The video is over a year old. It was on the Autobahn and the Vette was going close to 200 MPH.

Post from the guy who owns and was driving the Vette.

One mistake and he'd be dead possibly along with some other innocent motorists. I don't care if he was on the autobahn...that was stupid, irresponsible, and downright dangerous. :|

Change everyone's diapers and force feed them their vegetables while you're at it.

Don't be an idiot. Nothing I said was unfounded.

It's ONE road where there is no speed limit and it is legal. Perhaps then it is the person going 55 on the autobahn that is being stupid, irresponsible, and dangerous?

Wrong, it's a public road not some personal race track. Going that fast on a 2 lane road like that with slower traffic is irresponsible and dangerous. What happens if a medium sized animal wanders onto the roadway?

There are just too many unkown variables to safely travel at that speed on a public road like that.

They build protection fencing and crossover tunnels for the wildlife. You didn't think they would allow such speeds and ignore this, did you? The autobahn is build for speed. There was a documentry not too long ago on National Geographic about the autobahn. It's safer than you think for high performance vehicles.

Yet the debate over limiting speeds on the autobahn continues to be brought up in Germany and the EU every couple years. I wouldn't be surprised to see limits imposed in coming years there.

It's still stupid as hell to be going that fast around other people. Look in your rear view, it's clear, pull out, boom the car coming at you at 100 mph faster than you were was hard to see until it smashed you.

That vette was going crazy crazy fast, though, for re3alz

People in Germany can drive unlike people here. They wouldn't get in the left lane unless they were hauling ass themselves.

I don't care how good you think German drivers are. It is very difficult to judge how fast a vehicle coming up behind you is travelling and as the distance between you grows the ability to judge speed gets even harder. At 160mph you are travelling nearly 1/2 mile every 10 seconds. There simply isn't time to react if someone misjudges.

You would be at fault and not the fast driver if you went in to the left lane going slow. Stay out of the left lane.

Ah yes of course, "unknown variables"; fear of what would, could, might, should, possibly, potentially happen. But didn't.

So, you're saying that speed was never a factor in any death on the Autobahn? Because I'm pretty sure I could find many news stories where speed was a factor in many deaths on the Autobahn.

So don't drive on the Autobahn. You can't argue that by the time you get your licence and start driving in Germany that you aren't aware of what the Autobahn is and the fact that people travel at high rates of speed legally, and choose whether or not to use it. What's wrong with you driving on another highway with a speed limit that suites your emotional needs and minding your own business? I can't stand "lock everyone up in a bubble, it's worth it if it only saves just 1 life!" types.

For every incident on the Autobahn that you can dig up I can dig up 100 in the USA that happened where speed wasn't a factor, and 100 more where it was even at the posted limit of 55 mph.

Either way, highway speeds are almost always universally fatal, even with 55-75 mph speed limits. The only difference is it's more gruesome and memorable at 100+ mph.

I think we are all missing the point of the video. The guy realises he's almost out of gas. He looks down and gasps because the needle is on E. Isn't it obvious? Sheeesh!

Do you know that that was the first thing I also noticed when watching it? It didn't look like a very populated area either. I wonder if he made it to a gas (petrol) station?

Look, I just said that the speed he was travelling on that road was irresponsible, dangerous, and stupid and I stand by it. That is my opinion and I'm as entitled to it as you are yours.

I've seen plenty of accidents where insane speeds were a huge factor. As speed increases, the time you have to react to a situation drastically decreases. This is a fact. People in Germany aren't any more able to cope with this fact than Americans.

You and your car aren't. Jules is completely correct. Driving that fast is only acceptable on a closed track where the only person you can hurt is yourself, legalities be damned.

The fastest I've ever driven was about 150mph, and my car (08 M3) is dead solid stable at that speed. Even still, there's no way in hell I'd go that fast on a highway with other traffic anywhere near me.

All it takes is something random like the guy up there in the Touareg getting coffee spilled on him by his three year old little girl and a slight swerve into your lane .. and blam, lots of dead people.

I don't care how good you think German drivers are. Yes, but you could be going 120 mph, come up on a car going 80 mph and then move over to the left to pass. If there's some idiot flying down the road at 200 mph he'd be closing in on you at 80 mph. Say what you will but it's hard to judge how fast a car is coming up behind you when its quite a ways off. With an 80 mph difference he can cover that gap FAST. Not to mention the fact that he's on a road, not a race track. Things end up in the road, dirt, gravel, sticks, etc... and there's no way to stop in time if he saw it. At 200 mph it doesn't take much to lose control of the car.

People act like they are infallible, they aren't. Things go wrong.

Have to side with Jules on this one, this shit belongs on a race track. Legal or not you don't have the right to endanger other people's lives like that.

I would feel different if it was an empty road or at least lots of lanes to separate you from slower traffic. Even on a racetrack with corner workers watching out for everyone the disparate speeds between cars entering the track and cars on the straight are extremely dangerous. Forcing this on the general public who have equal rights to the roadway is borderline homicidal.

In case anyone doubts what disparate speeds can cause:

No, Jules maximus and Skoorb are right, I saw one video of just that happening on the autobahn and while the guy didn't wreck, you wouldn't believe how close he was to hitting the guy that had just pulled out in front of him. I've also seen videos of where people are cruising at like 100mph+ and then the traffic up ahead is at a dead stop and the driver of the car has to brake really hard. If the road was slightly worse, it could have ended badly.
