Yep. None of this is on the Democrats. McCarthy didn't even bother to offer anything for their help. His own party is the one calling for this historic vote. They and their voting base can bleat all they want and try to deflect but this is on them.

Yep, definitely not on the Dems. What woudl McCarthy offer and who would believe him anyway? He completely lied about the debt ceiling and spending targets not that long ago and plunged us right back into this chaos.

The GOP might not be capable of governing but at least they're wearing suits. And the Democrats once threatened to shut down the government 25 years ago so BoTh sIdEs

This has been proven false as some members of the GOP has been photographed voting in congress while in shorts and other casual wear.

What takes priority? Filling the speakership or a budget bill to fund the government? Like this could take 45 days.

yup gone.
216-210 with eight Republicans voting to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership.

The GOP members were:
  • Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona
  • Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado
  • Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee
  • Rep. Eli Crane of Arizona
  • Rep. Bob Good of Virginia
  • Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina
  • Rep. Matt Rosendale of Montana
  • Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida

hm.. 216-210 is close. if only 5 repubs voted to remove, then McCarthy would survive with 213-213.
not all Dems voted to remove?

Idly wondering how much bipartisan legislation including a far longer CR they can clown car into a discharge petition amendment.

Well Kevin McCarthy wanted to be Speaker sooooooooo bad so he can have his name in lights (ie: Legacy), even if it's for one term.

Well, now he has a different Legacy than what he imagined:
The only House Speaker to be removed

Congrats kevin

Speaker Jeffries? I'm sure he could motivate several of them with committee chairs.
That's the most likely path forward I see. But I'm not familiar with congressional republicans.

Second most likely seems like re-electing McCarthy.

Next question, I doubt Steve Scalise will be picked while he’s doing cancer treatments. So will he step down so the spineless one goes back majority leader?

Don't have anything against the guy. But, OK. Let it burn. 40-some days until the government shuts down.

And who’d be responsible for that?
As I said earlier I’ll take momentary intense pain over ongoing slow pain nearly any day.
Also Bring On the Treasury Coin and end this madness

Nice going Republicans. How many more embarrassing firsts can you foist on our country. How many Scaramucci’s did he last? Whats that... 269 days?, so around 27 Scaramucci’s

I wonder what the over/under is on how many rounds of votes it will take to elect a Speaker this time. Maybe McCarthy can go meet with Trump at mar a lago like he did after Jan. 6 and pick up some super genius level political advice.

Patrick McHenry is now Speaker Pro Tem, being the first name on the list McCarthy submitted per House rules. He immediately recessed the House subject to the call of the chair. McHenry did not join the majority of Republican members of Congress who sided with the Trump campaign’s attempts to overturn the election. He voted in favor of certifying the Arizona and Pennsylvania in the 2021 electoral college vote count, and he has voted in favor of Aid for the Ukraine consistently.

None of this should be a complete surprise. Republican House Speakership usually results in the Speaker being eaten alive by their own caucus or ethics/criminal violations.

Newt Gingrich: Ethics violations, resigned Speakership, resigned from House.
Dennis Hastert: resigned from House, arrested for bank fraud and felony false statements, pled to bank fraud and molesting minors.
John Boehner: resigned from Speakership, resigned from House.
Paul Ryan: declined to run for House in 2018.

Next up:
Kevin McCarthy: kicked right the fuck out of the Speakership by his own party.

This post aged well.

Also, the hilarious part is that McCarthy could be voted in again as Speaker and might make the above list twice, which would be an amazing accomplishment.
