have to pass on the right I don't do it flying by.

In residential areas I am often passed at stop signs I actually stop for even.

Also you guys have to take into consideration German highways and roads vs roads here in North America. In Germany the highway is well made, with long sweeping curves, smooth as glass surface, no bumps, no potholes, etc. At night the thing illuminates like a x-mas tree. Even if North American's increased their speed limits here it would be impossible without changing the infastructure of our roads.

Back in the day we took out a friends Mitsubishi Eclipse to like 230 km/h on a local major highway here in Toronto at night time when there wasn't anyone on the road. Even in a straight line we could barely stay in the lane because at that speed the highway isn't actually "straight" anymore, not to mention being constantly bounced around by uneven road surfaces which launch you around at those speeds. I remember being suprised by our test run result because I recall traveling in my uncles Mercedes in Germany at around 220 km/h, with him driving 1 handed and eating a sausage with his other (no joke), and it was a stress free ride.

I'm sure the guy in the video doesn't drive like that everyday, maybe on sections like that he can, but nowadays the autobahn isn't what it used to be, there's a lot more traffic/congestion now and more speed restrictions in city areas.

Well done sir.

not all the roads in europe are perfect that allow a choose your own speed system and not all of the autobahn is limitless.

No one said they are, especially outside of Germany and no one said all of the autobahn is limitless. I even stated in my post that there are tons of limits among crazy traffic as Europe is even busier than ever.

not true at all. Both in the US and Germany there are good and bad roads.

Here in S. Florida we have nice smooth 6 lane roads that are well lit.

I agree with the guy who basically laid it out for all of you.

Driving in Germany is treated as a privilege, not a right like it is here.

American drivers plain in simple SUCK on average. I love the German driving system, especially the way they enforce it.

I'd like to see an American clog up the passing lane in Germany. We'll see if they continue to do so after they get ticketed.

This combined with the superior construction of the roads in Germany (especially the unrestricted section) compared to the mess we get here.

Another point, if you don't want to be on a road with drivers going faster you, DON'T drive on the roads which have no limit. YOU made the decision to drive on that roadway and are fully aware of the risks involved.

What are you even talking about? The roads where the speed is not limited are ALWAYS good or else it would be a death trap. Obviously there will be bad roads everywhere, but overall the roads in Germany and in Europe are higher quality and better made than in North America (if you are even going to try arguing that fact than obviously you haven't driven around Europe much ;) ). Canada is the worst when it comes to roads and I'm a lot happier whenever I'm in the US, Ill give you that much, but it's still no comparison to roads in Europe. Take a ride through Germany, Austria, Switzerland, you will see what I mean ;)

I can't believe you guys are even bothering discussing this still.

Skill, training, insurance, legalities, and the size of your brakes doesn't mean squat at 200mph. Period.

Why does it need to go past this? This is it, there's no arguement. No variable matters except that you are going recklessly fast. All this discussion is moot.

You stupid or something? The guy filming passed another car immediately after the douche in the Vette blew past him.

Are you stupid or something? :p
