This new speaker, it seems the Republicans settled on a "middle of the road" kind of guy conservatively speaking. So if he's the proverbial not too much of something and not too much of the other compromise package deal the nutjobs and moderates finally settled on, it really does expose to the world how that party of theirs has gone off the rails and into a black hole where nothing can come back out. What comes out the other side though, well, we really should be prepared for something much more worse keeping in mind the self-destructive path the party has been on.

New House Speaker Champions Fossil Fuels and Dismisses Climate Concerns

Representative Mike Johnson comes from Louisiana oil country and has said he does not believe burning fossil fuels is changing the climate.

^ from the New York Times. He gets more donations from oil & gas than any other source.

From what I've been reading/hearing this guy is a total dick on every issue.

Yup bring the crazy on. Gen Z sure does love burning oil and fuck da environment.
This needed to happen, we need a full on crazy to be at the helm simply so people finally realize going full crazy is a bad idea.

He's also a young earth creationist and thinks gun violence comes from a lack of prayer in schools or some shit like that.

He's about the worst sort of person to have in positions of power. Completely backward agenda.

My gut tells me he's just a figurehead and will not have much power of his own. He has no fundraising apparatus, no strong connections to other powerful people, etc.

This is of course all very bad because he's going to be beholden to the far right, but I think that's the real problem - not that he's some god nut.

Agreed probably some back room deal was fleshed out which is fine it’s the way our system is designed, where the new guy gets x, y and z done and done exactly how it was agreed upon. No way this dude literally came out of nowhere and had 100% of Republicans say “Yup this guy is perfect”.
I feel the moderate side got something and the looney side got something.

But you get so much pork or poison pills in these massive bills
This way the republicans can add on 12x as many unrelated poison pills ~ every single appropriate bill will have attached anti-LGTBQ and anti-abortion riders as a minimum, plus whatever anti-woke issue of the day pops up for extra anti-everything legislation.

Then why did Repubs vote McCarthy out?
But it was Democrats who voted him out! If they'd have just voted FOR him, he wouldn't have lost his seat! /s
Just ask Zor Prime without the /s lulz

He could find some measure of power pretty quickly by playing his cards extreme enough for TwoScoops and for the Freedumb Cockass imbeciles sharing the House with him.

And I'm not sure he'll need to be beholden to many/any...he IS the far right from the looks of it, or at least from one angle. A real Christofascist shithead, and wants to blame school shootings on science teachers. Yeeeeeah...

I sincerely hope he's just marked as the loon he is.

I don't think this will really encourage MAGA candidates. For one, this guy is probably going to be weaker than even McCarthy.
He's a throwaway speaker just to fill the seat, IMHO.
yup, throwaway.

It never ceases to amaze me how the political media has infantilized Republicans. The basic idea seems to be that since we know Republicans are insane morons it’s the job of the Democrats to protect the country from these idiots.

i Like Lincoln Project's latest tweet:
Johnson, speaker in name only :p

I dont see him being successful in controlling the wacko Repubs any more than McCarthy
