Apple already lost 30% of their tablet marketshare this past quarter. It's only going to drop even more.

In the meantime, they sold 15 million tablets.

iPad 2 sales figures will be released this week, should be interesting.

The things are sold out in hours and people are still camping out to buy them.

I know they are, I tried to get one and never did but it's just inevitable that they can't hold the lead forever. There's just too much competition for them to keep the lead forever. It can't happen overnight and won't happen until even close to the end of the year and early next year but it's going to happen.

It'll still be a while before the other Android tablets gain mindshare with the public. I still can't find an iPad 2 in stock anywhere, but a quick search for a Motorola Xoom at Staples in my area leads to this:

For me money is not a concern when buying something, I buy the best of whatever I am looking for. I have an iPad.

It seems like Apple does a good job of setting the "standard" with computing technology and then letting other companies play catch up. They did it with the desktop environment, the MP3 player, the smart phone, and it looks like they're doing it with the tablet.

I guess that really doesn't bother me...

Sorry my mistake, it was 20% but still a HUGE drop.

http://blogs.forbes.com/ericsavitz/...et-market-share-drops-to-73-samsung-takes-17/

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/03/10/apples-4q-2010-tablet-market-share-pegged-at-73/

There's just too much competition for "one product" but only two tablets to keep the lead forever.

wait is this right? last time some of those companies were counting tablets shipped to stores rather than sold to customers..and got egg on their face.

The anti-Apple voices today are, to me, ten times more annoying than the Apple fanboys I used to resent. The idea that the iPad could possibly be "overpriced" when every other manufacturer has struggled to match its price point with tablets that are smaller and less full-featured is just comical to me. If you don't embrace the whole idea of a tablet, fine, but it's clear the market as a whole does, and the iPad has absolutely set the standard for tablets.

Does Apple's marketing acumen create an advantage? Definitely. But so do their state-of-the-art battery technology, their remarkable design and manufacturing standards, and their class-leading ergonomics and user interface. I don't have a problem with people critiquing Apple, but I do have a problem with anyone ignoring the reality of what they have brought to the table.

Well that is their opinion and that's your opinion. You say they're the best and the other people's opinion is that it isn't.

This. Android fanboys are irritating and do nothing to help uninformed people want an android device. I think many of them never even tried an apple product with an open mind. I like both and both have weaknesses. For my needs ATM, apple just has less weaknesses.

While I believe the iPad is a silly device, I have to agree that calling it 'overpriced' is a joke considering the prices of competing products. I think Apple must be taking the Kindle model here and losing money on iPads so that they can make it back in app sales, because there's no other reason for the competition to be unable to match their pricing with lower quality hardware.

Um,, no...

They don't sell the iPad at a loss, they make about 25% profit on each iPad.

Well they actually are the best.

Aluminum vs plastic

Glass vs plastic

Light vs heavy

Thin vs fat

Clean design vs crappy

Huge battery life vs crappy

I mean it's the just basics.

I shake my head at companies like HTC and Motorola coming out with their little plastic devices. Do they really think consumers want their plastic shit?

Which maybe why the competitors have had to price their products higher than Apple. Apple makes additional revenue from the App store. All of these Andriod tablets only make money from the hardware.

That's not factoring in costs like R&D which aren't directly related to producing each individual unit. There must be some reason competitors can't price their tablets as low as Apple.

Before the iPad, every company's tablet line failed. noone wanted to buy it.

then comes the iPad and it's killing the laptop market, especially netbooks. Acer's market share dropped 15%.

How did Apple succeed when everyone else failed?!

1. Easy to use
2. Easy to buy apps

The usability & ecosystem are 2 of the biggest keys I see in the success of the iPad. People are already familiar with the iPod and iPhone brands and how easy they are to use. There's a ton of apps only seconds away from being on your iPad. There's no funky GUI to figure out. It's pretty stable and fast, and gets good battery life.

I've played with most other tablets on the market. They feel like KIRF's. The last time I was at the Verizon store waiting for a phone repair, I watched people play with the Xoom, the Tab, and the iPad on display. People kept going back to the iPad, every time. The iPad is a toaster - it "just works" for people. Hit the only button on the front, slide to unlock, tap a button to launch a program - done.

I think Android is cool, but not really so great for a lot of consumers who just want a device to use and not a toy to tinker with, if that makes sense. Not that Android is a toy and the iPhone isn't, but just that the iPhone is more tinker-free in its stock form.
