Best suggestion I've heard - Link

I?m increasingly convinced that we need a new approach: We need to make China and offer it can?t refuse. Essentially it is this:

?If you won't stand in the way of a nuclear North Korea, we won't stand in the way of a nuclear Japan. Continue along the present course and soon, you will face an Asia where your adversaries are armed with nuclear weapons.?

noo.

that could get very very nasty in a short time.

And that would only add fuel to the fire. That would give China reason to ally with NK! Even the South Koreans would not prefer a strong Japanese military. It would give many asians a reason to unite against Japan. Most asians have not forgiven the Japanese for the atrocities they committed during WW2.

China is already allied with North Korea...

Yes, but China is publically demonishing NK's acts. China has a lot to lose if war breaks out, given its current rate of economic expansion.

Agreed. I think this is an instance where NK crossed the line as to what is acceptable by China's standards. I have a feeling that China likes NK tweaking the United States with its proclamations, missle tests, and the like...see their willingness to block everything in the UN related to NK and drag their feet with the multi-lateral negotiations. However, NK went too far this time which is why China is publically decrying the act.

QFT.

1. Why would China help the U.S. attack NK? It has no incentives. The same for Russia.

2. China does not want pro-American Korea on its border (its initial reason why it helped NK during Korean War by sending a horde of troops while Russia was more reluctant and helped out with their MiGs. China also does not want a war, war = economic consequences.

3. Attacking NK = leveled Seoul, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions dead due to artillery, chemical weapons, and missles in Korea and Japan.

4. LOL @ Japan pre-emptive striking NK like Israel. If that happens, SK and China will not tolerate Japanese aggression.

If there is a war with North Korea, the refugees will head north to China and the Chinese army will absorb North Korea and claim it as their own.

I would assume an air and sea bombardment being the most effective start to the actual land invasion. Bypassing the 38th parallel, I imagine a beach invasion of some sort.

I don't think the North Koreans have any actual retaliatory capabilities and South Koreans should remain safe.

i have no idea about NK, but from *what* i know NK would be even worse than Afghanistan, territory-wise.

You answered your own question. China is quickly becoming an economic superpower, and maintaining that growth is a huge incentive. NK's little tantrums could throw a big wrench into that plan, and when you've got 1.5 billion people to feed, it's not too hard to set your priorities straight.

China is in the best position to slap their little child. And it would be very bad for China to stand aside and just let things happen if the international community and NK started fighting. It would behoove China to be involved.

If NK does decide to be stupid and drop even as much as a small yield nuke or chemical weapon on Seoul or any other country besides itself......well it'll(meaning NK) be a smoking ruin in a span of a few days as the US, China and Russia would probably go apesh!t on NK.

I think this would be very likely.

Waste of time.

If we invaded North Korea, I don't think it should include any troops at all.

I would start at the bottom, just north of the south korea perimeter, and sweep west to east with as much bombardment as possible. I would continue to do this for several weeks until we had the entire populace cornered into the northern most territory. I would then leave north korea alone and keep a close eye on any movement out of the country.

Any form of instigation against the North will mean hundreds of thousands of deaths on Seoul and maybe Japan due to thousands upon thousands of artillery pieces tipped w/ biological and chemical weapons.

I really don't want that to happen since I have family in Seoul.

Ah good point. :( I really don't know my geography, history, or world events very well. Is our best strategy just to restrict any type of import or export from North Korea? Don't we already have restrictions on them?

Mr. Kim Jong Il, tear down this wall!

Modern warfare isn't military so much as it is economics. We need to pressure China and Russia, both slowly turning away from Communism, to drop their support of NK, which is no longer "just a buffer state".

Use some special ops force to penetrate NK and kill off the leadership. I know it's been attempted before but if China decides to join the effort then it could be done. The rest will just follow... I can't see the civilans wanting to remain as a communist nation.

The DPRK has enough artillery in the mountains near Seoul to turn it into a smoking crater.

Pretty much to reiterate what everyone has already said, any type of military action against NK will mean certain death for SK and their neighbors.
