How did Apple succeed in Tablets (ie: iPad) when everyone else failed miserably?

Viewsonic G is the nearest thing and its severely crippled if left stock.

The Nook and Galaxy tab's are great for rooting and dinking with but have a very small screen.

An Android tablet that is a direct competitor to the iPad has not yet hit the market. Tons of reviews of vaporware...but nothing that you can actually go buy.

My ideal tablet would be an iPad with some kind of open source market, where people can freely submit code to an "app store" of sorts, so that those who want to can access this subset of applications. Like some kind of Jailbreak system... :hmm:

I just read an article that talked about how Apple spent a fraction on R&D compared to other manufacturers because they keep refining their existing platforms, compared to how other manufacturers started from nothing.

Using the OS from the iPhone/iPod Touch was genius, and saved them a ton of cash.
Apple is getting a lot for its R&D buck, humbling other large tech companies.
AAPL spent a total of $4.6 billion over the last four years. Were those dollars well spent? Revenue in 2006 was $25 billion. In 2009, sales climbed to $43 billion. Its market cap, has tripled over the since the start of 2006.In contrast, Microsoft (MSFT) used $31 billion on research over the same period. Revenue rose from $44 to $58 billion. Cisco (CSCO) spent $19 billion in R&D since 2006. Sales went from $28 to $36 billion. Intel's R&D (INTC) cost $23 billion over that time frame. Their revenues were flat over a four year period at $35 billion. Stock prices of those three companies have greatly underperformed AAPL.
Apple's R&D is extraordinarily cost efficient. Other tech companies seem to lack the same "vision" in allocating their R&D budget. One wonders what new products come out of Apple's R&D in 2011 and beyond?

For those that are unaware, here's a list of what's next for Apple:

-iPhone 5 likely delayed till Sept (this will mesh well for Christmas sales, and give them time to see if there's a way to do 4G/LTE on the iPhone without killing battery life)

-Apple has a giant server farm in North Carolina, no one is sure WTF they have in mind for it, best guesses are cloud storage for music videos, streaming videos, free Mobile Me accounts, or perhaps storage for Steve Jobs brain when he dies.

-Apps for Apple TV

-A cheaper iPhone geared for India, Brazil and China, where they don't use the carrier subsidy model to spread the price of the phone hardware over the length of the contract.

I laughed.

Don't mind moosey. He is an Apple fanboy who is also an Android fanboy who also doesn't like smart phones but owns a ton of them but they don't work where he needs them to. He's a bit torn at the moment and needs someone to hold him.

He sounds like someone more crazy than me! And I know from crazy ^_^

My flipping employer is forcing us to lock up our phones at work 🙁

We're all switching to iPod touches and leeching the hospital's WiFi, I think I'm getting a used current gen 32GB iPod Touch on Monday.

I really need to list some phones in FS/FT

The current generation of iPt devices are the best Apple has ever made. My friend got a killer deal on the 8GB model and LOVES it. From what I can tell, he hasn't even bothered to use the "iPod" function yet (hates iTunes).

Let me know where I can buy 1.3 pound laptops that are thinner than an iPhone 4 for $500.

Weight and size do not fit into my list of desirables. I don't give a shit if my laptop is 4lbs or 40lbs. I want it to function. If I'm going to pay more than $500 for a computer, it had better come with hundreds of gigs of storage, an optical drive, be able to sit properly on its own without purchasing MORE products just to get it to sit properly, blah blah blah. To me, the iPad isn't worth more than $200-$300

🙄 I somehow knew someone would give this response, even though it's obvious what I was talking about. I'm referring to the "problem" that prevents people like Nik and I from buying one (it costs more than a laptop and has fewer capabilities). I would buy the current-gen iPad in a heartbeat for $300. Absolutely NOT for $500.

I never said the price was a problem for Apple. Still, I suspect they'd make even more money if it was $300 because millions of folks like me would buy it.

I've felt the same way about Nintendo with the Wii and I do agree to an extent, however, you need to stop looking at it from your own personal perspective. I think that's a huge problem is how you're seeing it as just a simple computer that's very limited.

Others see a computer more portable and with better battery life than pretty much all laptops, a device great for viewing content on the go (which can double as a portable movie player if you have kids), something that can very feasibly replace a GPS, serve for taking notes in class, a digitzer that you can pick up and take with you wherever, and who knows how many other things I'm forgetting.

Yes, its not as powerful as a laptop or even a netbook, but its powerful enough for what people are using it for.

Its something thats more than the sum of its parts, and while it could undoubtedly be made cheaper, its still cheap enough that for many, a device like that is a bargain, or at least fair value.

For Apple it makes sense to price it like they have, its a new product that so far is better than similar products, and they also do have a premium brand association to protect. If anything, you guys should be pissed at the competition for not really outdoing Apple. Isn't that what the anti-Apple people preach, that its all overpriced garbage?

To me a Lexus LF-A is not worth more than.. $150K, maybe.

I don't think anyone really cares about what I think a Lexus LF-A is worth.

Apparently, I think you are one person's opinion that the rest of the world does not value whether or not the Apple iPad 2 is worth $500.

That's fine for you, but there are people who care about those things. After almost a year of wanting a tablet, I finally bought an iPad 2. I enjoy it. I can read on it, take notes, browse the internet, and run the few applications that I need it for. The real selling point was its 10 hour battery life. I take some long classes and can't always count on being near an outlet. Add to that the fact that it is silent and comes on and shuts down instantly, and it's a nice package.

The OS could be better, but I wasn't a fan of the Xoom's OS either.

Why should I give a shit what someone else thinks about it? There are many many MANY people who agree with me. Just because YOU don't doesn't mean shit. 🙂

I'm sorry, but I do not have to choose.

Because $500 is not that much money? 😕

It doesn't matter whether it's a little or a lot. It's the value I get per dollar. It's spending that much money on something that doesn't offer enough benefits over a laptop to prevent me from taking that same amount of money and buying a laptop instead.

I mean, shit, the only advantage for me an iPad has over a laptop is battery life and it's not that much better. I mean, I could buy a laptop AND an extra battery and still pay less than many iPad models which would completely negate any advantage I saw in the iPad.

Well, I suppose the end result is that no active participant in the market cares what your opinion or the people who agree with you as Apple stock continues to rise, the company is loaded with cash, people still line up hoping to buy an iPad 2, and the iPad 2 owners are enjoying their devices, and competitors are failing to gain any marketshare.

As a matter of fact, just because I don't actually does mean shit.

You still have the choice to go buy that laptop and spare battery instead of acting like a whiny wise and beautiful woman.

I like how you have to resort to personal attacks because you don't have anything to say and nothing to add to the conversation.

Crawl back under your rock. That's one more for the ignore list.

I could buy a 3G enabled iPad to replace my iPhone as well and just use Skype.

I do not think you understand the useage for an iPad, because you think a Laptop can replace it.

I can not hold a Laptop in one hand (well I can, with my Macbook Air, but it is not comfortable).

I can not read something like a book or Magazine on a Laptop.

Doctors can't use Laptops to interact with patients easily.

An iPad is clearly not for you if you are using it for ... Laptop purposes.
