How do you think Intel will segment its Coffee Lake desktop line-up?

Core i7= 6C/12T?
Core i5= 4C/8T?
Core i3= 4C/4T or 3C/6T with high clocks?
Pentium= 4C/4T or 3C/6T with lower clocks than Core i3?
Celeron? (To possibly include a 20th Anniversary Celeron?)

My fast 2 cents... i5 can't be 4 core anymore if they want to be competitive with AMD.. unless they want to i9 and lower the prices

I could see desktop Pentium and Celeron being the dud DC Cannonlake models (albeit likely BGA only). 14nm Yield should be so good at this point that there shouldn't be much of anything that couldn't be sold as an i3.

i7 = 6C12T
i5 = 4C8T and 6C6T
i3 = 4C4T and 4C8T
Pentium = 2C4T
Celeron = 2C2T

i7 = 8C 16T
i5 = 6C 12T
i3 = 4C 8T
Pentium = 6+6 or 4+4 ??

Celeron = Who cares, phones are more powerful.

Not really. For the vast majority of users, four cores, or even two cores with hyperthreading is more than enough. And Ryzen with no igpu is still a niche product.
What will be interesting is what kind of core counts and prices the Zen apus have.

Pentium: same config as Core i3 (4 cores, no Hyper-threading) minus AVX[2], same as today's segmentation.

I think with 6/12 on the mainstream platform it should cannibalize the HEDT by a huge degree, but it won't. The reason is because I fully expect those 6/12 mainstream parts to cost almost exactly as much as the HEDT 6/12 parts. I also expect them to come with only 16 pci lanes and if you want more you will go HEDT. If this is the case I will still be sticking to HEDT, but if they can beef those mainstream 6 cores up a little, then I'll go mainstream to get 6 cores as well as the latest and greatest IPC. Having to choose between cores and IPC is incredibly frustrating. I can't wait to see how Intel manages to segment their products with 6/12 on the mainstream. I think most people who buy HEDT go for the 6 cores, so with 6/12 on the mainstream they will have to cut them down on PCI lanes or make them useless in some other way, thus forcing people to buy HEDT anyways.

Skylake-X is presumably going to have some amount of higher IPC than Coffee Lake, although we will have to see how each one clock.

In all seriousness, I'm hoping for an 8 core i7, 4 core w/hyperthreading i5 range, and a 2/4 core i3 (depending on sku). A generously clocked Celeron would be nice.

i7 = 6C/12T
i5 = 4C/8T
i3 = 4C/4T
Pentium = 2C/4T, higher clocked (Kaby Lake rebrand/clock boost)
Celeron = who knows.

You do realize, that you can buy a 6core 12thread CPU right now for $249 and put it on a $99 AM4 mobo..?

How is an i7 going to compete with that..?

It won't compete on price, but honestly the skylake chips and coffee lake chips will blast everything else out of the water, so they can charge more for the performance advantage. If you want performance you will simply buy Intel, and you will PAY for it I'm sure.

So many optimistic people here. I think the 6C12T variant will be priced like the 6800K, and the rest of the line-up will remain as is. I would be extremely surprised if they make i3s quad-core and ditch dual-core altogether.

Well if you look back through history when i7's were traditionally 6c12t.. the i5's were still 4c4t, and i3's 2c4t

So to be honest i'm expecting it to be too late for Intel to respond to Ryzen5 with Coffee lake, so i'm expecting Coffee Lake to be;

i7 -
6c 12t
4c 8t

i5 -
4c 4t

i3 -
2c 4t
2c 2t

Pentium -
2c 4t

Celeron -
2c 2t

I personally don't think we'll see i5 changes until Icelake.

The new Core i7-8000 lineup will consist of 6C/12T CPUs and yes, doesn't take a genius to figure out core/thread count increase will affect Core i3/i5 as well. Arachnotronic's prediction is spot on. There's not a single dual-core SKU leaked for CFL, so KBL might be the last generation we see native desktop dual-cores from them. And this is just the first step. From a previous leak, Cannon Lake-S would be a 8C/16T processor before it was canned, so I wouldn't rule out mainstream octo-cores with Ice Lake-S.

Core i7 having a 6C/12T flagship doesn't imply that Core i3/i5 would get more cores/threads as well.

I think you glanced over my overall point. What end-user needs more than Ryzen now..?

Now capture/picture that that "extreme 5ghz" person, think about how specific & minute such people are in the populace. I would say most of the people (98%) are fine with Ryzen. So, in the past charging more for performance use to be able to work, now that performance is so close, Intel is going to have to re-imagine their HEDT.

And knock...knock... AM4 6c12t is mainstream now @ $249.

And if you want "more performance", then isn't that what Zen2 is for..? (When is Coffee being released?) It simply comes down to the cost of diminishing returns and very few people will pay a premium for each Hz, above 4ghz.

Sorry to disappoint your 'single hexa-core model at 6800K price' expectation, but I bet that's not what's going to happen. Pentium G4560 already killed >$100 duallies (Core i3) in the eyes of many system builders, and Coffee Lake-S only has 4C and 6C variants.

So what if it is only 6+2 and 4+2? How does that imply that Core i7-8000 6C/12 would assume the same price tier as the present i7 7700K?

If 4+2 means dual cores are out, then I suppose that's the only good thing that can be inferred form the leaks at the moment.

The 5820K, which was a better CPU than the 6800K because it was much better at OCing, could be had for 380$. If you're optimistic then that's what you might expect as the best-case outcome at present.

Because that's how Intel does things. Probably will be a tad more expensive but not that much.

As for 2018 HEDT, it's a bit cloudy since it seems like Cannonlake Server got canned. I don't know if that means Cannonlake-X got canned too. Ice Lake-X/Server will be using EMIB I guess so all bets are off what they do there.

These are not HEDT products. i7-7700K's successor will be priced accordingly.

No, the best-case outcome and what will likely happen is a halo 6C/12T part replacing i7-7700K at the same MSRP ($339-350) or slightly higher (due to inflation).
