I searched on here to see if anyone had the full and correct story that a Prescott resident told me about 30 years ago. I had forgotten the exact details. But I remember her telling me that when the town was in the early stages of development in the late 1800's (Gold Rush Days), there was a Politician in Washington named Prescott and they hated him and didn't want to be associated with him, so they started pronouncing it with an "it" at the end, Pres-skit to differentiate from him. My friend was very knowledgeable of the history of the town.

Interesting. Thanks for posting this Cheryl. I've argued with natives over the pronunciation before but I never knew the backstory.

Worcester was a mindfuck when first heard locals pronounce it. Hah.

Well, duh....Wor-Chester...like Wor-Chester-Shyre sauce..

I "grew up" in Springfield when my dad was stationed at Westover AFB. Went to "Wooster" many times.

With certain words in the English language, letters sometimes switch their sounds. In this instance, the "e" and "o" switch, so the correct pronunciation is "pro-skeet".
